It’s probably the biggest social event of the year for those in Christchurch on Tuesday with Addington’s harness racing Cup Day. But this year the ladies might need waterproof hats as a southerly change rolls through the area around lunchtime.
“Quite typically nor’westers blow through on Cup Day and this year starts off that way, but around noon a cold front will pass through with a cool southerly change that could produce some thundery falls and even isolated hail showers” says head weather analyst Philip Duncan. “The afternoon is looking quite showery”. He says the forecast a couple of days ago wasn’t so bad, but a small low is now expected to form near Banks Peninsula potentially fuelling showery weather right through the afternoon.
“Fingers crossed the showers miss Addington itself, but best bet would be to take a waterproof hat and a raincoat – and with lightning around, perhaps ditch the fancy umbrella”.
Duncan says temperatures in the morning should be mild with the nor’wester, but the southerly in the afternoon, combined with wind chill, could make a ‘feels like’ temperature in the mid to late single digits.
