Tuesday’s national forecast

Mostly sunny in the North Island with any early showers clearing in central regions, winds will be light from the north. Showers will develop in the morning about Northland however spreading to Auckland this afternoon then entering parts of the Waikato and Bay of Plenty by evening or at night. Morning rain about Hawkes Bay and Gisborne will clear by midday with sunny breaks then developing, light winds.

Rain about Wellington and southern parts of Wairarapa eases during the day to clear in the evening. Low teen temperatures in the south and mid teen high’s in the north.

It will be wet on the east coast of the South Island with rain heavy at times especially in inland areas i.e. the foothills in Canterbury. East to southeaterly winds will be gusty, snow flurries to 800m later in the day in Canterbury. Showers about the top of the South Island and in Southland clearing in the afternoon or becoming patchy with dry spells, sunny breaks in Nelson for the afternoon look likely. The West Coast should remain dry with sunny spells and gusty east to southeasterly winds, perhaps a few showers at times north of Hokitika however.

Low double figure high’s for most South Island regions today however on the West Coast temperatures will be mild in the afternoon up in the mid teens perhaps a little higher.
