Severe Weather Warnings issued across both islands

The government forecaster has issued wind and rain warnings across the country ahead of a more spring-like system that’s moving in from the west.

Hawkes Bay

Strong Wind Warning, Areas Affected: Wairarapa to Hawkes Bay south of Waipukurau, including the Tararau District Northwest gales are expected to develop overnight, with severe gale gusts of 130 km/h likely in exposed places from the early hours of Monday morning. These winds should ease south of Masterton around mid-afternoon Monday and further north late afternoon.

Wairarapa

Strong Wind Warning, Areas Affected: Wairarapa to Hawkes Bay south of Waipukurau, including the Tararau District Northwest gales are expected to develop overnight, with severe gale gusts of 130 km/h likely in exposed places from the early hours of Monday morning. These winds should ease south of Masterton around mid-afternoon Monday and further north late afternoon.

Westland

Heavy Rain Warning, Areas Affected: Westland south of Otira Rain is expected to become heavy this afternoon or early evening. In the 18 hours starting around 3pm Sunday south of Franz Josef and 6pm Sunday further north, expect 100 to 150mm of rain in the ranges and 60mm near the coast. Heaviest falls are expected after 9pm Sunday and could reach 30mm per hour for a time in the ranges.

Fiordland

Heavy Rain Warning, Areas Affected: Fiordland Rain is expected to become heavy from around midday today. In the 18 hours from midday Sunday to 6am Monday, expect around 100mm of rain. Heaviest falls expected after 6pm Sunday when rates could reach 20mm per hour.

Christchurch

Strong Wind Warning, Areas Affected: Inland North Canterbury Northwest gales are expected in exposed places from this evening through to Monday morning, with possible severe gale gusts of 120 km/h between 9pm Sunday and 6am Monday.

Canterbury Plains

Strong Wind Warning, Areas Affected: Inland North Canterbury Northwest gales are expected in exposed places from this evening through to Monday morning, with possible severe gale gusts of 120 km/h between 9pm Sunday and 6am Monday.

Canterbury High Country

Strong Wind Warning, Areas Affected: Inland North Canterbury Northwest gales are expected in exposed places from this evening through to Monday morning, with possible severe gale gusts of 120 km/h between 9pm Sunday and 6am Monday.
