Friday night’s national forecast

Upper North Island

The odd shower about Northland, clearing this evening with west to southwest winds easing overnight. Some cloud and the chance of a few showers again towards dawn tomorrow morning as winds tend northerly. Auckland and the Waikato sees clear spells and some cloud with west to southwest breezes easing later this evening, isolated showers about the Waikato clear. Some cloud about the Bay Of Plenty with northerlies easing later this evening, heavy showers with possible thunderstorms about inland eastern Bay Of Plenty clear later this evening.

Lower North Island

Showers along the east coast, some heavy with possibly thunderstorms about Hawkes Bay and Gisborne then clearing later this evening, east to northeast winds ease later. Showers continue overnight for Wellington with brisk southerlies. Showers on the west coast south of Wanganui clear this evening with light winds tending southeasterly. The odd shower may move in again about coastal southern Taranaki overnight.

Upper South Island

Showers about Marlborough with south to southeasterly breezes. Clear with a few clouds about Nelson with northerlies easing this evening, Some cloud for Buller, breaking up a little overnight with light winds. Canterbury sees drizzle patches with south to southwesterly breezes.

Lower South Island

 Mainly clear skies on the West Coast overnight with ligth winds. Mainly clear skies about Southland and Central Otago too, winds from the easterly quarter. About coastal Otago expect sunny spells with easterly winds, areas of cloud build later this evening with the chance of some drizzle overnight.
