Wednesday’s national forecast

Upper North Island

Mostly cloudy skies with westerly breezes, the odd shower developing around midday about the Waikato, Auckland and Coromandel. The few showers that are about clear the Waikato mid afternoon then Auckland and Coromandel by evening. Sunny areas break through in the Waikato from mid afternoon. A few light showers move into Northland later overnight. Bay Of Plenty remaining largely dry for the day although expect plenty of cloud. Southwesterly breezes in Gisborne today with some cloud, chance of a morning shower. Winds tend northeast during the afternoon with sunny areas breaking through.
HIGHS: 20-22 for most.

Lower North Island

Expect mostly cloudy skies in the west with showers this morning in Taranaki and western parts of the Central North Island, westerly breezes. Showers clear off to the north around midday and sun breaks through. Westerly breezes ease off early this morning about Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay, expect some high cloud to clear away to the north by midday. Sunny in the afternoon with winds tending northeast. Any early morning cloud clears about Wellington to a mostly sunny day with light winds.
HIGHS: Temperatures in the high teens for most, 22-23 in Hawkes Bay.

Upper South Island

Mostly sunny in Nelson with light winds after early high cloud clears. A mix of sunny areas and some cloud on the West Coast north of Hokitika with west to southwest breezes. Mostly sunny about Canterbury and Marlborough with light winds tending southwesterly on the coast, northeasterlies develop during the afternoon for most. At night winds tend to the southwest in Canterbury.
HIGHS: 17 on the West Coast, low 20’s in Nelson, Marlborough and Canterbury.

Lower South Island

Cloudy periods right on the Southland coast with the chance of a brief shower now and then, sunny with some cloud elsewhere. Winds will be breezy from the west, westerlies strong possibly gusting to gale force at times about the Southland coast. Winds change southwest overnight with more widespread showers developing. Cloudy in Fiordland with westerly breezes and the odd shower, cloudy areas further north towards Hokitika but some sun possible at times also.
HIGHS: 16-17 for most, 20 for inland Otago, 15 on the West Coast south of the Glaciers.
