thunderstorms

metservice has us in the moderate risk tommorow for thunderstorms, will there be some? juat ASKING.

A chance definitely exisits,

A chance definitely exisits, mainly in the afternoon. It's a really hit and miss situation so you may or may not. Apologies we can't be any more exact.

WW

oh yep thanks

thanks theres a lot of lightning at northland at the moment. so . and trees have blown down from the wind.

Rotorua

Thinking of popping down to Rotorua on Saturday for some mountain biking - is there likely to be much rain on Friday and Saturday do you think?

Hi there Looks showery on

Hi there

Looks showery on Friday, dry spells may start to increase from late afternoon on Friday. Saturday looks drier, a mix of sun and cloud with southwesterly winds, later in the evening showers or some rain develops.

Keep up to date here: https://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/location/Rotorua

Data included in the forecast

Hi there, I've always admired the accuracy of your forecast, but find myself always having to look at Metservice afterwards. This is because while it is one thing to know the probability of rain at any given time of day, it is equally important to know how much of it is likely. E.g. 90% probability of 0.2mm precipitation is far less significant for being outdoors than a 50% chance of a 6mm downpour! Is this something you can/are likely to include in your forecasts? Cheers

Hi there, thanks for the

Hi there, thanks for the comment and yes we are working towards having more rainfall data appear in our forecasts. You may like our new website: www.RuralWeather.co.nz which has fantastic visual rainfall graphs and hourly amounts too. We hope to add more bells and whistles in 2020 :)

Thanks for the reponse

Nice one, thank you. Even just a qualitative description of how much rain is to be expected will be a great start. Cheers.

SSW event

I keep hearing the SSW event above Antarctica being referred to as the "Beast from the East". Do you know why that name is used for it? Surely any impact on our weather will be from the South or West? Is it just another example of our media using terminology from overseas events that isn't really relevant to us?

Hi there, yes good question!

Hi there, yes good question! Newshub has just published this story with our views on it - you'll find it interesting I think, definitely Niwa are seeking click bait with that "beast from the east" nonsense:  www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2019/08/sudden-stratospheric-warming-forecaster-rubbishes-predictions-nz-will-be-hit-by-polar-blast.html

Low pressure system

Hi there, I wonder how much rain we will get from the low pressure system next week Wednesday

This map here

This map here http://wxmaps.org/pix/prec7 (the one at the bottom) suggests most of the North Island will have average rainfall for the next 10 days but parts of the east coast, Coromandel / Waikato / southern Auckland and perhaps northern Northland will be just over average.

So there you go..... As for actual specifics that depends exactly where you are.

Hope the above helps.

springtime in Dunedin

Hi WW team Would you have a rough guess on when the nighttime lows in Dunedin will reach at least a consistant 10?? I'm a bit over single digit lows. Even a rough guess from WW is more accurate than where our taxes go to. Cheers Indy

Hi Indy, great question and

Hi Indy, great question and you have a little longer to go just yet. We are seeing overnight lows creep up in Dunedin just a little bit, bit 7 degrees looks fairly normal in the week ahead, but cooler winds end of next week and next weekend will likely drop them back down into the lower single digits. Typically the windier westerlies later in September tend to push your lows into double digits more often. Good luck!

Cheers

Phil D

By the way, you see see temperature trends, including the 'feels like' temperatures, for Dunedin for the next 10 days here in our new weather data page: www.weatherwatch.co.nz/rural/Dunedin

Hi, I was wondering if you know when is the windy season in Otorohanga to fly kites? Regards, Kieng

Hi there Kieng, we're

Hi there Kieng, we're basically heading into that perfect windy season right now! This weekend won't be so good though with a lot of high pressure - same with early next week. But later next week, next weekend and likely the several weeks following should see a number of windy days. Have fun!

Good morning, we've placed a block on this site so hopefully a nearby one is showing up for you now (or soon). If not, please do let us know. Also, a side note, we're also aware of a glitch with the times of updating in some weather station at the moment and IBM are already working on this.

Cheers!

Hamilton weather site current temps not working

Hi, just letting you know the Hamilton current temperature reading has not been showing a reading for a few days now. Thanks

Thanks for this. On our

Thanks for this. On our observations page we can see it's missing, but just wondering if the website is showing you a specific Station ID that we can search deeper into?

Thanks a lot for letting us know - with hundreds of live stations across NZ there is always one that is giving us some work to sort - the positive is that we often have a nearby one we can switch to :)

best forecasters ever

you guys are the best fore casters ever. The stratospheric warming they forecasting Im not taking that seriously. i think your forecast is the right one. keep up the good work.

Hi there, thanks for the

Hi there, thanks for the support :) To be clear we aren't saying it isn't happening, we're saying there is currently no direct link to NZ's weather forecast that matches any of the big headlines and comments we've seen elsewhere! For now spring is looking very ...springy!  Cheers, WW

What is this stratospheric

What is this stratospheric warming?? Is it something to be worried about?

Hi there, the news coverage

Hi there, the news coverage of this event has been quite confusing - this is one of the problems when we have two government forecasters now competing against each other to be in the news. Basically it's a significant event in Antarctica that can lead to some polar outbreaks over the Southern Ocean and potentially beyond. At this stage there is no polar blast forecast for NZ though, but we do expect the usual spring chaos (mild sunny days mixed in with some cold wet, wintry days) as we go into September.  The coverage has been a bit over the top as many news outlets made it sound like a major winter blast was coming but Niwa hasn't given any specific winter forecast for any regions. People should always be concerned about spring weather patterns, but so far nothing to be specifically worried about. Keep up to date with our news website, if anything major is on the horizon we usually give a good week or two warning - along with our 10 day forecasts. :)

Cheers

WW

PS. In NZ the official Government forecast agency is MetService, not Niwa.

Weather station location

Hi, where's your weather station for Whangarei located? Scott.

Hey Scott, it depends on

Hey Scott, it depends on where you are! We have quite a few around Whangarei. You'll find your Current/NOW temperature should have a Station ID next to it, if there's any problems with it just quote us that Station ID and we can look into it, or block it.  Check here: https://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/observations

Weather Station Location

I'm checking the drift on my barometer attached to my Lung function testing device. Usually clings to your reading, lately moved away. Your readings are great.

Four digit numbers

Hi WW I've noticed when Philip is reading the weather forecast, on the map you can see the isobars as solid lines with the air pressure nicely indicated, but there are some other lines appearing as dashes which have four digit numbers begging with 5. Love to know what's happening there thanks

G'day thereThey are

G'day there

They are thickness lines. It literally means what it says, it represents the thickness of the atmosphere. In most cases and in these maps with Phil it's between the 1000mb and 500mb level, these levels do fluctuate. When the atmosphere is warm the thickness is often greater in value, when it's very cold it's lower in value.

Here's some more info: www.weather.gov/jetstream/thickness

Hope that helps!

Cheers

Wind

Will the wind die down today for my bike ride?

Hi there, take a look at our

Hi there, take a look at our special hourly forecasts it will show you the wind speed and if it's going up or down. Generally we're expecting winds to pick up a little further this afternoon, then easing back a little this evening.

Cheers and all the best for the bike ride!

WW

Polar spring

What is this rare polar event met service is telling us about that might create a cold spring for september 2019?

Hi there, we don't closely

Hi there, we don't closely monitor their long range forecasts as they are often unhelpful. We do know we have some changes south of NZ affecting our pattern right now (why we are getting more lows and SW winds) but nothing yet jumping out as any major polar changes. In fact even with a southerly change coming in tonight both Friday and Saturday afternoons still look warmer than average in many parts of NZ.

Cheers

WW

hail

does the hail risk ease this afternoon cause in tonight it says hail again.

Hi there, no we have removed

Hi there, no we have removed that now. For a time we wondered if a little surge of heavy showers might come in with the southerly but that doesn't look likely now.

Cheers,

WW

I love thunder :D

so do i

so do i. we are in for a thundary night tonight by the looks of things.

Hi there, not looking too

Hi there, not looking too active at the moment. A few isolated thunderstorms around though. We're not forecasting them as much as others are. Keep an eye on the lightning tracker though :)

Cheers
WW

I am

I am as I know the risk is for the whole night. metservice even has a severe thunderstorm watch.

Me too

I love them also, but WW was right for last night. Hopefully better odds Fri arvo/evening!

Board trip

Hey guys, we’re wondering what the weather will be like for our board trip flight in tomorrow?! Thanks!

Hi there I'm not sure where

Hi there

I'm not sure where you are talking about. One bit of advise I can give is if it's not safe to fly they won't put you in the air so there you go :D

thunderstorms

are we going o have thunderstorms and hail in auckland tommorow cause thats what metservice is forecasting.

Hi there, yes we have a risk

Hi there, yes we have a risk of thunder and hail. Our latest weather video which will be up later this morning explains the risks. We also have special maps on our homepage news section right now showing the thunderstorm risks for the next few days ahead.
