Tuesday’s national forecast

Fairly unsettled over the country today due to a low pressure system mainly near the South Island. Rain for much of the South Island for a time, heavy on the West Coast. The North Island sees cloudy skies for many, rain moves into the southwestern corner of the Island later in the evening or overnight.

Northland
High cloud, thickening during the afternoon. Northwesterlies slowly build
during the day. Rain moves into the west towards dawn the next morning.

Bay Of Islands

High cloud, thickening during the afternoon. Light winds at first and
northwesterlies slowly picking up after midday.
High: 24

Auckland

Mostly cloudy with westerly breezes, increasing in the afternoon. Rain
towards dawn the next morning.
High: 23

Central North Island, Lake Taupo, Waikato
& Bay Of Plenty

Fairly cloudy with west to northwest breezes. Some rain moves through the
Central North Island and Waikato overnight. The Bay Of Plenty will see high
cloud thickening during the day and the warmest temperatures.
Highs: 21-25

Eastern North Island

Plenty of high cloud with northwesterlies, brisk at times in the afternoon.
Some morning rain may pass through the Wairarapa then clearing before
midday.
Highs: 26-27

Western North Island

Mostly cloudy, a few spits of rain possible at times otherwise dry. Rain
more likely later in the evening and overnight. West to northwesterly winds,
brisk at times from afternoon.
Highs: 19-22

Wellington

Cloudy with spells of rain possible, rain more likely late afternoon and evening then clearing around
midnight. Northerly winds become strong in the afternoon possibly gusting to
gale force at times then easing overnight.
Highs: 19-20

Nelson & Kateriteri

Cloudy with occasional showers, clearing later in the evening as northerly
winds tend more northwest.
Highs: 21-22

Marlborough

Mostly cloudy with brief rain at times, northwesterlies become gusty in the
afternoon. Any remaining rain clears in the evening and northwesterlies ease
overnight with skies clearing up.
Highs: 23-24

Canterbury

Cloudy with spells of rain, clearing early afternoon with sunny areas then
increasing. North to northeasterly winds tend northwest in the afternoon.
Highs: 25-26

West Coast
Rain with heavy
falls at times, easing to showers late afternoon as northerlies change brisk
westerly.

High: 18

Coastal Otago

Rain with northeasterly breezes, chance of an evening heavy fall then clear
spells developing with rain clearing before midnight.
Highs: 18-19

Central Otago

Periods of rain, clear mid to late afternoon as northerlies tend westerly.
Chance of a few late sunny spells.
Highs: 19-21

Southland

Rain with east to northeast breezes, rain eases in the evening and clear as
winds tend northwest.
Highs: 17-18
