Sunday night’s national forecast

A tropical low moves closer to the upper North Island overnight, the main feature at the moment being thick high cloud spreading over the island from the north. For the South Island a front is slowly moving north this evening and overnight and weakens as it does, expect rain on the West Coast. A southerly change in the east brings cloud and a risk of drizzle.

Auckland & Northland
High cloud thickening this evening, sea breezes ease. Light winds overnight gradually tend easterly, the odd spit or drizzle patch possible towards dawn for Northland.

Central North Island, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Clear skies with high cloud developing gradually this evening then thickening overnight, westerlies ease for most although expect easing northerlies about the Bay Of Plenty.

Eastern North Island

Mainly clear skies with high cloud thickening up overnight, northwesterly winds for most strong about the
Wairarapa although sea breezes about Hawkes Bay ease this evening then light winds there overnight.

Western North Island

Mainly clear skies although high cloud thickening up overnight, west to northwest winds.
Tonight’s lows: 13-14

Wellington

Areas of cloud thicken overnight, strong northerly winds gale force at times this evening ease a little overnight also.

Nelson

Mainly clear skies, northerlies ease later this evening then expect light winds overnight with some high cloud developing.
Tonight’s low: 14

Marlborough

Mainly clear skies, gusty northwesterlies ease overnight with some high cloud then moving in.
Tonight’s lows: 12-13

Canterbury

Some high cloud, southerlies move into South and Mid Canterbury this evening bringing cloud and the odd drizzle patch later. Southerlies move into North Canterbury overnight bringing cloud, conditions may remain fairly dry although the risk of a drizzle patch is possible.

West Coast

Rain this evening with a heavy fall or two possible, northwesterly winds. Rain eases overnight to the odd shower as winds change southwest.

Coastal Otago

The odd shower or drizzle patch clears this evening, clear spells may break through overnight. Light winds.

Central Otago

West to southwest breezes ease overnight with a few clear spells breaking through.
Tonight’s lows: 8-9

Southland

Cloudy periods with strong to gale westerly winds easing overnight. There may be a brief spit or two overnight otherwise mainly dry.
