Nelson today. IT IS NOT RAINING.

Your radar shows rain, it is sunny, abit overcast BUT NOT RAINING!!!!!

warm swimming weather

Hi We are travelling across the ditch Please could you inform us of some warm beautiful beaches to swim in February I notice from some of the weather projections that the top temperatures in the far, far north are around a top temperature of 25 degrees c Do we need wet suits to keep warm? chilly ozzies

Hi there! The upper North

Hi there! The upper North Island has the warmest sea water, but so too do some of the harbours/beaches in sheltered parts of the upper South Island. Northland can have highs in the mid to late 20s but the humidity makes it feel like the low to mid 30s. But if you're coming from Aussie (especially QLD) then you may find our sea water more refreshing - but it's still warm enough to spend a decent amount of time in. Also, remember our ozone layer isn't as robust so you may find your skin burns a little faster here despite the heat not being so intense so seek shade and wear sunscreen. Inland NZ is often a few to several degrees hotter than the beaches and Feb can get hot and into the 30s - especially if we have a nor'wester out of Australia at the time!

Have a great trip!

Motueka Temperature Readings

Do you use more than one place for temperature readings in Motueka? I asked some time ago about recordings here and you told me that the one you used at that time was in Kanuka Place. The reason I ask is because temperatures can vary quite a lot here in different parts on Motueka. The current temperature showing of 24 deg is about right for now. Thanks Lorraine Lister

Hi Lorraine, take a look at

Hi Lorraine, take a look at our observations page for all the stations we use. This just makes up the NOW/CURRENT forecast, we don't really use it for any of our forecasting. This year we will be giving people the ability to select other local weather stations should the one that defaults for you be incorrect or not suitable. So watch this space in 2020! :)

Hi there We don't personally

Hi there

We don't personally have thermometers scattered around Motueka, on our live observations page they are thermometers from private weather stations hooked into "The Weather Company" network.

Looks like there is just two stations in Mot currently, one on Wilkie Street I think it is and another on Tudor Street. The Kanuka place one may have dropped out?

Your right temperatures would vary across any area and there will always be little differences here and there but can't monitor it all, if only....

Rain

Hi Guys, The tropics seem quite active and Aus is starting to get a bit of rain while we are stuck under blocking highs. Up here in the Kaipara area we are getting pretty dry. Any sign of change in our weather coming. Cheers Ross.

I get what you are saying, it

I get what you are saying, it has been fairly dry but at the same time the weather has been a bit chaotic and cooler in general for some parts of the country. I'm thankful for the high right now as it's giving a break from the constantly changing weather re forecasting.

Best bet is to keep an eye on our rain maps, anything me or Phil would tell you would be what we are seeing in these maps. https://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/forecast-maps/rain

Looks fairly settled at the moment indeed.

Wind Friday

Ok I'm so annoyed the wind is an easterly for days before and days after friday but not on Friday. I'm going planespotting and since planes takeoff into the wind, the wind direction determines which way they'll depart. An easterly is what I always hope for, to sum up, the aircraft to takeoff to the east and this requires an easterly. I'm just annoyed not only because I may not get another chance for up to a year, but because every other day Is literally perfect! It just had to be the day I'm there a westerly.

from whence

do you get your Hamilton temp data? Normally it's Ruakura but I see you are now including someone in Fairfield. Cheers.

Weird and wonderful clouds

Hi there, my daughter and I were marvelling at the clouds over Christchurch tonight (approx 8:45-9pm). They reflected the setting sun in such a way as to appear like an ocean complete with wave after wave of foamy spume. Then she asked me why the clouds were like that and I hadn't a clue. Could you please help me not look like a complete moron to my kid and explain why clouds form in long wavy layers please?

Hi there, actually the clouds

Hi there, actually the clouds and the air/wind operate in similar ways to the ocean over sand at a beach. If you snorkel around you will see different patterns on the sea floor as the sand reacts to water currents and waves, rocks etc. The airflows, interacting with high and low pressure systems coupled with the hills and mountains create nor'west arches (as we saw in Canterbury today) and other cool clouds - so air flows and terrain below create shapes in clouds. Nor'west flows often produce some of best clouds.

Hope that helps in a simplistic way :)

temps

hi, why is it that a temperature of say 15 in the day time is not hot but those sort of temperatures at night are a recipe for no sleep. worse if its humid

Hi there, good question and

Hi there, good question and is quite common when the weather is cloudy or windy, it tends to make the daytime feel cooler but at night the wind/cloud actually helps keep temperatures up more than a clear, calm, night. Not every time, but quite often that is the case.

Bushfire smoke?

We're traveling across the ditch next week to spend a fortnight on your beautiful South Island. How much of an impact are the Aussie bushfires having on the air quality and visibility at the moment?

Hi there, we've just had a

Hi there, we've just had a windy "refreshing" change out of the Southern Ocean which has cleared the skies nicely. There's a chance of some increased smoke this coming weekend but again another south west change should clear it through. At the moment, no issues. :) Have a great trip!

Dave will let us know if there is anything.

Hi there. Nothing showing up

Hi there. Nothing showing up on the horizon for NZ yet but the tropics north of us is becoming very active (see our lead news story today). Could be a cyclone forming in the next week or so but it's not likely to impact NZ if it does as we'll have a lot of high pressure in our area. Highest risk for cyclones will be Feb, Mar, Apr.

Camping in Whananaki 16th - 19th Jan

Hi We have a campsite booked for the 16th - 19th Jan, what are the chances of fine weather - will we get a chance to get the boat out - struggling with the current winds!! Thanks Kelly

Hi there You may be in luck.

Hi there

You may be in luck. Long range models are picking it to be quite aniticyclonic around then and mainly settled.

It is 10 days away though and in the weather world things can change in that time frame, but in your case lets hope it holds out.

Wind

How accurate are your Kaiteriteri forecasts? Sitting here in a tent as the wind howls and threatens to blow the tent over and your page says we have a 0 km/hr sw.

Hi there, there's a

Hi there, there's a difference between the NOW data and the FORECAST data. Our forecasts are the most accurate in New Zealand but the NOW data comes from private weather stations (because the NZ Government currently blocks us access to tax funded data - see the recent news in our favour here: https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/money/2019/09/metservice-niwa-under-investigation-by-commerce-commission-for-anti-competitive-behaviour.html

But the forecast data has nothing to do with the current weather observations you are seeing - we don't have wind observations in every part of the country. You're better off to look at the hourly wind forecast in our free app our website to see when it's ramping up or dying down - it's very helpful for camping. Or try www.RuralWeather.co.nz which has the most detailed wind maps and graphs for free in NZ (please note it take 10 seconds or so to load the data first time, depending on your internet speeds) - there's a huge amount of info and graphs to help you there.

Finally, take a look at our news feed - we have extensive news and special wind maps in recent days about the incoming winds - also gales in exposed areas may bepossible next 48 hours. All the best in the tent!

Auckland Weather

Hi Guys, I’m finding the Auckland weather this summer absolutely disgusting. Feels like tail end of winter really . Is there any chance we will have a decent summer this year or has it peaked in late November/early December. It’s depressing to see these 19C highs after I’ve been back from my holiday in Brisbane. Thanks.

Hi there, thanks for the

Hi there, thanks for the question. The smoke from Australia and extra cloud and westerlies are helping drop the temperature and bring a gloomier/duller summer at times to the city. However early January can be unsettled and often mid to late January and February/March brings much more settled weather.

This year we're predicting a fairly average summer in Auckland - and average is just that...it's kinda average! You dont get as many of the big blue sky hot days. The next week ahead (as our news section covers) won't be very summer-like but things do improve by this coming Friday.

Cheers
