2012- An average year or one to remember?

Will 2012 be a year to remember in terms of weather for New Zealand?

We’ve had our moments of extreme weather but mostly in pockets and what event can you recall being the standout?

Perhaps it was a season where it was particularly wet or cold or perhaps windy?

Can you recall a dry spell with warm to very warm temperatures? Will it be Nelson, Blenheim or Whakatane to have the highest number of sunshine hours this year?

So many questions but one of the events that stood out for WeatherWatch was the September 4 storm that rattled Christchurch,
Spectacular lightning, thunder and large hail peppered the city with many vehicles claiming insurance damage due to the severity of the hail.

For some locals it was very frightening and it was also the two year anniversay of the 7.1 September 4 earthquake in 2010.

We’d like to get your thoughts on how you’ve seen the year and any weather situations that have remained with you.

Since my previous comment has failed to appear, I’ll repeat it in short form: Whakatane will get the highest sunshine total, but this is misleading. Nelson is the real winner.

The hobsonville storm my four year old child was in daycare there. He is safe thank goodness. Our old house in the same street had it’s roof ripped off. Many of our friends have lost a place to live over the holiday season. The deaths were a tragic. My heart goes out to all those involved. But thanks to weather watch I heard about the storm very quickly after it happened and could go and get my son. Thanks guys you do great work.

A few highlights for Christchurch – the early winter snow in June was nice, the September lightning was awesome and the warm (25-30+) and dry December to end the year was great. Also only a one or two quakes since January worth any real attention.
