7.11pm. Leaving on ferry to Waiheke now. Pls can I have an update on the wind? Tks.

Winds generally are what we

Winds generally are what we expected - gusts in the city around 50km/h in exposed areas, but we haven't seen many of the big storm cells in the Auckland areas to reach those extreme 100km/h+ winds we also said earlier might be possible.  They are currently around the upper NI, but not Auckland. Strong westerlies this evening - hopefully not too bad for you.

Winds??

Whats the chances of the Winds raching 100Km in southauckland? tonight

Overall the winds won't be

Overall the winds won't be 100km, it's just that there may be gusty pockets of wind that could reach that speed. Much like in the forecast above. Higher risk areas are likely to be exposed places to the northwest, western coastal areas for e.g.

Where you are it may only be a low risk that winds will reach 100kph I'd say in gusts.

Cheers

Tornado

Hi
My Year one class has been watching the weather very closely and are worried about the tornado warnings. Is there an update on whether we will have one today in auckland please?????

Hi there, this front poses a

Hi there, this front poses a "moderate" risk, in our view, of creating a low level tornado.  However it doesn't take long to realise that the risk of one hitting your house isn't anywhere near as high!  Most tornados in NZ are no wider than most living rooms - keep that in mind and now imagine this front throwing one or two at our entire western coastline - the chance of it being in your region is pretty remote let alone your house. But the risks for severe weather are there - so it's a good opporunity to educate about the tornado history in NZ - that we do see a few each year causing some damage, but many more go unreported and unseen..

Rain this weekend?

Hi WW team
will there be rain this weekend in Auckland?
It is seriously needed, so I hope so.

Gardening season is upon us.

Thank you : D

Hi there Our best thoughts

Hi there

Our best thoughts are what is in the forecast above at the moment. Some rain is likely but it probably won't be a drenching. Check back as we will adjust the forecast if need be as this low pressure system gets closer.

WW

air pressure

Hello I've heard air pressure changes can bring on labor...I'm 4 days overdue and wondering what the air pressure will change too (auckland) with the forecasted rain tonight please? :)

Hi there No rain forecasted

Hi there

No rain forecasted tonight with us above, there is the low chance of a spit or two perhaps in the east but overall we are expecting a dry night.

The pressure for the most part is looking fairly constant from now around 1020hpa till later tomorrow morning when it starts to drop ending up around 1015hpa on Friday night (midnight).

Cheers

Hi there - a weak band of

Hi there - a weak band of rain is coming in tomorrow from the north east but our models show it fizzling out.  Keep an eye on our forecasts, we're updating them more often across the days and evenings as this low comes in.

Saturdays rain

Hi,
Have a golf tournament Saturday 12pm tee. Have been watching the low with interest , do you think its going to slip further south east and just skirt Auckland with showers. Metservice rain forecast is rain your rain map just showers maybe. I take yours over theres anyday.
thanks and great app as well..!!!

Saturday is a the million

Saturday is a the million dollar question - right now we believe it looks very similar to last Saturday which say spits of rain and a few showers, otherwise mostly dry across the whole day.  Keep an eye on our forecasts and the latest rain maps.  Between now and Friday evening we should be gaining more confidence as to whether we get the rain this time, or if again the winds turn SE and it mostly falls in other regions.

Cheers

SNOWING

MAY YOU PLEASE TELL ME THE CHANCE OF IT SNOWING IN AUCKLAND

JANETTE!

This year we rated Auckland

This year we rated Auckland as having about a 20% chance of snow.  Now we would put that at about 5%.   Too warm now to see snow coming up this far, keep in mind Auckland gets now about 3 times every 100 years!

Cheers

Thick fog

At 2:00:AM thick fog swirled over New Lynn. Cleared off by 4:00:AM. Now dark clouds loom about Auckland.

I THINK THE WEATHER FORCAST SHOULD CHECK PLEASE! IS IT GOING TO BE SUNNY ON FRIDAY???

Auckland Summer

Hi Team,

Just wandering what the summer forcast is looking like for Auckland this year?

I believe that is too far out

I believe that is too far out on the horizon, we have yet to get through spring before worrying about summer. For example, during early May this year not many would have predicted this warm weather we having right now in August.

Auckland weather Sunday

Hi we are in Auckland and have our house auction on Sunday, can you tell is if the weather is going to be fine?
Thanks

Be crap from saturday into

Be crap from saturday into next week,A reality check.

Looks like there may be a few

Looks like there may be a few showers about with southwesterly winds at this stage.

Foggy start

A beautiful day with sun shining well in New Lynn after a foggy start to the morning.

Auckland

Why doesnt it rain properly in Auckland anymore.

Hi there - the past few big

Hi there - the past few big rain bands have all just been a bit too far away from Auckland sadly.  This was the closest we've seen in some time but the angle of the winds tilted south east, which turned a wet easterly into a dry south easterly (as the East Cape and Coromandel ranges then absorb almost all of our rain. It's why other forecasters said it would be a lot wetter this weekend too (we thought it would be wetter but our forecasts all said mostly dry in Auckland for the weekend with showers about.  It was still drier than we thought though, because the SE change happened a little earlier than we expected.  A tiny change that can have a significant difference.  Like aiming an arrow at a dartboard - if you tilt it by just a few degrees it will completely miss the target. That's what happened in Auckland this weekend.  As for other rain events, just bad placement that they have missed us.  Spring may actually be wetter in Auckland.

- WW

Yeah, rain is in the forecast

Yeah, rain is in the forecast but I don't thisk we will see any...

We have already had a dry July... could August turn out the same?

Air pressure

Has the air pressure changed dramatically in the last 24 hours? We are in Auckland. Trying to establish why my husband had got Vertigo today!

I'm no medical expert but

I'm no medical expert but from someone who also suffers vertigo from time to time it can be brought on by the change in season as we head into spring and pollen counts increase. That would be far more likely to be a cause than the air pressure dropping (as people tend to only notice air pressure changes during cyclones and tornados, generally speaking).  As if 4:30pm air pressure was around 1006.9hPa in Auckland which is only just a little shy of normal.

Hope your husband feels better soon!

Cheers

Phil

Rain this weekend

Hi. We have family functions on both Sat & Sun starting at 1330hrs. Your Sat forecast is quite different to MetService which shows quite heavy rain on Sat but lighter showers on Sun. You have sun & cloud on Sat before poss showers Sun. I've looked at your rain maps which show poss wet weather on both days. I prefer your forecast but need to plan activities. Your expert prediction?

Hi there - it all depends on

Hi there - it all depends on the centre of the low, which will be weakening over the weekend and drifting down towards BOP.  If the winds tilt more SE that's like a Canterbury Nor'Wester for Auckland to some degree - it's often dry with the bulk of the rain falling on the eastern side of East Cape and the Coromandel and Kaimai Ranges.  At this stage we think the bulk of the energy will be south of Auckland by Saturday (but some does remain in the north, possibly why there are conflicting forecasts) so currently we're going against the computer models (which also had high confidence of rain in Auckland today, but we went against the models today too). It's a messy weekend and timing is clearly everything, but it's always tricky to get super specific when a subtropical low dies out over the North Island.

We don't monitor MetService daily forecasts and often we have seperate predictions- up to the public to work out who is more accurate in the long run, because we'd both say "we are!".

Cheers, and sorry I can't lock it in any more than that!
