Wednesday’s national forecast

An anticyclone in the south Tasman Sea and another to the northeast of the country spread a ridge between them over New Zealand today. Conditions for the most parts will be mainly settled although areas of cloud will persist for some. A low pressure system in the north Tasman Sea makes it’s presence felt for the upper North Island by midday.

Northland, Auckland
Risk of the odd shower in the morning, expect cloudy spells and some sun at times. From midday high cloud thickens from the north. Southwest breezes ease with light variable winds by evening. Easterly winds pick up a little about the far north of Northland at night.
High: 14-15

Bay Of Plenty, Waikato & Central North Island
Cloudy spells and some sun about the Waikato and Central North Island with southwest breezes, a few morning showers possible. Sunny about the Bay Of Plenty with light southwest breezes and warmer temperatures. High cloud thickens for all from afternoon.
Highs: 10-15

Eastern North Island
Sunny with light winds, potentially a frosty start.
High: 13-14

Western North Island
A mix of sunny and cloudy periods, light winds tend southerly. Chance of a morning shower, mainly north of about Taranaki otherwise mainly dry.
Highs: 12-14

Wellington
Mostly sunny with light winds.
Highs: 11-12

Marlborough & Nelson
Sunny with light winds after a frosty start.
Highs: 11-12

Canterbury
Sunny after a frosty start, light winds may tend southwest in the afternoon.
Highs: 10-12

West Coast
Mostly sunny with light winds.
High: 11-12

Southland & Otago
Mostly cloudy about Southland with the odd shower at times, breezy southwesterlies. Sunny and cloudy spells elsewhere with west to southwest winds, the odd shower may sneak into coastal areas south of Dunedin at times.

I have to agree with SW. I’m in Auckland at the moment and it’s amazing that the showers seem to come from nowhere!
