Saturday’s national forecast

A front works its way over the North Island today bringing rain as it moves north, gale northerly winds about Cook Strait and Wellington ease mid afternoon onwards as the front clears. For the South Island expect showers in the west with dry conditions out east. A southerly works it’s way into Canterbury Banks Peninsula southwards late afternoon bringing showers, some possibly heavy with hail.

Auckland & Northland
Sunny spells with northwesterly winds, becoming brisk in the afternoon. Chance of a brief shower at times otherwise mainly dry. Later in the evening a period of rain moves through with a westerly change.

Central North Island, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty

Mostly cloudy skies with increasing northwesterlies, becoming brisk in the afternoon. The odd brief shower possible at times then evening rain with a westerly change. Rain clears by midnight. Bay Of Plenty stays mostly dry till evening rain moves through.
Highs: 20-24

Eastern North Island

Thick high cloud with strengthening northwesterly winds, gales possible about Wairarapa. Late afternoon and evening a few brief showers may pass over from the west then clearing with winds tending westerly and easing.
Highs: 26-27

Western North Island

Strong northerlies, gusting to gale force at times. Mostly cloudy with the odd shower about northern Taranaki and Kpaiti, widespread rain developing around midday with the chance of a heavy fall or two. Winds change gusty westerly in the afternoon with rain easing then clearing by evening.
Highs: 20-21

Wellington

Cloudy with strong to gale northerly winds, some rain develops in the morning then clears early afternoon as gale northerlies ease. Clear spells towards evening.
Highs: 18-19

Nelson

Morning rain develops with brisk northerlies, clearing early afternoon and becoming mostly sunny as winds change brisk westerly.
Highs: 19-20

Marlborough

Thick high cloud with strong to gale northwesterly winds, some brief rain around midday then winds tend a little more westerly in the afternoon with conditions becoming mostly sunny.
Highs: 22-23

Canterbury

Briefly early rain clearing then mostly sunny with westerly breezes. Late afternoon southerlies develop Banks Peninsula southwards along the coast with showers, possibly heavy with some hail then clearing evening.
Highs: 19-21

West Coast

Heavy morning rain eases to showers as northerlies change gusty WSW. There may be brief sunny spells at times from afternoon. Overnight about South Westland another period of rain moves through.
High: 16

Coastal Otago

Winds change gusty southwest in the morning bringing a few showers and the chance of some hail, sunny spells after midday with brisk westerly winds. Overinght or towards dawn on Sunday winds change strong southwest again bringing a few heavy showers.
Highs: 14-15

Central Otago

A period of showers develop in the morning, some possibly heavy with hail then easing and clearing in the afternoon with sunny spells. Gusty westerly winds. Overnight another period of showers move through.
Highs: 13-15

Southland

Cloudy periods with showers, some heavy in the morning with hail. Winds gusty from the west then tending northwest later in the evening. Showers heavy again overnight as northwesterlies change gusty southwest.
Highs: 11-12
