Any idea when this cold wet weather will subside I know it's probably too early to tell but hoping for a good summer!

Eastern NZ gets breaks at times from the cold weather in the coming week or so, western New Zealand has a reprieve on Saturday otherwise looking fairly dreary.

metservice says tommorows showers could be thundery. and you guys dont think its thundery. im con fused here. metservice has forecasted thunder today. but i havnt heard any yet. i believe your forecast rather than metservice. the rain has been heavy at times today though.

Hi there,

Yes there is the chance of an isolated thunderstorm but the risk is at the lowest end of the scale. So basically showers with a risk of a brief isolated rumble of thunder. Here's the risk map for tomorrow afternoon and it looks fairly similar across the day.

Fishermans weather status plus canal levels and flows?

Hi I’m planning a trip to the South Island to fish the Twizel/Tekapo Canals. Thanks for the great weather outlook. I hear the Tekapo Canal is very low and not flowing. Can you please provide some information about the status for keen fishermen? :). Visiting fishermen are good for the Twizel economy :). The Tekapo Canal is currently not flowing and is very low, I hear. Thanking you in anticipation, Regards Damien Damien Toman Auckland

Hi Damien, Thanks for the

Hi Damien, Thanks for the message. We don't currently have any data on Canal levels and flows, you'd need to check with the hydro dams and local councils etc. As for the weather forecast we do have information on that specifically for both Twizel, Tekapo and anywhere in between :) You may find our new website www.RuralWeather.co.nz is better for you in that part of NZ to get the detailed data you need.

Hmm, I have no idea for the 30th November unfortunately. Much to far away.

Come and ask about a week out if you can?? Might be able to help then.

Wind strength in South Auckland

Hi there....about 3 weeks back in the high winds our trampoline went for a bit of a fly....We're in Karaka and there's a bit of a wind tunnel with the way the houses are lined up. We've taken it apart for now. With strap downs would you say it's safe to put if back up and also out outdoor furniture. (We put that in the garage as it most definitely would have been knocked around). Is the wind staying relatively calm for a while? I've had a look at the maps and cant see anything major coming in terms of wind.

Wednesday 25th might see some

Wednesday 25th might see some gusty winds from the southwest, apart from that you are right it isn't looking all that bad for the next wee while, say the next couple of weeks :)

Hi there Read

Hi there

Read this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-pressure_area

A quote here, "The highest barometric pressure ever recorded on Earth was 1,085.7 hectopascals (32.06 inHg) measured in Tonsontsengel, Mongolia on 19 December 2001"

So the highest pressure ever recorded on planet earth was 1085 hpa or mb if you prefer. This high moving over NZ currently tops out at around 1036 hpa. So that's a 49 hpa difference. Hence why I said the current high we have moving over NZ is certainly not the strongest the world has ever had :)

Hope that helps!

good morning coming from Australia for a cycle ride based out of Twizel from above dates ... interested in forecast if available.rain/ winds? GM

Hi there Starting to get a

Hi there

Starting to get a bit far out, long range models suggest westerlies and embedded fronts passing through at times. I can't do any specifics this far out. A mix of wet and dry is likely perhaps.

Keep an eye on this page here: https://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/location/Twizel%2C%2520Canterbury

Focus on the rain percentage figures to figure out whether may be dry or not. Hope you have a great trip and feel free to come back and ask about 5 days to a week out, might have a better idea then if you like.

Cheers

Date

If the browser has been open on the front page of forecasts (eg https://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/location/auckland) for a few days it still says "Today". But that's not the case at all. Nowhere does it say what date all the information refers to. How dumb is that!! I know you do a free service so this isn't a complaint, just a comment....

There's a current date and

There's a current date and time in the top right corner. That clearly tells you what "Today" refers to.

Hi there, most people just click refresh as it's instantly refreshed and based on all the traffic we have very few people stay on any of our pages for more than 1 minute let alone days! The only page people stay on for several minutes is the Lightning page and that does auto-refresh every 60 seconds. Will take your idea into consideration if money allows us to change things, we're shifting to the Amazon platform soon and that will allow us to modernise the site.

SSW Event

How has the SSW event developed, and is it possible to predict any general trends for October yet. My hunch says start the tomatoes later this year. Regards Steve B Wellington

Hi there, the SSW is a

Hi there, the SSW is a climate event that can't be directly connected to weather forecasts in NZ at this stage as it covers a very large area. So far NZ's weather has been classically spring-like for the past few weeks. October can often be he most chaotic month of the year. If anything, so far most regions are trending warmer than normal despite some recent cold snaps (at the start of this week for example). Just like with El Nino and La Nina too - they don't always impact our local weather here in NZ

Sunday racing at Hampton Downs

Hi WW, we have a race meet at Hampton Downs this Sunday and the forecast is looking rather bleak - is it too early to tell just how heavy the rain will be on the day? We've had four race meets there this year and it's rained every single time! I keep being told there's a little microclimate out there but I'm not entirely convinced. Many thanks.

Weather for Friday and Saturday

Hi. good day. I keep checking the weather since last week coz we'll be having an outdoor party on saturday particularly at Halswell ChCh. Is it ok if i ask for update maybe just until tomorrow if in case there is changes to the weather report. I know chch weather keeps changing or changes overnight but yeah, just wanted to have someone really tell me if it is a yay or nay. So we can make our final arrangements please. thank you heaps!! Fingers crossed i will receive a good news like it would be all clear that day. Lols. Thanks.

Hi there, not a problem at

Hi there, not a problem at all and yes the forecast for many parts of NZ this weekend is a bit frustrating as we can't 100% lock in some of the rain/showers. Two things, firstly keep an eye on the HOURLY chance of rain for your part of Chch on Friday/Saturday - it's very helpful and usually quite accurate at working out beginning and end times for rain (and peak wet hours etc). Secondly, I've had a look at the maps and Friday there's a chance of afternoon showers or patchy light rain. On Saturday it's still 50/50 with the bulk of the rain north of Chch but it may slide southwards during the day bringing rain back in again towards afternoon and evening. Sorry but we can't be more accurate than that as it's a bit of a weird, slow moving, set up which means we sometimes can't really lock things in until the day itself. But generally, sorry some risks of wet weather both days.

Cheers and all the best either way!!

Hi there, sadly while all

Hi there, sadly while all NZers must tax fund NIWA, NIWA does not openly share observations with us to freely share back with you. You'll need to therefore contact Government Agency NIWA and ask them to help. NZ is the only country in the western world to block private forecasters from sharing tax funded data to help answer simple questions like this.

11:09am update: Hi again, it appears we don't actually have a forecast for Turoa Ski Field at this stage (we are working on mountain/ski forecasts in 2020). You may want to select another nearby very location, such as Horopito, Rangataua, or Ohakune.

Wow

I have full admiration for people living in Auckland at the moment. Just seen the details for day of rain the second half of winter! Wow, I don't know how you manage to live in such a wet place - as well as deal with the traffic. Must be horrible. Couldn't do it (again) myself.

the endless squelch

Hi, looking ahead for late spring weather patterns - are there any indications that it will stop raining almost every day before the end of October? I have given up trying to dry anything outside. The ground outside is so sodden that this morning there was water standing in the cat footprints on the lawn. Everything is saturated. The 10 day forecast is like reading Christopher Hitchins famous article about being waterboarded. I know we have an event likely to bring some cold weather surprises happening at the moment but it is the rain that is depressing. Even pulling out a weed brings up lumps of claggy earth. Ugh. I am in Auckland of course.

Hi there, Auckland is in a

Hi there, Auckland is in a rainfall deficit so it's trying to make up for lost time now it seems! Once we get through today the next few days ahead look mostly dry and next week may kick off warm and dry as well (just ignore this weekend!)

Belated thanks. We had a few beautiful days and it was such a relief. It is the daily showers that make life difficult and everything in the garden is sodden. My father in law worked for the Met Service until he retired in the late '80s and always used to say, if anyone asked him about the weather, to look out the window.
