Thursday’s national forecast

A front moves onto western New Zealand today from the Tasman Sea bringing rain to the West Coast of the South Island this afternoon and to most western parts of the North Island this evening. Taranaki gets the rain a bit earlier however. Mainly dry out east with warm temperatures and increasing high cloud.

Auckland & Northland
Mostly cloudy, northwesterly winds freshen. Rain moves in during the evening then eases before midnight.
Highs: 17-19

Bay Of Plenty

Mostly sunny with westerlies tending northerly this afternoon, cloud
thickens from mid afternoon then expect a period of evening rain which clears
before midnight.
High: 18

Waikato & Central North Island

Increasing cloud with a spit or two of rain possible from afternoon, more
widespread rain develops in the evening then eases back to showers later.
Northwesterly winds.
Highs: 16-17

Eastern North Island

Sunny with some high cloud developing from afternoon, light winds freshen
from the northwest. Overnight there could be a spot or two of rain.
Highs: 19-20

Western North Island

Sunny areas and increasing cloud with freshening northwesterlies, chance of
a light shower at times from midday. Rain moves into Taranaki mid afternoon then
late afternoon further south for a time. Rain eases to showers for all by
evening as winds change westerly.
Highs: 15-18

Wellington

Increasing cloud with freshening north to northwesterly winds, a few
evening spells of rain possible.
High: 14

Nelson

Mostly sunny to start however becoming cloudy after midday with
northwesterlies freshening. Some patchy rain develops mid afternoon then clears
in the evening.
High: 17

Marlborough

Sunny with high cloud thickening from afternoon, northwesterly winds
freshen after midday. A few spots of rain possible late afternoon /
evening.
High: 19

Canterbury

Sunny areas and some developing high cloud, light winds freshen from the
northwest later on.
Highs: 19-20

West Coast

Cloud increases from morning, rain about Fiordland moves onto the rest of
the West Coast in the afternoon. Northwesterly winds.
High: 15

Coastal Otago

Areas of high cloud with light northerlies, overnight showers possibly
heavy move in as winds change southwest.
High: 15

Central Otago

Cloudy areas with light northwesterlies. Chance of a spot of rain at times
otherwise dry. Showers then rain moves in overnight with a southwest
change.
Highs: 14-15

Southland

Chance of a light shower in the morning then clearing, fairly cloudy with
light northerlies tending southwest in the afternoon. Showers move in again in
the evening then expect overnight rain.
High: 13
