Before asking us a question:
We love to have comments and questions posted here at WeatherWatch.co.nz - but before you ask a long range weather question (ie, beyond our 10 day forecast above) please check our interactive maps page first! This link will take you to our Rain, Wind, Swell, Temperature maps and more - going out 10 days.

Hey Graeme - we're aiming to have our first forecast out on Monday :) It will be very generic and about the general theme of highs and lows around the week of Christmas time - but it's at least one step in trying to lock it in!
Cheers

Temperatures
Hi there - fair question -
Hi there - fair question - those maps are more about the trends warmer or cooler overall. We take more time in our detailed main centre forecasts to forecast true maximums (as city roads and buildings make it hotter). The temps they show are for the airport - which is mostly grass with no buildings around, hence the difference,
Cheers :)

Hi David
They are thickness lines, and mean literally what it says. They stand for the thickness of the atmosphere, cold atmosphere's aren't as thick while hot atmospheres are.
Here's some info on thickness: http://www.theweatherprediction.com/habyhints/148/

Hmm, and now it's back to just Sunday with a thunderstorm icon.
I think you'll find the further you go out forecasts for certain days are often going to change and flip around, especially when computer generated. Out till Saturday it's best to pay attention to the forecasts we personally see over on weatherwatch.co.nz, you can tell we have adjusted them due to the little "WW" symbol at the end. Anything beyond that is computer generated. Sometimes forecasts are best 4 to 5 days out at the most, beyond that conditions can frequently change.

Hi there - the weather never stops! We update hourly to ensure we have the best data - rather than holding on to a forecast we once thought was right, as our competitors may do. So check back a few times a day to really be on top of it all. :)

Hi there
Looks like a dry morning then some rain or showers moving in during the afternoon. This could change between now and then as it is 5 days away, but thats a simple look at how things are looking for Auckland this coming Sunday.

Hi there S.H, thank you for
Hi there S.H, thank you for your message and we're really glad to have you along. We are modernising some things in January so we hope the changes we make, will make things a little easier to use. Our goal right across next year is to gradually make everything more user friendly. We also run www.RuralWeather.co.nz which has more weather data on it than MetService and Niwa combined and it's entirely free (not paid for with taxes like they are). It takes 10 seconds to load due to so much data on it (and we are addressing the slow launch speed early next year too) but it gives you high level data if you need to drill down beyond the daily WeatherWatch products. It also covers all airports, suburbs and towns too.
Cheers :)

Hi there, we have forecasts for every small part of NZ so just go to our homepage and search for your location. You'll then find a general forecast then Hourly forecasts for Saturday 7th. On top of that, watch our latest weather video to make sense of it all.

Te aroha Weather Saturday 30th

Hi there, you'll need to contact Government Agency NIWA for that sorry. They have tax funded weather obs in Te Aroha but refuse to openly share that tax funded data - which is why the Commerce Commission is now investigating them! So send Niwa an email with your question.

Auckland 7th dec
Hi there, it's too early to
Hi there, it's too early to lock in thunderstorms that far out - will have a better idea in few days time how bad (or good) Saturday looks. Right now we know we have the ingredients to make thunder, but timing isn't accurate this far out - neither is exactly placement. So watch this space and keep an eye on the hourly % of rain in our 10 day forecasts :)

7th December
Hi there The 7th of Dec is
Hi there
The 7th of Dec is currently looking dry for Tauranga. Mostly sunny with some high cloud, light WNW winds.
High's in the early 20's.
But you are talking about a day that is 8 or so days out so things can change in that time frame. Keep an eye on these maps: https://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/forecast-maps/rain
You can zoom in and using the drop down menu to skip to a certain point in the future, you can see the areas of rain represented by shaded areas of colour. Lighter colours represent light rainfall or only the odd shower, the more dramatic reds and oranges represent heavier rain.
If you have nothing over you colour wise then presumably it should be dry! Those maps will keep updating as the 7th draws near so keep checking them if you like to get the most up to date info.
Cheers

Hi, is rain really forecast
Hi there Keep an eye on our
Hi there
Keep an eye on our Auckland forecasts for weather coming up regarding Auckland.
I'm sure there will be a few dry periods within the next 2 weeks.
As for early December, fronts look to be barreling through from time to time over the next week or so. The weather is coming from the west so Auckland cops it at times, unlike Canterbury and other eastern regions which have mountain ranges to the west to help block wet weather.
Beyond that we'll have to wait and see, I deal with mainly the next 5 days. Can do 10 days but starts to get a little unreliable.
Cheers

Southern Ocean storm
Hi there, thanks for the
Hi there, thanks for the feedback and question :) Dunedin is affected by it to some degree but the airflow will mean the Southern Alps absorbs a lot of the hit. Gales possible for a time but looking mostly dry. The bulk of the rain will be on the West Coast.

Re/Met service .
Hi there It's a watch, so
Hi there
It's a watch, so it's a "watch, wait and see" approach. It's a forecast as to what could happen, you won't see any thunderstorms on radar right now but keep an eye on things mid to late afternoon. Isolated showers have started to develop about inland ranges / hills of BOP. Thunderstorms do look possible for inland parts of the North Island today and these types of thunderstorms can lead to very heavy downpours so it's a good move to keep the public up to date with what could be coming up this afternoon. When things are cracking and a storm is happening, if it meets warning criteria then it can be upgraded to a warning about where it's going etc. You might be getting the terms confused a little but that's all good. An outlook is the first step, watch the second and then warning the final step in regards to thunderstorms. The first two are still forecasts in their purest sense then a warning is when things are actually happening.
As for the showers this morning not sure there, I've got it wrong at times that's for sure so won't be casting any stones that's for sure! lol. We are all trying to do our best.
Keep an eye on thunderstorm potential for inland parts of the North Island today, could be exciting! Hopefully not to detrimental to many.
Cheers
Aaron

Hastings weather
I agree
Hi there, you're not the only
Hi there, you're not the only one having issues with the new MetService site so welcome along to WeatherWatch :)
We have quite a few Hastings observations (click the image to load our observations page).

As for historical - the NZ Government blocks open data (in other words, MetService and Niwa take all our taxes, build weather stations with it for their own profits, then block any of the taxpayers from openly using that data they originally paid for. (no other country on earth does it this way). So it means we have limited historical data...FOR NOW. We are working with IBM to change this - and the Commerce Commission is now investigating this bad behaviour from MetService and Niwa, so we hope to be able to share more data NZers have already paid for in the near future. They are holding on to the data because they cannot compete with ideas and innovation - it's a way to hold us back.
Cheers

Good morning and thanks very
Good morning and thanks very much for giving us a go. It's the third time in a decade MetSerivce has spent millions revamping their look. At first we used to complain about what a waste of public money that was - now we enjoy gaining new followers from their changes :) Glad to have your support!!
Cheers
