Confusing and conflicting predictions

In the midst of the hotter spell, it seems that every weather site predicts slightly different highs and lows. I guess some of this is due to some sites being offshore and therefore their data may be less accurate? I know we're hot here, based on my very scientific approach in gauging my own energy levels ( ha ha). Which site, in your opinion gives the most accurate and up to date information? An example of this confusion is that today's predictions for Kawerau are saying cloudy. Hmm, not really happening. Thank you for any comment you may have on this. I follow this site the most as your answers to people's queries are easily understood.

Hi there, we all use similar

Hi there, we all use similar data but we all crunch it in different ways and some are more accurate and others are less so. However all forecasters say they are the most accurate just like all restaurants say they have the best food, so it's really down to the public to work out which one disappoints them the least. :) I don't know which website/forecaster you're looking at but we're forecasting Mostly Sunny for Kawerau today: hwww.weatherwatch.co.nz/location/Kawerau. As of 4:28pm It's currently 30 degrees, 1 degree above our forecast high of 29. So perhaps just try using us :)

Cheers and all the best,
Phil D

Thanks for the comments Phil.

Thanks for the comments Phil. If you guys locate any rain clouds out there, send them our way overnight. Much appreciated.

what is the heat for the rest of the heat wave

is going to be hot for Auckland for the rest of the heatwave?

Feel free to check out our

Feel free to check out our Auckland forecasts, there you will see daytime highs for the next 10 days :)

Cheers
Aaron

ok

OK I saw your latest video. the heat wave will go away on Friday and a front may come through. is that right?

Hi there, yes for the most

Hi there, yes for the most part - especially the further south you live. Friday cools down in the south (some by over 12 degrees!), the lower North Island cools down on Saturday (Hawke's Bay will probably notice it the most with an over 15 degree drop for some compared to Monday this week!), then those in the upper half of the North Island cool down just a couple or few degrees on either Saturday or Sunday. Nothing major but should be a little less stifling.

bottom lighning tracker

bottom lightning tracker says that there has been lightning strikes around east and south Auckland. will this effect Pakuranga? I hear low rumbles of thunder.

Don't think there has been

Don't think there has been any lightning / thunderstorms near Auckland tonight, must have been something else you heard perhaps?

Cheers

hearing thunder

I am in Pakuranga Auckland and I have been hearing low rumbles of thunder and I checked on the lightning tracker and the bottom one said 11 strikes south east of Auckland. could that be hitting Auckland? are heat waves nateral disasters? when will this heat wave last for?

Hi there Don't think there

Hi there

Don't think there has been any lightning / storms near Auckland tonight, must be something else?

If a heatwave was long enough perhaps it could turn it something serious.

waitangi day

will it be raining on Waitangi day? or sunny?

It may be fairly dry across

It may be fairly dry across New Zealand then, but depending where you are there could be the chance of a few showers.

hastings coolest temp was 33 oC

Hastings was 33oC . Tutira was 41oC . both are inland. I presume this is day one of the hot spell . how high is danger ?

Hi there, we don't think 41C

Hi there, we don't think 41C sounds accurate based on readings we saw all over Hawke's Bay and Central Plateau today. MetService insists 35 was the high we believe 37 (and we saw many much higher but believe they weren't calibrated properly, it just wasn't the set up for the North Island to hit 41).

Hastings went over 33, we had 34 there and 35 in Havlock North and 37 in Taradale. MetService reported 36 on their site but didn't include in their overall public figures for some reason. NIWA will have another set of temperatures too by the way, as they now compete commercial against MetService and therefore don't use the same database - NZ the only country on earth to have two official weather records! #Confusing.

tutira. waikoau rd. hawke's bay

recorded as on facebook also 41oC . reliable source.

Chch

Excuse the ignorance..but how can there be 47% chance of rain..and it's 32° here.. explain please..thanks

Hi there, that's a fair

Hi there, that's a fair question! It's due to the rain falling near the western boundary of Canterbury over on the West Coast. There was a fair bit of humidity around Christchurch this morning so had the heat not kicked in there was a chance of maybe some drizzle or a spit or two. With the heat and sun now out that looks less likely, but humidity levels are around 50% which isn't super dry for Canterbury.

Hope that helps :)

we getting light rain

its light rain in Auckland at the moment. when will it clear up for it being Auckland anniversary. these cloudy days are blocking the heatwave.

Hi there, see the story we've

Hi there, see the story we've just put up on the homepage about Auckland. There's also a little bit of drizzle this morning due to the thick cloud cover and warm humid conditions. Hopefully a few sunny spells develop today. Tomorrow looks warmer by a few degrees too. Auckland isn't normally impacted by heatwaves unless there is a big nor'west wind flow from the Australian desert straight to here - which isn't the set up this week. There's too much coastal water around Auckland to let it heat up like other parts of the country.

Cheers

lightning bottom of sth island

I checked the lightning tracker and it shows that there has been lightning striking to the west to the bottom of the south island will that hit? will it block heat wave

Well the West Coast of the

Well the West Coast of the South Island may well get some lightning, and perhaps some inland North Island areas south of Auckland mid week. But Auckland itself is not looking very lightning active coming up.

The West Coast of the South Island won't be as hot, still looking hot for eastern parts of the country this coming week.

Cheers
Aaron

will the be some?

but is there gonna be thunderstorms for Auckland ?

Hi Ah I just indicated above

Hi

Ah I just indicated above that lightning (meaning thunderstorms) is not looking very likely for Auckland this coming week.

Hope that helps! :)

Aaron

thanks

ok thanks I just wanted to know. since school is starting back up.

heatwave

is there a heatwave coming? how hot is it for east Auckland

Temperatures in Auckland are

Temperatures in Auckland are often moderated a bit by the surrounding bodies of water either side despite heatwaves etc, in saying that high's are looking to mostly be in the mid twenties this coming week for Auckland, perhaps high twenties on Tuesday.

Cheers
Aaron

Hi I live

Hi I live in glen eden in auckland just wodering what temps are we going to get nextweek due to the heatwave

Hi there, you can search for

Hi there, you can search for Glen Eden specifically on the homepage but at this stage probably 25 to 29 degrees generally. The heatwave will be felt mostly inland over the country and to the east but some inland parts of Auckland wll be closer to 30 degrees mid week including the Glen Eden area.

Cheers

WW

I've noticed you guys say

I've noticed you guys say this a few times (searching for a suburb in Auckland on the homepage) but when you do this, it takes you straight to the Auckland page. The only difference being it says 'Glen Eden (or whatever suburb you search) weather' at the top. apart from that, everything else is exactly the same as the Auckland page.

THe hourly forecasts and the

THe hourly forecasts and the current forecasts (the ones from The Weather Company) they are specific to your area. We write a generic Auckland forecast as it's the most accurate and takes into account most of the main microclimates - we're the only forecaster to do this. The hourly data is specific to your suburb though.

Is west auckland

Is west Auckland going to be hot maybe like 30degress

Good afternoon, On Tuesday

Good afternoon,

On Tuesday and Wednesday there is a chance some parts of Auckland will reach the late 20s and possibly 30, however with coastal sea breezes they can knock the temperature back by several degrees. Henderson and Henderson Valley are most likely to be the hottest parts of Henderson being lower down and further inland. It looks like southern rural Auckland is most likely to reach closest to 30 next week.

Cheers

WW

When can we expect an actual

When can we expect an actual summer in Auckland? These 22 degree highs with cold SW wind are disappointing.

Next week is hotter with

Next week is hotter with highs in the late 20s possible inland and mid 20s in coastal areas. For Auckland to be really hot in summer you need either a light Sou'Easter or a brisk north to north west wind. These directions don't look so common at the moment sadly.

mid February temp

cruising east coast of NZ what might the weather be?

Hey there, it will depend on

Hey there, it will depend on the specific weather set up at the time (as we saw this week the east coast has had both temps in the early 30s and temps in the teens!). Generally speaking eastern NZ in mid Feb is very sunny and settled but we can't be sure this far out. Check the weather maps and forecasts within 10 days of going and you'll get a much more accurate idea. All the best and have a great time on the cruise :)

Typical Dunedin

Hello WW Crew. From the looks of the long range forecast for Dunedin for next week, it looks like the heatwave will totally bypass us. Teens and a 20 or two. Why is that?? I know you can't do a thing about it, but little heat would be appreciated. No joke, some of us had the heaters on yesterday. LOL Thanking you Indy NB: For those getting the heatwave, come to Dunedin for a cool off and some great sights.

Hi there, yes Dunedin is just

Hi there, yes Dunedin is just a little too far south for this heatwave as the stream of warm air from Aussie and the sub-tropics is fairly narrow. If it makes you feel better Auckland in the north will also be missing some of this heat too :) The cold snap you had on Thursday was definitely not your normal mid-summer weather and the good news is that we do see more settled, warmer, weather coming your way as we end January and go into February. Hopefully Feb will be a bit hotter for you! All the best Indy :)
Cheers

Phil D

Hi Phil As someone who

Hi Phil As someone who doesn't particularly like hot weather I'm glad that you say Auckland may miss some of the heatwave. However, MetService is forecasting temps of nearly 30C for Auckland next week, several degrees hotter than what WW is currently predicting. Do you think they are overestimating the temps? Cheers, DJ.

Hi DJ, there is a good chance

Hi DJ, there is a good chance some parts of inland and rural Auckland will be similar to Waikato (so yes, late 20s and even 30 possible). But many suburbs that are coastal will be cooler. I think our forecast highs may creep up a degree or two but generally Auckland isn't quite so hot as other regions (but it will still feel hot to those who don't like hot weather!).

Cheers

rainfall January 2019 Marlborough sounds

Hi - I was wanting to know if there has been any rainfall in the Marlborough Sounds (Endeavour Inlet) since 1 January 2019. We gather rain water as our water source at our bach. Our tank was very low at Christmas and if there has not been any rain, we may need to bring water with us. Thanks Jayne

Hi Jayne, you'll need to

Hi Jayne, you'll need to contact MetService or NIWA for rainfall figures as even though us Kiwis tax fund this system, we can't then actually share that tax owned data without paying a significantly astronomical fee to do so. However we can tell you forecast-wise, at no charge :), that rainfall in your area looks below average for the next week or two ahead, in fact it may be very dry. Sorry I know that's not the answer you're probably wanting - here's hoping for a rain maker from the north in mid to late Feb. Hope that is of some help to your decision making.

All the very best,
Phil D

Long-term forecast for Feb

Hi WW team, Do you have a long-term forecast for February for Auckland? We have not had much rain recently so is that trend likely to continue?Any massive highs coming our way over the next month? Or any 'weather bombs'? Thanks, Simon

Morning Simon, cheers for the

Morning Simon, cheers for the questions.

At this stage we see no significant change in this pattern - meaning February looks drier than average for Auckland unless we get a tropical/subtropical rainmaker. The tropics don't look active north of NZ until mid-Feb while the series of big highs from Aussie look set to continue. Perhaps in mid Feb there is a chance these highs could sink further south (which Southland, Otago and the West Coast would like) and this might see a shift to more easterlies in northern NZ. Drier than normal for the next week or two ahead. No storms at this stage but maybe a cyclone near Vanuatu in two weeks time.

Cheers
Phil D

Thanks Phil, much appreciated

thunderstorms

I want to know if Auckland is going to be hit by the front that hit the south island today? plus thunderstorms?

It will move onto Auckland

It will move onto Auckland today but in a much more weakened state compared to what it was like over the South Island, there will probably be no thunderstorms.
