As of 2024 we will no longer be publishing questions related to weather forecasts if they are answered via our hyper-local hourly & 10 day forecasts, weather maps and regular daily and monthly weather & climate videos.

Having reviewed Observations in my area for a few weeks now I am either in the middle of a lot of turbulence or some people do not know how to accurately report their observed wind directions. Do you have any process on how you choose which are authentic or just average out for your reporting? Is it worth your contacting all the observers on your contributing database and explaining that the wind direction stated is the direction it is coming from โ€“ not going to. i.e. A southerly wind is a wind that originates from the south and blows towards the north. In other words, itโ€™s a wind coming from the south.

Can you explain why the rain radar maps that the Met Service provide have such a bizarre colour scheme? It makes them very hard to read, and as a geographer it breaks my heart to see a system that has no logical progression from low to high in it. Other countries seem to use much more intuitive spectral scales.

Hi Phil, when the forecast for a particular location says x amount of rain today, and then x amount of rain tonight โ€“ between which hours is today, and between which is tonight? Hope that makes sense.

WW Forecast Team on 26/06/2025 4:31am

Hi Dylan, the โ€˜Todayโ€™ rainfall goes from 6am to 6pm, โ€˜Tonightโ€™ covers 6pm to 6am. Rainfall totals update hourly, which means on the day itself those totals can shift around, especially if there are isolated heavy downpours around your region.

Under โ€œTrendsโ€ in the WeatherWatch App, or at RuralWeather.co.nz you can also see rainfall in clearer visual/graph form, which helps work out general start, peak and end time of rain events. Along with forecast totals.

Hope that helps!

Hi;

Is there sometimes a discrepancy between your cumulative rainfall map and what is forecast at a particular location?

By that I mean, I can look at the cumulative rainfall map and get a good indication of how much rainfall will be at a particular location. Then when I directly search for the detailed forecast for that location the cumulative rainfall for the same time period doesnโ€™t match what the map says.

Sometimes the appears to be significant differences.

Cheers,

WW Forecast Team on 25/06/2025 4:54am

Hi Blake, the cumulative map is a global product made by GFS (America) and updated daily. Itโ€™s generally a good guide but isnโ€™t as localised as the data we have on our websites/app which update houly and factors in much more detail, including understanding the local topography better and using AI to learn from previous mistakes. Both are useful together, but in messy set-ups (like we have later this week) the varying wind directions in each update can alter rainfall totals due to our mountains and ranges. So the big picture map is good to see if heavy rain is nearby (and may move your way if things change) and the local updates are great for drilling down deeper and seeing the current best thinking for where you are.
Hope that helps,
Cheers
