March weather

Hi Guys read an article today where yourselves and Metservice commented on some wet weather approaching in the next 2-3 weeks. I know this is well off and impossible to tell now but I am getting married in Auckland(Clevedon) end March and was wondering what sort of weather you can expect around this time. Apologies for the extreme forecasting required here.

Hi there, no we actually drew

Hi there, no we actually drew a line between us and MetService this week, saying while we agree rainmakers are more likely they may NOT actually bring relief to the regions that need it most. Sorry to be a "Debbie Downer". We're closely watching the tropics and hope to find some relief for you - watch our latest weather video with Phil Duncan as he has a special 14 day rainfall update.

All the best and ahead if you need help please don't hesitate to reach out and ask us here, we're here to help!

Chch

Hi..a) think your chch temp gauge is playing up again..saying 12° at the moment (b) any dirty stuff coming in southerly change ie hail/thunder/wind etc..? (c) will any of that upcoming tropic movement impact down here..? Sorry for all the questions..but cheers keep up the good work..

No worries for all the

No worries for all the questions :) . A) That temperature gauge is being removed today, as it's been a problem off and on for a while now. Dozens more we can choose from in the city so thanks for pointing out. B) Shouldn't be any hail and thunder, the cold change is slow and doesn't bring big downpours at this stage. C) At this stage the tropics won't be impacting the eastern South Island to any significant degree other than wind flows being warm/humid at times - but the rainmakers and storms will be well away from the South Island over the next week or two.

All the best :)

Waitangi Day Auckland

Hi Guys, Someof the forecast show showers for Auckland tomorrow afternoon from 12:00pm. What are the chances of that happening? Are we in for a tricky day or a dry day? Thanks a lot in advance

It looks mainly dry for most

It looks mainly dry for most of the day in Auckand, it's in the evening when a small easterly surge comes in that there may be a few showers, even then those showers could stay in northern parts of Auckland depending on the strength of this small surge.

Long-term forecast weekend of 16th/17th Feb

Hi WW team, Firstly, what a great job you all do, thanks for the service. I just had a look at the maps section to see if any rain was due for Auckland over the next 2 weeks and it appears minimal? I noticed the last map (Friday 15th Feb) has what looks like a storm or a decent amount of rain on the way from the tropics although looking to the Trans-Tasman, it looks like a high is coming, could that push out that rain band? I may have totally mid-read the maps so apologies for my amateur assessment :-) Look forward to your expert analysis of what rain, if any, is due over the next 14 - 21 days. Thanks, Paul

Thankyou very much Paul!

Thankyou very much Paul! :)

Yes there does appear to be minimal rain for Auckland for the next we while. You are right at this stage a large high is looking to keep any tropical activity away to the north around the 15th. If you go here: http://www.weathermap.co.nz/forecast-maps

Then look at the rain maps they go out a little further then our ones do, they are the same maps from the same company.

Auckland Saturday February 16th

Hey guys It's a long way out but whats Saturday February 16th looking like for Auckland?

Hi there Yeah that is quite a

Hi there

Yeah that is quite a while away, an anticyclone is moving in then. Looks fairly dry, winds from the southerly quarter so that could be good.

At this stage it's looking more positive for dry / sunnier weather then it is wet weather.

But of course, closer to the time a better understanding of what will happen will develop.

Cheers
Aaron

Are any tropical lows

Are any tropical lows forecast to pass over New Zealand in the next few weeks?

The 10th / 11th February

The 10th / 11th February could be a time to keep an eye on, a tropical low is forecast to come down but it's to the east of New Zealand. So nothing impacing New Zealand at this stage but if there were a chance it might be around then.

Cheers

Sailing Weather

I'm cruising out of Auckland on the 11th, heading down the east coast. How bad's the weather going to be for sailing. I assume with all those lows lining up North, its going to be a bumpy ride?

Depending how close or far a

Depending how close or far a tropical low that is moving down offshore east of New Zealand around then will determine if the weather is going to be bad or good. It could be fairly good weather actually if the low passes too far to the east. But one thing may be a fairly good swell could be pumping through even if the weather is good.

Keep an eye on our maps page to see what the weather / swells may be coming up.

Chch today

Hi..is there likely any dirty stuff..ie hail thunder etc coming through with southerly today..? Cheers.

G'day thereNo not today,

G'day there

No not today, upper level dynamics (cold air) is lagging too far to the south so the surface southerly does't have very good upper level support to create thunderstorms.

Some rain is likely for a time :)

Don't think it'll even rain...southerly all broken apart

Sat 9th Feb

Hi We have a party planned for my Dad's 70th, in Snells Beach, just out of Warkworth. Its due to start at 3.00 pm what is the weather looking like for that for that afternoon? or should we sort out some tarps Thanks Kelly

Hi there Looks like a mix of

Hi there

Looks like a mix of sun and cloud, but also an isolated shower or two possible at times. No heavy downpours at this stage, just a few showers now and then. Mind you this is over a week away so things could change between now and then, we'll see.

Hope the party goes well! :)

Coastal Weather inaccuracy

Hi again....just done a trip to Bay of Islands in a yacht ,over a fortnight.Noticed that forecasting over VHF was somewhat inaccurate. Monday Jan 28 forecast Brett, poor knights Bream head was SW 10 backing SE 10. By mid-afternoon we were getting 20 -25 from SW as we got out towards Little Barrier. Nowcasting stations constantly seem to over report. Channel Is. Jan 29 around midday reporting around 15 when it was calm. Per my last query whats up,...is this deliberate. My forecasting is take your pick by going out and having a look. Being an old rooster I remember the days of the lighthouse keepers and their very accurate reports !

Hi there, very interesting

Hi there, very interesting you should write and share that with us. Since the Government announced recently they are ignoring the MBIE review and will not free up tax funded data the private sector has rallied around us and we have someone very keen to help us build a new marine app for New Zealanders. We have no idea why the Government run VHF forecasts are so shocking but we've heard from many boaties over the years they find it quite a poor service. So watch this space, we hope to have something up and running within a year.

Kind regards and bring back the lighthouse keepers and local weather watchers!
Cheers

Coastal Forecast Inaccuracy

Thanks for that info. I wonder how a taxpayer funded service cannot be public ? An enquiry to the Ombudsman may be interesting given that the weather is surely in the National interest. Meanwhile it will be great if your project eventuates. May even include Lighthouse keeper type observers !

Friday 8th Whangarei

I generally use your forecasts as I think when it comes to rain you are less likely to predict it...case in point is next Friday (yes I know it's way out) but metservice predict RAIN and you guys "partly cloudy" ....I'll go with you

Hi there Could be different

Hi there

Could be different modeling. If you check out our rain maps here:

https://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/forecast-maps/rain

Then go to the 8th, you'll see that at this stage an anticyclone is keeping conditions dry for Whangarei. The low in the tropics to the north could be something to keep an eye on though as Phil has mentioned recently.

localized temp readings

Just found your site and great that you have localized temp readings.Gives much more accurate data. Im in Waikanae garden area although you do seem to have some temp equipment in area, if you ever need another reading/site from here id be very happy to assist. Great site and im not going back to met service

lightning trackers

how come your 2 lightning trackers have lightning dots shown at different places. the first one shows a whole bunch to the west of south island and the other one shows lightning spreadout around the country. why?

I would go by the one that

I would go by the one that shows the strikes out to the west, that has the best data of the two. These trackers are run by hobbiests mostly and are not dead accurate, they are just to give an idea that there may be some lightning activity out there.

This site here shows fairly accurate lightning information when storms are strong however: http://www.weatherzone.com.au/satellite/world/new-zealand

That's great!! Enjoy it, tomorrow looks good too but Friday and next week aren't too flash heat wise (should improve after that though). Cheers for the friendly comment!

Confusing and conflicting predictions

In the midst of the hotter spell, it seems that every weather site predicts slightly different highs and lows. I guess some of this is due to some sites being offshore and therefore their data may be less accurate? I know we're hot here, based on my very scientific approach in gauging my own energy levels ( ha ha). Which site, in your opinion gives the most accurate and up to date information? An example of this confusion is that today's predictions for Kawerau are saying cloudy. Hmm, not really happening. Thank you for any comment you may have on this. I follow this site the most as your answers to people's queries are easily understood.

Hi there, we all use similar

Hi there, we all use similar data but we all crunch it in different ways and some are more accurate and others are less so. However all forecasters say they are the most accurate just like all restaurants say they have the best food, so it's really down to the public to work out which one disappoints them the least. :) I don't know which website/forecaster you're looking at but we're forecasting Mostly Sunny for Kawerau today: hwww.weatherwatch.co.nz/location/Kawerau. As of 4:28pm It's currently 30 degrees, 1 degree above our forecast high of 29. So perhaps just try using us :)

Cheers and all the best,
Phil D

Thanks for the comments Phil.

Thanks for the comments Phil. If you guys locate any rain clouds out there, send them our way overnight. Much appreciated.

what is the heat for the rest of the heat wave

is going to be hot for Auckland for the rest of the heatwave?

Feel free to check out our Auckland forecasts, there you will see daytime highs for the next 10 days :)

Aaron

ok

OK I saw your latest video. the heat wave will go away on Friday and a front may come through. is that right?

Hi there, yes for the most

Hi there, yes for the most part - especially the further south you live. Friday cools down in the south (some by over 12 degrees!), the lower North Island cools down on Saturday (Hawke's Bay will probably notice it the most with an over 15 degree drop for some compared to Monday this week!), then those in the upper half of the North Island cool down just a couple or few degrees on either Saturday or Sunday. Nothing major but should be a little less stifling.

bottom lighning tracker

hearing thunder

I am in Pakuranga Auckland and I have been hearing low rumbles of thunder and I checked on the lightning tracker and the bottom one said 11 strikes south east of Auckland. could that be hitting Auckland? are heat waves nateral disasters? when will this heat wave last for?

Hi there Don't think there

Hi there

Don't think there has been any lightning / storms near Auckland tonight, must be something else?

If a heatwave was long enough perhaps it could turn it something serious.

Aaron

waitangi day

will it be raining on Waitangi day? or sunny?

It may be fairly dry across

It may be fairly dry across New Zealand then, but depending where you are there could be the chance of a few showers.

hastings coolest temp was 33 oC

Hastings was 33oC . Tutira was 41oC . both are inland. I presume this is day one of the hot spell . how high is danger ?
