Tuesday’s national forecast

A front moves into Central New Zealand today weakening considerably as it does, preceding it is northwesterly winds over the North Island. For the South Island in behind the front sunny spells develop in an easing southwesterly airflow. There may be a few isolated showers pop up about southern Canterbury and northern Otago during the afternoon and evening however.

Northland
Mostly sunny with light westerlies lifting to a moderate breeze in the afternoon. Some cloud develops in the west from evening.
High: 20

Auckland
Sunny spells with westerly winds becoming breezy in the afternoon, cloud thickens later in the evening.
High: 18

Bay Of Plenty, Waikato & Central North Island
Sunny spells and some cloud, cloud thickens about the Central North Island in the afternoon then elsewhere in the evening. Westerly breezes. The odd light shower possible about the Waikato and Central North Island overnight.
Highs: 16-20

Eastern North Island
Sunny with thickening high cloud, thick high cloud will be about Wairarapa from morning. Northwesterly winds, strong about Wairarapa. Overnight some rain develops with winds tending southerly.
Highs: 21-23

Western North Island
Cloudy spells thicken in the afternoon, brisk northwesterly winds strong at times. The odd shower or drizzle patch about Kapiti and northern Taranaki then more widespread rain develops later in the evening.
High: 17-19

Wellington
Cloudy with strong to gale force northerly winds, some scattered rain develops late afternoon then eases around midnight with a southerly change.
Highs: 15-16

Nelson
Cloudy with the odd shower, mainly afternoon. Breezy northwesterlies. Showers clearing around midnight as winds ease and tend southerly.
High: 17

Marlborough
Thick high cloud with gusty northwesterlies, late afternoon or evening winds change southerly bringing the chance of a shower.
Highs: 21-22

Canterbury
Winds change southerly in the morning bringing occasional rain, rain clears in the afternoon with a few sunny spells developing. Late afternoon or evening there is the risk of an isolated shower mainly inland about South and perhaps Mid Canterbury.
High: 14-15

West Coast
Rain, heavy in the morning then easing afternoon and clearing evening. Breezy northerlies change southwesterly just after midday.
High: 15

Coastal Otago
Early morning showers clear then becoming mostly sunny, southwesterly breezes die out in the evening. A few isolated showers possible in the afternoon then clearing evening.
High: 14

Central Otago
Early rain clears then sunny areas increase, becoming mostly sunny in the afternoon with southwesterly breezes. There may be an isolated shower in eastern parts of the region late afternoon or evening.
High: 16

Southland
Some cloud with the odd sunny spell, brisk westerly winds. Chance of the odd shower in the afternoon.
High: 13
