Watching the rain radar all

Watching the rain radar all weekend Auckland was very close to having a wet past few days - we can thank the ranges to our north and east for stopping most of the rain!

Any inkling when sunny skies would be back again?

Hi,
After two weeks of wet weather I'm longing for good sunny days. Do you see any on the horizon? Thanks

today was pretty darned nice!

When is this bloody annoying

When is this bloody annoying rain going to leave? I have had enough of it I think we all have . The car hasn't been washed for weeks and its brown now lol this has to be the most crappiest weather I have ever seen

We have another low coming in

We have another low coming in this week (leave the car outside in the rain!) then possibly another behind it.  We're hoping that drier weather will move in towards week 3 of August - but only early days at this stage!

Outdoor Location shoot

Sunday 12 Aug - how does it look. Is it sunny, rain, cloudy or what? Have an outdoor film shoot :( Anyone can predict!!!

HI there - a bit too early to

HI there - a bit too early to know for sure, so feel free to ask again in a few days time.  In the meantime, click on the Maps link at the top of the page to see what the current models are predicting rainwise for you.

Weather forecast

Hi, any idea what the weather patterns are going to be like for August, September and October? We are trying to plan some outdoor works, and need decent dry spells to carry out the works.

All indicators are pointing

All indicators are pointing towards El Nino - which tends to bring windier, drier, weather to Auckland - coupled with spring that further increases the chances of westerlies and less of these nor'easters.  We don't really have a lot of faith in forecasts beyond a month unless we have a strong weather pattern, which we dont at the moment, so for now we're predicting an increase in westerlies for the second half of August,

Cheers

last night

Philip those few showers last night got together and had children. Consistent rain here in West Auckland from 7 p.m. till 3 a.m., some of it quite heavy.
Do you think the volume of precipitation we have experienced over the last few days is likely to increase or decrease over the next few days? The ground must be totally saturated
Cheers Bill

What a great way of

What a great way of describing it!  That's certainly what it felt like...a few showers which then spread and turned to rain.  Very odd weather pattern with these constant bands of showers and rain (and some of those showers, like last night, can catch up with each other and turn to rain) moving in from the north.  Id imagine that it will decrease on Friday but high risk again on Saturday for more rain, and 60% risk for Sunday.  Hard to know if it will be as intense...certainly has the potential but will come down to the luck of the draw on the day as to where the rain clouds organise themselves.  For example last nights heavy rain formed over northern Auckland then shifted south... a little further north it was mostly dry.

TVNZ has Auckland overnight

TVNZ has Auckland overnight as 4c,the herald as 11,metservice 10.The 4c is even lower than Hamiltons 6.

That seems weird as TVNZ and

That seems weird as TVNZ and the Herald both use MetService data - so either MetService has different feeds for them or they update at different times.  All the mainstream media in NZ use MetService at this stage for their daily forecasts (although more and more are trusting us, which is evident through our Herald videos and quotes in news stories).  No other western nation in the world has a weather monopoly like NZ does with MetService, which is why we're working with the authorities and the Commerce Commission to right this wrong.

We have 9 as the low tonight.  It's been a funny week because if we have a prolonged clear spell in between the rain clouds the temperature could drop to 6...but if the winds and clouds/rain remain, it may hover around 12.  Quite a big difference and 100% dependent on the timing of those clouds/showers and clear spells.

That train always arrives

That train always arrives right on 2.55pm. When thousands of parents are standing outside classrooms waiting for their little darlings.

Is there a light (or sun) at the end of this 'trainy' tunnel? And just how long will we have to wait for the sun to shine again?

Yeah isn't it odd this is one

Yeah isn't it odd this is one train that always runs on time!?  There is some light at the end of the tunnel - but possibly not for another week I'm afraid

awesome so what time's this train due? Calling all stations?

Haha, that can sometimes

Haha, that can sometimes be the problem with a typo that's spelt correctly - it doesnt get caught up in the spell check.

The "train" should be arriving this afternoon at Platform Auckland.

Auckland

Hi there what do you think the weather will be like tomorrow in Auckland at around 12-1:30pm? Is it possible the weather will affect any incoming international flights at the Auckland airport? Thanks :)

Hi there - no the weather

Hi there - no the weather shouldn't have any significant impact on international flights tomorrow.  It will be cloudy with showers and rain developing, brisk to gusty winds.  Nothing that should cause any flight problems for international jets.

raining in dairy flat

we've got the same problem here in dairy flat,we've been having rain showers every 5 ro 10 mins all morning, but it looks like its starting to get a bit better now

Whats with the rain?

Just checked your forecast went out - took the covers off my horses then 20 mins ago it started raining - so had to put them all back on - now I'm soaked!
I'm in Coatesville which isn't as far north as Torbay.

Just a couple very brief

Just a couple very brief showers from Northland and Coromandel clipped you.  Dry over the rest of the city.  Still looking mostly dry today,

Auckland weather on 11,12 and13th August.

Hi we are five of us from India visiting Auckland between 11th and 13 th of august. Can you tell us the likely weather in terms of min and max temp likelihood of rain and winds during that period? Also can you give us a rough idea of similar conditions in Rotorua, Quuenstown, Franz Josef and Christchurch, between the 13tn and 18th of August.
Thank you.

 Hi there, the weather during

Hi there, the weather during August can be very changeable as August is the depth of winter for us, although some areas start to become a bit more spring-like.  Snow is possible in Queenstown, heavy rain possible in Franz Josef and the other centres can have a mixture of weather.  Be prepared for overnight lows down to -5 and daytime highs as much as 18 degrees - and everything in between!  The highest temp most days, though, would be between 12 and 15 on average,

Cheers

WW

This Evening?

Why does your 'this evening' field say 'max'? Surely this is 'min'?

We are changing that to Min

We are changing that to Min in the coming months... but it was part of a trial to focus on the most likely temperature across the city for the evening, rather than the lowest (as often somewhere like Henderson will be 4 degrees while 80% of the city is around 7 or 8, for example.

Rain

Torrential rain flooded our driveway in Whitford, water pouring through retaining walls. Got within a metre of the house before easing. Just started again but not as heavy. Worst downpour for a few weeks.

Unlucky 50%

We must be in the unlucky 50% here in East Tamaki where if it rains any harder I might be tempted to drop my pen and pick up a hammer and some nails to build an Ark if I'm to get home tonight!

Weather forecast for thursday 26/07

HI again.......could i be a pain and ask you to please tell me how it will be in south auckland?? Thanks and keep safe!!

Good morning :) No different

Good morning :)

No different to the forecast above, although any shower activity looks likely to clear South Auckland first.   Use our interactive rain maps (you can zoom in and use the mouse to move the map) to track where the rain bands will be tomorrow.  http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/maps

Weather forecast for thursday 26/07

Thanks for your tremendous work and efforts. If i google weather forecast for this week, some places it shows as thursday (26/07) being a sunny day and another it says thunderstorms.......can you please clarify??

Hi there, and thanks very

Hi there, and thanks very much, really appreciate that .  On Thursday we'll have a fresher south east wind blow through - so a cooler change mixing with some warmer air could produce some offshore thunderstorms.  I imagine the other forecasts you're seeing through google are international models that are detecting those thunderstorms but not fine tuning the forecasts enough for Auckland city.  There will be a band of quite heavy rain or showers passing by the city in the morning according to our models - so we'll be closely monitoring the updates to see how the computers feel about that area of showers.

Cheers, Phil

Fog?

Hi Weatherwatch,

Is this a different type of fog that we are experiencing compared to what Auckland had roughly two weeks ago? For instance, the climate in Auckland is a lot warmer and this fog we are having now has precipitation mixed in with it, but are they both been formed the same way??

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul Actually this fog is

Hi Paul

Actually this fog is being generated in exactly the same way! - very high humidity, high dewpoints (basically at the point where clouds form at ground level) and all in the centre of a large low.   In fact we're kicking ourselves for not having fog in the forecast as we were expecting it in Auckland and told one authority yesterday but failed to put it in our forecast yesterday for today - so apologies to our readers for that.  Was an oversight with so much focus on the heavy rain to the east and south of Auckland.

Basically the air is so saturated that we're seeing clouds forming (and rain drops forming) right down at ground level (that's why the rain is so fine/light).  However slightly heavier showers are expected this afternoon.

The fog we're more used to in the upper North Island is usually caused by large highs when the wind is calm.  But these lows over the past month have been huge - the same size as some highs - so the centres are very weak with very little wind.  Exactly what we're seeing today - and may see again next week (although the next big low is predicted to cross the South Island and not the upper North Island).

Cheers

Philip Duncan

Thanks Phil

Interesting to note that the amount of fog Auckland is having this winter, correct me if I’m wrong, but on average Auckland usually has three really thick foggy days durring winter…

Definitely been more than

Definitely been more than usual this year - you're quite right, normally only a few foggy mornings - we've had about 6 or 7 now.

Have a story tomorrow morning around 7am about Auckland's recent fog

Metservice are always full of

Metservice are always full of crap I would never believe their inaccurate forecasts

Metservice

How come sometimes your forecast differs from metservice. Like for thursday, july 26 you say here sunny day while metservice forecasts showers showing two raindrops and no sun in the icon. sometimes it is just confusing which one to follow. does your data come from different sources?

Different sources, different forecasters

Predicting the weather is not an exact science.  If it was a simple as applying the rules of physics, every forecast would be 100% accurate.

But you have to do deal with the factor of time as well.  Where is a particular weather maker going to be at a particular time.  What will that system look like.  Will it have the same amount of moisture to work with when it gets here, will it have the same amount of energy, etc

Every forecaster uses their education and experience when they look at the data to make up a forecast.  And yes, our data does come from different sources.

As far as which one to follow, well that's up to you.  You have to determine which of us is more accurate and more effective in providing the information you want.  It's just like us when we forecast.  We learn over time which model is more accurate and go with that one.

Cheers
Howard

Thanks. I do like that you

Thanks. I do like that you break up your forecast for the day in three periods given the crazy Auckland weather.

cheers

11 tonight sounds a little

11 tonight sounds a little too high, though quite cloudy the movement is still SW and no surface wind as well, maybe it will drop say to 6-7c then rise in the early hours.

 Yep, agree - we were

Yep, agree - we were counting on that wind to pick up a little more but it didnt quite get there, so warmer than last night but not as warm as earlier predicted...half way!

- WW

Too cloudy tomorrow night??

Have booked to go to Auck Observatory tomorrow night (Friday). There is opportunity to look through telescope after the presentation but only if it's not too cloudy. What are your thoughts, too cloudy tomorrow night or do we have a reasonable chance??

Hi there, at this stage

Hi there, at this stage passing clouds moving in a breezy nor'easter.  Cloudier weather moves in on Saturday so hopefully you'll be ok for Friday evening... 75% chance of clear spells tomorrow night.

Cheers

WW

Fog in Akl tomorrow?

Hi please you you tell me chances of fog in Akl tomorrow a.m. We are flying into Akl at 7.50 on way overseas.....
Thanks

At this stage we aren't

At this stage we aren't expecting fog tomorrow thanks to an east to north east wind which will be building.  Check our site again this evening for our latest update but at this stage it's not in the forecast.

Kind regards

west, south, north & east auckland?

Cheers for having this website, but is it possible to have the different areas in Auckland.
As in West Ak, North of the bridge, south Ak and those out East.

Auckland covers a huge area. It maybe raining out south and be sunny in West Ak and visa versa etc etc. but the Auckland coverage data doesn't say that...

cheers.
