Thursday night’s national forecast

Ex Tropical Cyclone Ita lies just off the coast west of New Zealand tonight, most of the severe weather across the North Island has eased although along the east coast and Wellington heavy rain is still likely (clearing Wellington overnight). Strong easterlies gusting to gale force are likely too about the east coast and lower North Island, however they will ease overnight. The South Island still has some rough weather to take in before this system eases tomorrow, heavy rain is likely in the east from Canterbury northwards. Strong to gale southeasterly winds will affect many especially in the west north of Hokitika although those winds will ease slightly overnight.

Cloudy spells and the odd isolated shower, northerly winds.

Periods of cloud with the odd shower possible, northeasterly winds.

Bay Of Plenty

Cloudy with the odd shower, heavy rain in the east of the district eases
this evening. Towards dawn tomorrow further heavy falls are possible.

Waikato & Central North Island

Cloudy areas, periods of rain about the Central North Island with the odd
heavy fall eases this evening. The odd shower at times elsewhere. Northeasterly
winds.

Eastern North Island

Rain with heavy falls, strong to gale easterly winds ease overnight.
Tonight’s Lows: 14-16

Western North Island

Rain with strong easterlies gusting to gale force, easing overnight. About
Taranaki periods of rain with the odd heavy fall easing later this evening.
Towards dawn tomorrow rain picks up again in northern parts of the district,
strong east to northeast winds.

Wellington

Rain with heavy falls easing this evening, strong to gale easterly winds
ease overnight.

Nelson

Periods of rain with the odd heavy fall easing this evening, gale
southeasterly winds tend more easterly by midnight and ease up.

Marlborough

Heavy rain eases early on, periods of rain continue at times for the rest
of the day. Brisk easterlies tend northerly in the afternoon at which point
sunny spells may break through also.

Canterbury

Rain with heavy falls, especially North Canterbury where torrential areas
of rain look likely. Strong southeasterlies possibly gale force about the
coast.

West Coast

Cloudy with the odd shower, strong gales with storm force winds at times
especially north of Hokitika. Winds easing a little overnight.

Coastal Otago

Cloudy with patchy showers turning to rain later, brisk easterlies becoming
strong.
Tonight’s Low: 9

Central Otago

Cloudy with brisk to strong easterlies, the odd patchy shower bout
especially in the north and east of the district.
Tonight’s Lows: 5-6

Southland

Cloudy or becoming cloudy this evening, chance of a brief shower or two
after dark. Brisk to strong easterly winds.
