Thursday’s national forecast

An anticyclone sits to the north of New Zealand today while a northwest airflow slowly builds over the country. Wet weather for the South Island’s West Coast, dry for most others although there may be a few early showers in the west of the North Island.

Northland
Mostly sunny with a moderate west to southwest breeze, dying out in the evening. Some eastern coastal areas may be quite sheltered and have light winds during the day with mainly sunny skies.
Highs: 18-20

Auckland
Chance of an early shower then expect sunny areas and some cloud with breezy west to southwest winds easing in the evening.
High: 18

Bay Of Plenty, Waikato & Central North Island
Sunny spells with westerly breezes, sunny areas longer about the Bay Of Plenty with mostly sunny skies almost. There may also be an early shower about the Central North Island and Waikato any of which clear, early showers more likely in the west of these regions.
Highs: 17-20

Eastern North Island
Sunny with west to southwest winds easing away in the morning about Hawkes Bay and Gisborne. The Wairarapa may see westerlies continue to blow through during the afternoon.
Highs: 19-22

Western North Island
Any early showers clear then expect cloudy and sunny spells with breezy westerly winds.
High: 17

Wellington
Mostly sunny with northerly winds becoming strong in the afternoon. Cloud increases overnight.
High: 17

Nelson
Mostly sunny with westerly breezes, winds tend more northerly in the afternoon then ease in the evening.
High: 18

Marlborough
Sunny with northwesterly breezes, warm afternoon temperatures. High cloud develops overnight.
High: 22-24

Canterbury
Sunny with some high cloud, thickening from evening. Light winds push through from the northwest in the afternoon. A really nice day with warm temperatures.
Highs: 22-24

West Coast
Cloudy with showers, northwesterly winds. Showers turn to rain overnight.
High: 15

Coastal Otago
Sunny with some high cloud, thickening from afternoon. Northwesterly breezes gusty at times after midday. Winds tend more northerly at night.
Highs: 20-22

Southland & Central Otago
Sunny with thickening high cloud, breezy northwesterly winds strong at times from afternoon about Southland. Rain moves in overnight with a westerly change.
High: 16-20

hi. current weather here, 20km nth of Rotorua (Mamaku/Kaimai ranges) is very different to weather forecast. here its dull overcast sky, breezy westerlies. Indoor temp is 16 deg and outdoor temp on gauge shoes 9deg. I note many houses have smoke coming out of their chimneys, Quite a bit different to met serv and to a degree your forecast,

Looks to have been some stubborn morning cloud. I see the cloud looks to of broken around midday then this forecast became relevant.
