As of 2024 we will no longer be publishing questions related to weather forecasts if they are answered via our hyper-local hourly & 10 day forecasts, weather maps and regular daily and monthly weather & climate videos.
We’re a small NZ business with limited resources to respond to general weather questions. Our social media pages may be helpful to you, especially if you want to often talk (or groan!) about your local weather. You can find more resources from us here if that’s your thing.
Have questions of a commercial nature? Contact us directly here.
Thanks for your support!
Don’t forget to check out our RuralWeather.co.nz website (great for event planning or attending + camping!) and also, our brand new Weather Alerting App!

I was wondering what makes WeatherWatch more accurate than the Android weather app?
Couple days ago, the weather app showed a forecast for thunder and rain, whereas WW showed less than 50% chance of rain, which ended up being a lot more accurate.
Cheers,
Cameron.

Hi Cameron, We use The Weather Company – as they are the world’s most accurate weather forecaster, whereas Android phones get their data from a variety of sources. We also add our own formula to some of the data, to improve it in New Zealand due to: 1) NZ’s rugged topography, and 2) The lack of open data from the two commercial Government Agencies (Niwa and MetService).
This forces us to do better – but if we had Government/public weather data (like all other modern nations) we’d be able to nail all isolated downpours/showers too. That is a blindspot the Government has purposely created to keep their two Weather Agencies more commercially viable/relevant.
Also, in Auckland, we manually adjust some forecasts. Wish we had the resources to do that for everyone. 🙂
Thanks for the message
Cheers

Hey Phil & WW Team
Just wondering if any models show a change from the spring like weather for the East Cost of the North Island.
A decent drop of Easterly rain would be more than welcome.
Understand nature etc.
Keep up the good work.
Cheers.

Hi LJ, check out our latest ClimateWatch monthly outlook for October if you haven’t already: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Sha2cnfhME
At this stage no sudden change to the current westerly theme – which means the east continues to dry out for now. There’s a solid westerly flow at the moment unfortunately for you. Sorry I can’t give more positive news – but we’re looking for that next eastern rainmaker every day now.

Hi,
Does the WeatherWatch app work in any other country in the world when traveling abroad when we use the current location feature?
Reply
WW Forecast Team on 5/10/2025 8:30pm
Hi there, yes it does – although you cannot search for global locations you can use the GPS ‘find my location’ feature and it will find your local forecast wherever you are on earth. Side note: While the graphs and data will be for wherever you are, all the maps will still be NZ centric.
Cheers

Looks as if the rain for Central Otago should be gone by early afternoon tomorrow.
