Thursday’s national forecast

A cold southwesterly airflow lies over New Zealand today. Showers mainly affect Southland, Otago and western regions of both islands. 

Auckland & Northland
Occasional showers, heavy for a time around midday as westerlies change gusty southwest.
High: 16

Bay Of Plenty

Morning westerlies with cloudy periods and a few showers developing, showers clear by midday with sunny spells increasing as winds change brisk
southwest.
Highs: 15-16

Waikato & Central North Island

A period of morning showers then clearing by midday, sunny spells increase
in the afternoon. Brisk southwesterly winds. The odd shower (and snow flurry to
800m about the CNI) may hang about southern parts of the Central North Island
and western Waikato into the afternoon any of which clear evening.
Highs: 12-14

Eastern North Island

Morning cloud periods with the chance of a shower, mainly about the
Wairarapa then clearing. Sunny areas increase from midday with gusty cool
southwesterlies, easing from evening.
Highs: 15-16

Western North Island

Cloudy periods with brisk to strong WSW winds, occasional showers mainly in
the morning then easing afternoon. WSW winds ease overnight. About northern
Taranaki sunny spells break through after midday.
Highs: 13-14

Wellington

Some morning cloud with a few showers moving through as westerlies freshen,
sunny spells then increase from midday. Westerlies ease from evening.
High: 12

Nelson

Any early cloud clears to sunny weather with cold southwesterlies, easing
overnight.
High: 12-13

Marlborough

Some early cloud clears to a sunny day. Cool west to southwest winds,
easing overnight. There may be a brief shower or two right on the coast south of
Clifford Bay mid to late morning.
Highs: 13-14

Canterbury

A few brief morning showers, mainly near the coast then sunny spells
increasing. Cold southwesterly winds.
Highs: 11-12

West Coast

Showers with dry breaks becoming more frequent as the day goes on then
clearing evening, brisk cold southwesterlies. Snow flurries to 700, perhaps
600m.
High: 10-11

Coastal Otago

Cloudy periods with wintry showers (showers / small hail) developing mid to
late morning, showers ease then clear in the evening. Snow flurries to 500m at
first lowering to 400m by evening then clearing. Strong cold southwesterlies,
gusting to gale force on the coast then easing overnight.
High: 8

Central Otago

Showers with small hail and cold southwesterly winds, showers clear around
midday with sunny spells then developing. Snow to 600m in the morning then
lowering to 500m around midday before clearing. Frosty overnight.
High: 6

Southland

Showers with small hail and strong cold southwesterly winds, showers ease
in the evneing then clear by midnight. Snow to 500m in the morning then lowering
to 300m in the evening before clearing.
High: 7
