hi there, I came here just to see if there was any article or if the question has been asked already…? but just very curious to learn why the weather in the upper North island has become so incredibly HOT all of a sudden???

Hi Paul, High pressure north of NZ is pulling down subtropical air from around New Caledonia/southern Vanuatu and the Coral Sea area. The placement of that high is helping drag down that humid summer-like air. This should ease back in the coming days/nights. It’s been well above average/normal for parts of NZ over the past week due to these airflows.
Cheers,
Phil D

Wow, the rain and the wind were so strong yesterday in Auckland. I just watched the board on our fences fly from the strength of the wind. Downpours were incredibly strong as well.

hey phil. that was a active night in Auckland. thunder/lightning and heavy rain/downpours. snow in Canterbury from the sounds of it. when will this active relentless pattern end?
are we in for a late summer?

Hey Josh, our ClimateWatch video is out on Friday and we expect to see some spring pattern continuing on into December. Will have a better idea end of the week (and going into mid November).

Hey the station IHASTI143 always seems to have highly inaccurate wind readings. Is it in a sheltered spot?

Hi Chris, often the town/city locations don’t have good wind data due to fences, buildings or simply the station not set in a good location. We’re working with MetService to get better wind and rainfall observations from the data already owned by the NZ Government and hope to be able to display that later in 2026.
