mid February temp

cruising east coast of NZ what might the weather be?

Hey there, it will depend on

Hey there, it will depend on the specific weather set up at the time (as we saw this week the east coast has had both temps in the early 30s and temps in the teens!). Generally speaking eastern NZ in mid Feb is very sunny and settled but we can't be sure this far out. Check the weather maps and forecasts within 10 days of going and you'll get a much more accurate idea. All the best and have a great time on the cruise :)

Typical Dunedin

Hello WW Crew. From the looks of the long range forecast for Dunedin for next week, it looks like the heatwave will totally bypass us. Teens and a 20 or two. Why is that?? I know you can't do a thing about it, but little heat would be appreciated. No joke, some of us had the heaters on yesterday. LOL Thanking you Indy NB: For those getting the heatwave, come to Dunedin for a cool off and some great sights.

Hi there, yes Dunedin is just

Hi there, yes Dunedin is just a little too far south for this heatwave as the stream of warm air from Aussie and the sub-tropics is fairly narrow. If it makes you feel better Auckland in the north will also be missing some of this heat too :) The cold snap you had on Thursday was definitely not your normal mid-summer weather and the good news is that we do see more settled, warmer, weather coming your way as we end January and go into February. Hopefully Feb will be a bit hotter for you! All the best Indy :)
Cheers

Phil D

Hi Phil As someone who

Hi Phil As someone who doesn't particularly like hot weather I'm glad that you say Auckland may miss some of the heatwave. However, MetService is forecasting temps of nearly 30C for Auckland next week, several degrees hotter than what WW is currently predicting. Do you think they are overestimating the temps? Cheers, DJ.

Hi DJ, there is a good chance

Hi DJ, there is a good chance some parts of inland and rural Auckland will be similar to Waikato (so yes, late 20s and even 30 possible). But many suburbs that are coastal will be cooler. I think our forecast highs may creep up a degree or two but generally Auckland isn't quite so hot as other regions (but it will still feel hot to those who don't like hot weather!).

Cheers

rainfall January 2019 Marlborough sounds

Hi - I was wanting to know if there has been any rainfall in the Marlborough Sounds (Endeavour Inlet) since 1 January 2019. We gather rain water as our water source at our bach. Our tank was very low at Christmas and if there has not been any rain, we may need to bring water with us. Thanks Jayne

Hi Jayne, you'll need to

Hi Jayne, you'll need to contact MetService or NIWA for rainfall figures as even though us Kiwis tax fund this system, we can't then actually share that tax owned data without paying a significantly astronomical fee to do so. However we can tell you forecast-wise, at no charge :), that rainfall in your area looks below average for the next week or two ahead, in fact it may be very dry. Sorry I know that's not the answer you're probably wanting - here's hoping for a rain maker from the north in mid to late Feb. Hope that is of some help to your decision making.

All the very best,
Phil D

Long-term forecast for Feb

Hi WW team, Do you have a long-term forecast for February for Auckland? We have not had much rain recently so is that trend likely to continue?Any massive highs coming our way over the next month? Or any 'weather bombs'? Thanks, Simon

Morning Simon, cheers for the

Morning Simon, cheers for the questions.

At this stage we see no significant change in this pattern - meaning February looks drier than average for Auckland unless we get a tropical/subtropical rainmaker. The tropics don't look active north of NZ until mid-Feb while the series of big highs from Aussie look set to continue. Perhaps in mid Feb there is a chance these highs could sink further south (which Southland, Otago and the West Coast would like) and this might see a shift to more easterlies in northern NZ. Drier than normal for the next week or two ahead. No storms at this stage but maybe a cyclone near Vanuatu in two weeks time.

thunderstorms

I want to know if Auckland is going to be hit by the front that hit the south island today? plus thunderstorms?

It will move onto Auckland

It will move onto Auckland today but in a much more weakened state compared to what it was like over the South Island, there will probably be no thunderstorms.

The unusual windy conditions over the last two months.Wind

Hi could you please enlighten me as to why we have had so much wind over December and January. I am puzzled as usually high pressure systems with large spaces between the isobars indicates calm conditions and instead the wind has been stronger than usual at this time of the year. And why so many South westerlies. Last year vat this time we had many North easterlies. Cheers Paul

Hey Paul, thanks for the

Hey Paul, thanks for the question and you raise a great point. Basically the Southern Ocean is quite windy and stormy at the moment. The belt of highs - the centres of them - aren't lying perfectly over NZ so we're not in that nice calm zone. Over the South Island and lower North Island today winds are very strong/gale in some areas and so these winds basically fade away the further north you go, but places like Auckland are wind tunnels for sou'westers and westerlies when the South Island has gale Nor'Westers. We have a calmer week next week and more nor'easters and nor'westers in the mix. NZ is so small that highs and lows can easily dwarf us and weather patterns around NZ are chaotic - so every year is usually different :)

Camping at Waihi Beach

Hi there we are camping this Friday- Monday at Waihi beach. Looking like showers / rain. How likely is this to affect our camping holiday ? Thanks

Guess that means it could be

Friday and the first half of Saturday may see a few showers.

Saturday afternoon conditions start to dry out a bit then Sunday and Monday look dry, have a good one! :)

any idea as to when these westerlies in Auckland will stop and we'll start having more consistently 'wind free' summer days?

Auckland wind

Hi there, just seems to be one calm warm sunny day turns into at least three windy messy cloudy/rainy days in Auckland . Any chance this will clam down over the coming “summer” months.? Or is this the new normal weather pattern going forward ? Signed Hopeful

Hey there, great question

Hey there, great question 'Hopeful' ! For the next week there are two storms in the Southern Ocean, both are bringing wind and rain to parts of the South Island and around Cook Strait. The North Island is on the outer edges of both of these storms but we're getting a little bit of the wake from it all, some extra cloud, sometimes a bit windy and perhaps a shower or two - especially on Thursday. Next week looks more settled at this stage :)

Cheers

Wedding in march

Hey mate I know this is a very long shot but is there any settled weather looking on the cards for mid feb through to early March? We have visitors over from England and are going to be away camping in the far north followed by a outdoor wedding early March.

Hi there, thanks for the

Hi there, thanks for the question but it's too early to know sorry. The current pattern certainly favours more settled weather in northern NZ and the Far North is one of the driest parts of the country right now. The tropics are pretty quiet directly north of NZ but a small low will be forming around late Jan/early Feb. As for late Feb or March itself we can't give forecasts until about 14 to 10 days out so perhaps ask us again in mid Feb.

Cheers and all the best

november and december 2018 thunderstorms

what caused those thunderstorms in December. and plus the November one that had the Canterbury tornado? apparently north Auckland had a waterspout sighted? what caused all those storms to happen. at least once or twice a week Auckland got hit. including December 14th where the storm lasted all night 10 lightning flashes at the same time. saw millions of flashes. I could not sleep.

Hi there We go through

Hi there

We go through patterns, some are quiet like we have been having recently (generalising here), some are unstable and an unstable pattern can often involve thunderstorms. More specifically what caused those storms? Thunderstorms require warm surface temperatures / humidity and relatively colder air aloft, often a trigger is involved also like converging winds. Suburb forecasts

Hi You have said below that "we have localisd forecasts for every single suburb in the city and small town within the big Auckland region" ..where do we go to get these? thanks

Hi there, if your phone isn't

Hi there, if your phone isn't automatically doing it you can type the suburb name into the search bar on the homepage or by clicking here. We overide some of the data if we think we can do better, but anything from TWC will be local (including the hourly forecasts within our WW ones). We are making improvements this year to our entire website and layout to make this a little easier to find - and to improve suburb forecasting with special lightning data and eventually rain radar too.

Cheers

Local suburbs

Cool, thanks!

Auckland regions

Hi, I like your weather information and forecasting but it would be helpful to have options for more localised information in an area the size of Auckland. How about east, west, etc. For example, I live in Titirangi in West Auckland and that has its own micro-climate. The official met service site shows the main regions of the Auckland area and Free Meteo can even show Titirangi or other suburbs. Is it possible for Weatherwatch to offer some regionalised forecasting? I would welcome your comments. many thanks. Mel

Hi Mel - great question!

Hi Mel - great question! Firstly, WeatherWatch offers FAR more forecast locations than both tax funded NIWA & MetService combined. They offer a handful, we have localisd forecasts for every single suburb in the city and small town within the big Auckland region. However, our general Auckland forecasts are more localised than the MetService "local" forecasts. For example in Kumeu's MetService forecast we have often seen references to Great Barrier Island, which is odd. In our "general" Auckland forecast we already pinpoint local suburbs like yours - on top of that we also add a local layer of live information when a major event happens, such as a severe thunderstorm and we will specifically mention your area if need be. Our hourly info in our forecasts is specific too. Watch this space in 2019 - we're stepping up our Local and Live updating even more!

Cheers :)

I just would like to point out that everyday I look at Whangarei weather I see temperatures observed at Parahaki, Riverside. This incorrect spelling of the location was corrected years ago to Parahaka which is now the correct name to use. It would be nice if you could update that change.

Rotorua

Hey Guys, Is the weather for Rotorua next week likely to be ok apart from Monday am showers? The forecast here is a forecast by the weather channel and it says rain Tues/Wed but your Tauranga forecast looks much more promising(done by you guys) ....hoping it's more aligned with that haha. :) Cheers

Hey there, Monday is the

Hey there, Monday is the wettest day over the week but most other days aren't looking very wet - but some nearby rain to the east means there is 'some chance' there may be a few spits over in Rotorua Tues/Weds. Cheers :)

Why does the forecast for

Why does the forecast for Monday say sunny but the hourly percentages say 99% chance of rain? Looks like the data is incorrect.

Hi there, we thought the rain

Hi there, we thought the rain might be earlier than dawn but that is now unlikely so we've matched (or near) the hourly data now. Afternoon looks drier but will be a front moving through in the morning. Apologies for any confusion.
