Monday night’s national forecast

The front that caused strong winds and thunderstorms over the South Island today moves north onto the North Island overnight. The strongest winds will likely be about Cook Strait and Wellington.

Auckland & Northland
Mostly cloudy with strong northwesterly winds. The odd shower possible otherwise mainly dry. Overnight showers a bit more likely then expect rain towards dawn tomorrow morning, rain may become heavy as it arrives.

Bay Of Plenty, Waikato & Central North Island
Cloudy with the odd shower possible, rain about Waikato and western parts of the Central North Island then becoming heavy overnight before spreading into the Bay Of Plenty later in the night. Winds gusty from the northwest.
Tonight’s lows: 13-15

Eastern North Island
Clear with high cloud thickening overnight, winds strong from the northwest gusting to gale force at times. Rain moves into the Wairarapa overnight with winds changing westerly there later.
Tonight’s lows: 12-14

Western North Island
Rain moves in this evening becoming heavy. Strong northwesterlies gusting to gale force at times in exposed areas. Winds change westerly overnight.
Tonight’s lows: 7-9

Wellington
Rain, possibly heavy for a time then easing later this evening. Gale northerlies easing slightly around midnight.
Tonight’s lows: 10-11

Nelson
Rain, heavy for a time with gale northerly winds. Rain eases to the odd shower later which clears overnight as winds change southwest.
Tonight’s lows: 7-8

Marlborough
Rain, clearing later this evening or around midnight. Strong to gale northwesterlies ease overnight.
Tonight’s lows: 6-7

Canterbury
Rain about North Canterbury clearing, high cloud decreases overnight with northerly winds tending westerly then easing.
Tonight’s lows: 3-4

West Coast
Remaining heavy rain with thunderstorms easing about Buller this evening to the odd shower. Showers elsewhere with brisk west to southwest winds.
Tonight’s low: 5

Coastal Otago
Showers, possibly heavy with hail clearing later this evening, gusty westerly winds. Clear spells overnight.
Tonight’s low: 5-6

Central Otago
Mainly cloudy with the odd shower, a risk of small hail too then. A few snow flurries to 600m. Cold southwesterlies ease overnight and winds tend westerly.
Tonight’s low: 2

Southland
Showers, some may be heavy at times with hail. Gusty westerly winds. Snow flurries to 600m.
Tonight’s lows: 4-5
