Thursday night’s national forecast

A strong west to southwesterly airflow lies over the country this evening with an anticyclone still stuck to the west of New Zealand in the Tasman Sea, this means generally speaking cool overnight temperatures. The West Coast of the South Island gets the majority of any potential rain out there although North Canterbury may see a isolated heavy fall or two before clearing by midnight.

Clear spells and some cloud, brisk southwesterly winds ease
overnight.

Central North Island, Waikato
& Bay Of Plenty

Clear spells and some cloud with brisk westerlies easing this evening,
there is the risk of a shower towards dawn tomorrow morning about the Central
North Island.
Tonight’s Lows: 10-13

Eastern North Island

Clear skies with gusty westerly winds, easing overnight. Winds will be
strong about the Wairarapa.
Tonight’s Low: 13

Western North Island

Mainly clear skies with strong westerly winds easing later this evening.
Some cloud and the chance of a shower overnight, northern Taranaki stays mainly
dry.

Wellington

Clear skies with strong northerlies easing overnight.

Nelson

Mainly clear skies with gusty southwesterlies easing overnight, there is
the low risk of a brief shower just after midnight.

Clear skies with gusty west to northwest winds easing overnight.
Tonight’s Lows: 9-10

Canterbury

Showers about North Canterbury, possibly heavy clearing later this evening.
Cool southerlies. Elsewhere expect areas of cloud with southerlies dying out
this evening, light winds overnight.

West Coast

Areas of rain this evening easing to showers overnight and gradually
clearing by dawn tomorrow. Cool southwesterlies.

Coastal Otago

Showers clearing this evening, strong southwesterlies gale force about the
coast ease overnight. A shower or two may return tomorrow morning around
dawn.

Central Otago

Areas of cloud with brisk southwesterlies easing overnight.
Tonight’s Lows: 6-7

Southland

Showers with strong to gale westerly winds easing overnight, showers clear
this evening then a few may return after midnight.
