New 2020 rules for asking questions:

For over a decade WeatherWatch.co.nz has loved to receive your comments and questions here, however we need to tighten up on our rules of reply so that we can spend more time focusing on forecasting.

Before you ask a question please ensure you have read our latest news stories, weather video and specially made infographics on our homepage, as we will no longer be answering questions that are already generally answered there, or answered already in our hourly or 10 day forecasts at both WeatherWatch.co.nz or RuralWeather.co.nz

Morning Ted, thanks very much

Morning Ted, thanks very much for the feedback and support. Your question is an interesting one, but to be honest it's outside our expertise. We suggest you contact Government Agency NIWA as they have scientists who specialise in co2.  Sorry we can't help further on this one.

Kind regards

Auckland Sunday

Hi Guys Firstly just like to say what a fantastic job you do and I always come here for the weather as you are by far and away the most accurate. I am playing golf early Sunday morning and just wanted to know if I will need to take my wet weather gear? Best Regards Mark

Yes I would take your wet

Yes I would take your wet weather gear.

Thanks! :)

Is Hawera having 25.5

Is Hawera having 25.5 millimetres of rain on Sunday

Perhaps getting close to that

Perhaps getting close to that figure but may be just shy at around 20mm. But we'll see, an isolated downpour could mean some spots get over 25mm. For the most part, around 20mm though.

WW

tornado (auckland possible storms on sunday)

in regards to the thunder on sunday. I hope there isnt any severe storms like bad hail or any tornadoes like that. just smaller hail will be ok. heavy rain would be good. aand i would like to hear thunder.

Saturday Auckland 7/12

Hi Team, Quite confused about the forecast for Saturday. We have cricket from 11:00am till later in the evening over the shore in Auckland, you reckon we would be able to sneak in a game or is it going to be really wet? Rain maps suggests it might be dry. Thanks in advance Jeff

Hi Jeff - Simply look at the

Hi Jeff - Simply look at the hourly forecasts for Saturday as it will be the best guide for you on top of our detailed forecast. It really only shows a moderate risk of an isolated afternoon shower/downpour somewhere in the Auckland region - perhaps more likely inland north of the city or south of the city. At this stage Saturday leans mostly dry.

Cheers

Phil

Weather saturday

I'm hoping for good weather tomorrow in auckland with a party in the backyard and wanting to know if it will hold and weather I need cover. Thank you!

Hi there, keep an eye on the

Hi there, keep an eye on the hourly % of rain as you'll see where the risks are. Any showers that form you can then track on the rain radar.  All the best for tomorrow - hopefully it's a cracker of a day!

Rain forecast

Could the graphs (data) show what level of rain (mm for the period, eg 2 hours) is predicted please? It would be much more informative (realistic?) to know whether the 30% chance of rain may deliver 10mm of rain in the same period, rather than approximately 1 chance in 3 of getting wet! In anticipation, thank you.

Hi there - we are improving

Hi there - we are improving the layout and adding better rainfall data we hope by the end of January. So watch this space :) In the meantime, you can also use our website www.RuralWeather.co.nz to really drill down on rainfall totals. It may take 10 seconds to load the page up first time you visit due to so much data (we are lifting that speed early next year too).

Cheers :)

Life Education Charity day Sunday 15th - Ellerslie Racecourse

Yep, Year 15 of our event at Ellerslie Racecourse is coming up on Sunday 15 December from noon. You have done a great job in forecasting for us...how do we look this time? Cheers

At this stage it may be

At this stage it may be looking fairly anticyclonic meaning settled. All the details re sun, morning cloud, chance of a shower, temperature etc will come out in the wash as we get closer to the time but for now..... mainly settled, light winds.

Hopefully it ends up being a good day. The above can change being 10 days out so not locked in yet.

Cheers

Sunday 15th from 1pm

Thanks Aaron Rain Radar looks OK for Sunday 15th, although forecast says Rain How do we look? Cheers

I'm seeing conflicting

I'm seeing conflicting information at the moment, maybe give it another day or two? Either way doesn't look like terribly wet weather if there were any showers about, am leaning towards it being a mainly dry day.

Cheers, Aaron

Sunday 8th Dec

Hi, Do you see any changes possibly happening to the thunderstorms on Sunday 8th Dec in Auckland? Thank you

Yes in that any thunderstorm

Yes in that any thunderstorm activity if it does happen may not be till later in the day with a front, may just be the odd shower before then. Keep an eye on your Auckland forecast :)

Warm weather in Auckland.

I'm curious, whats the chance of North Shore suburbs reaching 27 or 28 for the rest of the week, i'm also currently waiting for the christmas weather forecast for Auckland. I am assuming since we are looking at a warmer than average summer again this time, it will be quite a warm and dry christmas or at least thats what i'm hoping for. It was a very hot summer last year and beginning of this year, and i'm hoping for the same thing this time. Hopfully we get swimming weather for christmas because last years christmas weather for Auckland was very upsetting and practically ruined our outdoor plans for the day. Also its been a very warm week so far, today I recored 27.9 in my backyard (Out of the sun) at 3:02PM.

Hi there If you've hit those

Hi there

If you've hit those highs it may be possible. Not to discredit your temperature readings but at Metservices North Shore spot it hasn't read any higher then 24.9 degrees over the last 30 days which was on the 5th November, yesterday it got to 23.7.

Go here: https://www.metservice.com/towns-cities/regions/auckland/locations/north-shore

Along the top task bar select "Past Weather" then "Last 30 days". It's not to say your readings are wrong but there are certain requirements in how a thermometer must be set up to get accurate readings, even if it is seemingly in the shade. But you could have a certain microclimate where you are precisely that leads to those highs.

As for the Christmas forecast Phil answered a similar question just yesterday and said this:

"We're aiming to have our first forecast out on Monday :) It will be very generic and about the general theme of highs and lows around the week of Christmas time - but it's at least one step in trying to lock it in!"

Keep up the good work!

Cheers

Yep, we're in a bit of a weird weather sandwich - clouds to the north and south - hopefully we're in a sunny bubble for longer :) (Although we do need more rain!)

yes I agree we need more rain. hopefully the thunderstorms on sunday can wet the ground.

Weather for Christmas Day

Hi, I was just wondering if you knew what the weather was going to be like for Christmas Day ?. Thanks Graeme

Temperatures

I was just wondering about the temperatures showing on your article about the warm temperatures. They do not match up with your city forecasts. The next 4 days in Christchurch are forecast to be 26, 24, 26 and 26 yet your map shows max temperatures 2 to 3 degrees below that for each day. Why the difference?

Hi there - fair question -

Hi there - fair question - those maps are more about the trends warmer or cooler overall. We take more time in our detailed main centre forecasts to forecast true maximums (as city roads and buildings make it hotter). The temps they show are for the airport - which is mostly grass with no buildings around, hence the difference,

Cheers :)

Hi there! Not far off now!

Blue Line - Colder air

Hi, just wondering what the numbers stand for in the cooler air as signified by the blue line on your maps? Is it related to temperature or change in temperature. Thanks, David.

Hi David They are thickness

Hi David

They are thickness lines, and mean literally what it says. They stand for the thickness of the atmosphere, cold atmosphere's aren't as thick while hot atmospheres are.

Here's some info on thickness: http://www.theweatherprediction.com/habyhints/148/

Thank you!

Im confused

I know you guys have been getting lots of annoying comments about this saturday. but on the 10 day forecast it says mostly sunny. while on rural weather theres a icon for saturday which is sun and a thunderstorm. im so comfused. this is the auckland forecast im talking about. and finally keep up the good work and keep doing what you do Phill. this site and rural weather are better than those niwa and metservice sites.

Hi there Am seeing a sun and

Hi there

Am seeing a sun and thunderstorm icon on rural weather but it's for Sunday, not Saturday. Maybe you got the days muddled up?

But anyway, thanks for the kind words!

Cheers
Aaron

its back

i see saturday and sunday has a thunderstorm icon now. im not confused about sunday but im confused about saturday. thanks again.

Hmm, and now it's back to

Hmm, and now it's back to just Sunday with a thunderstorm icon.

I think you'll find the further you go out forecasts for certain days are often going to change and flip around, especially when computer generated. Out till Saturday it's best to pay attention to the forecasts we personally see over on weatherwatch.co.nz, you can tell we have adjusted them due to the little "WW" symbol at the end. Anything beyond that is computer generated. Sometimes forecasts are best 4 to 5 days out at the most, beyond that conditions can frequently change.

Cheers
Aaron

thanks

thanks. i will keep a look out on sunday for any thunderstorms. you guys have done so well this year.

thanks

it must of changed. cause when i looked at it before writing the coment it had the storm icon on saturday and sunday. i just had a look at again and just sunday that has it. thanks anyway

Hi there - the weather never

Hi there - the weather never stops! We update hourly to ensure we have the best data - rather than holding on to a forecast we once thought was right, as our competitors may do. So check back a few times a day to really be on top of it all. :)

Sunday 8th Dec

Hi, Apologies I forgot to mention we live in west Auckland. Can you please advise the likelihood of it raining on Sunday 8th Dec? Thank you

Hi there Looks like a dry

Hi there

Looks like a dry morning then some rain or showers moving in during the afternoon. This could change between now and then as it is 5 days away, but thats a simple look at how things are looking for Auckland this coming Sunday.

Next 24 hrs weather chart

Ahh...this is where all the disgruntled ex-Metservice users are hanging out! Well, add another two! We wrote letters of complaint too and left their list. Re your 24 hour chart, some vertical hour line dividers and some colour bars for rainfall would make it more user friendly esp for dyslexic users. But it's better than Metservice anyway. We'll use your site now we have found it, thanks. S.H.

Hi there S.H, thank you for

Hi there S.H, thank you for your message and we're really glad to have you along. We are modernising some things in January so we hope the changes we make, will make things a little easier to use. Our goal right across next year is to gradually make everything more user friendly. We also run www.RuralWeather.co.nz which has more weather data on it than MetService and Niwa combined and it's entirely free (not paid for with taxes like they are). It takes 10 seconds to load due to so much data on it (and we are addressing the slow launch speed early next year too) but it gives you high level data if you need to drill down beyond the daily WeatherWatch products. It also covers all airports, suburbs and towns too.

Cheers :)

Sorry I forgot I mentioned I live in Tauranga. is it sunny on Saturday 7th?? thanks

We have detailed forecasts

We have detailed forecasts for Tauranga, please refer to that forecast for everything you need.

um metservice

metservice has a moderate risk for thunderstorms for auckland tommorow but your forecast says patchy rain. and metservice also says in their video that wednesday will mainly be dry. while your forecast says thunderstorms im confused here.

If we always matched

If we always matched MetService there would be no need for our service.

Kind regards finding the one that is most accurate for you.
