As of 2024 we will no longer be publishing questions related to weather forecasts if they are answered via our hyper-local hourly & 10 day forecasts, weather maps and regular daily and monthly weather & climate videos.
Weβre a small NZ business with limited resources to respond to general weather questions. Our social media pages may be helpful to you, especially if you want to often talk (or groan!) about your local weather.Β You can find more resources from us here if thatβs your thing.

Hey guys. Just wondering if you might have, or be thinking of making an api? I have a tesla powerwall controlled by linux based home assistant. Everynight it checks openweather map for tomorrows forecast to decide whether to charge in advance using overnight power rates. However, the openweathermap (cloud cover) forcast seems a bit inaccurate.

Hi Patrick, we are working with our data provider to do this β itβs a complicated path to do so but are making progress. Will add your message as part of our case to do this. Cheers π

Sorry Jet, wasnβt monitoring that particular one but there was a cold front/southerly change that came though on Thursday that wouldβve sparked a few downpours. Classic cold/warm mix π

Hello
Iβve checked the chance of rain today for Bemont, Auckland, Bayswater and Takapuna. They all say 0% chance for the day, but when I look at the hourly chance, none of them are 0.
And for the coming days forcast, I noticed the chance are written down in tens (ie 10%, 50%, etc). Is it rounded off to the nearest 10?

Hi Vict, yes basically it rounds it up or down to make it cleaner to view. Also, the percentage of rain that we display is generally the hours of daylight .. so if itβs below 5% it goes to 0%. Weβre actually in talks with the data provider right now and one thing we want to do is sharpen up the way we display chance of rainβ¦ as sometimes those 7% risks can produce a really heavy downpour. Weβre also working with MetService to tie in radar alerting into our alerting app. When the chance of rain is below 10% you can have a shower β but it tends to be very isolated to one part of the city. The fact NZ has no open weather data means that, in NZ, this global data isnβt as sharp as it is in, say, Australia β where open data (thatβs data the public fund) can be freely used for the greater good.
Hope that makes sense β thatβs why if rain matters to you then the new Rain Trends in our App (or at RuralWeather) are so key. That chance of rain can be the best guide and telling you when a shower is possible, even if itβs only a 3% risk!

Hi Guys. Just wondering why the North-Easterly wind and rain was so cold today?
Itβs supposedly a sub tropical airflow, but doesnβt feel like it?
Iβm at Owhango on the Central Plateau.
Thanks
