Your Wx site.

Greetings, the only reason we went looking for another site is our mainstay for the last many years was the 'metservice'. Sadly, someone in their management had a 'brain fart' and decided to change it. Sadly, they don't / didn't understand the 'KISS' principle - so here we are, we found your site. I can't see the metservice admitting they made a mistake, so I guess we're here to stay. PLEASE keep your site simple and easy for the 'great unwashed' to use and understand. Cheers, Ian.

Hi Ian, thanks for this. We

Hi Ian, thanks for this. We are making a big upgrade to our website this summer, but it's mostly to do with making the website work faster, work smarter and be more secure. Our upcoming upgrade is the biggest in 10 years and is needed to keep the website working (it will seriously crash under the weight of data if we keep it this way). Hopefully most people can see why we needed to upgrade and will still find everything they need.

We are a bit surprised so many millions of dollars went into the MetService site for such little change. It's also the third major change to the MetService website this decade so far! This is the number one issue WW has with the two Government forecasters though - so much wasted money for no real return on the tax payer who owns them. And still they won't freely share data we have all already paid for.

Cheers

Phil D

Metservice

I am the same as you , I also used the metservice site for work and fishing as their rain and wind predictions were very good, now there sie tells you nothing other than it will be fine unless it is raining.

i have a relative in christchurch

i heard christchurch just had a tornado. i have a relative in christchurch and i wanna know how strong the tornado was. thanks

It wasn't overly strong

It wasn't overly strong compared to tornadoes you hear about in the USA but for us in NZ it would have been a bit of a jolt to the system. It would have been an EF0 or EF1 at best.

WW

thanks

thanks alot. poor old christchurch i feel sorry for the city. earthquakes, mosque attack and now a tornado. has christchurch itself ever gotten a tornado? if not then todays twister was the first one. it was quite shocking to see. i wonder if the thunderstorm was a supercell?

Christchurch has indeed had

Christchurch has indeed had tornadoes in the past, a few of them.

Here's a list I compiled once, some dates I have information for, other's I have just a date. I've also included a few in the wider Canterbury region:

1962 - Tornado in Chch (information limited)

1975 - (tornado in Governors Bay, Lyttleton Harbour)

1983 - two tornadoes hit Chch, mainly Halswell

1994 - Tornado in Barry's Bay, Banks Peninsula

1999 - Tornado reported at Ruapuna near Mayfield, Mid Canterbury

1999 - Funnel cloud lifted roof tiles and blew a few windows out in Avonside

2002 - A landspout tornado seen west of Chch, another mesocyclonic tornado dropped down near Tai Tapu for a time

Beyond that I've seen various funnels and there have been other tornadic events about the Canterbury region since I've been looking out for them. They have always happened and will continue to do so :)

Cheers
Aaron

thanks for that

it was odd cause yesterday marked the 1 year since the north ashburghton tornado. yesterdays tornado in christchurch must of been the first one since 2002 then. they dont happen much there as taranaki does but still happens.

auckland rain

you guys said it will be drier than average in the vid. but theres been a few downpours here today. getting another one right now. i am quite confused.

One day of rain doesn't

One day of rain doesn't reverse a year of below normal rainfall. Hopefully some downpours bring relief to those that need it most but it's hit and miss.

non stop wet weather

will it ever stop raining in south Otago long enough to get our crops planted and do silage and balage ? thanks

From the 22nd looks fairly

From the 22nd looks fairly dry barring the potential for a few spits on the 23rd. There's some potential for a little bit of wet weather till then :(

Saturday 16/11

Hi guys, Hows Saturday looking for Auckland? We have a cricket game and looking at the rain maps there seems no rain but the forecast suggests some rain? Thanks a lot Allen

Morning Allen, it's looking

Morning Allen, it's looking mainly dry but rain and showers south of Auckland might come up as far north as the Auckland region for a time - so we can't say a totally dry day (even though it does look mainly dry). Based on the rain maps right now it looks like you should be able to play but it's a little borderline as to how far north these showers might go. It's on your side for now though!

Cheers

high risk

metservice has a high risk of thunderstorms for auckland tommorow morning. and i dont know why. please explain to me? cause we have had plenty of thunder this week.

Hi there Probably best to ask

Hi there

Probably best to ask them about their thunderstorm outlook I would think?

There may be a risk about Auckland, looking higher for Northland. Either way that front is starting to weaken a little as it approaches. We'll have to wait and see!

Cheers
Aaron

Naysayers

Hi guys. I don't know what many people's problems are with your forecasts. You had your rain percentage indicator jump hugely for 7am this morning and it started raining outside my front door at 6.48am. 12 minutes out for a prediction - pretty damn good in my opinion! If you could make it hold off for about another half-an-hour whilst I walk to work though, that would be great. Couple of extra thunderstorms wouldn't go amiss either...... Continuing great work will be appreciated!

Weather in Kumeu on 16th November

Hi WW team :) One of my work colleagues is getting married this weekend so of course we're all hoping the weather behaves on their big day. What is the current outlook? Thanks!

Hi there Looks like a mostly

Hi there

Looks like a mostly sunny morning then some cloud at times from afternoon. There may be a brief shower or two from afternoon but these look to be mainly staying south of Auckland so hopefully a dry day for you guys.

Winds moderate from the northwest and a high of 21 to 22 degrees.

Cheers
Aaron

rain

it was raining heavly when it was thundering this morning. and its still raining now i thought it was gonna clear up but hasnt yet.

Thunderstorms and Hail

Hi At 6am this morning your weather for today predicted heavy rain , thunderstorms and hail for Auckland. Ive checked it again at 9am and it says showers clearing. Has the more severe weather moved elsewhere now? My children are climbing the trees at tree adventures in woodhill today and i was worried about the severe weatther!

east

it was thundering here in east auckland. some hail and heavy rain too. must of been a isolated thudnerstorm dont you think

The isolated thunderstorms

The isolated thunderstorms have now mostly passed (around 7 to 8amam). Hopefully no more thunderstorms for them and only increasing sunny spells today :)

thunder

hey weatherwatch it was thundering here in east auckland south east with hail ,heavy rain . but no where else. just like yesterdays thunderstorms it was raining elsewhere but not here. sunday we had a bit of rain but not much with that storm so odd. but this morning was quite awesome.

Exactly. Auckland is big,

Exactly. Auckland is big, thunderstorms are small. When will people realise that it might not affect them directly but will affect someone 5kms down the road from them. Can't blame the forecast as it was correct. Well done Weatherwatch for getting the forecast right time after time even when it's hard to predict weather like thunderstorms.

true

weatherwatch nz tells us that the storms can be isolate. some people just dont believe that and think " no they wont be isolated. they will be widespread." weatherwatch nz was right. the storms was isolated. i managed to hear thunder from all the storms from sunday, monday and tuesday.

odd

hi here in east auckland its been cloudy the whole day. then at 2pm i heard 2-5 rumbles of thunder. but no rain. why didnt it rain when it started thundering at 2pm? was it a hunderstorm without rain or what? just asking.

I didn't even know there was

I didn't even know there was a thunderstorm yesterday as it was that far east, so when I looked at the forecast I thought it was all wrong, but in fact it was totally correct, just for certain parts of Auckland, not where I was exactly.

You were just out of the

You were just out of the rain, the rain was a touch more to the east. Check out this radar animation here:

https://www.metservice.com/maps-radar/rain-radar/auckland-24hr

You can see the rain mostly sticks just out to the east of Auckland.

Cheers
Aaron

thanks

thanks alot. but at least i was close enough to hear the thunder. I see another round of thunderstorms is possible tommorow cool.

Frost

Is Frost predicted for Cust Canterbury tonight? Im away from home and have hundreds of plants I would need to travel and cover. Thanks

Hi there, you should try our

Hi there, you should try our new website www.RuralWeather.co.nz as we do have a Frost Forecaster (beta mode). It's still a work in progress but gives you nice graphs specifically for your location.  (pleaste note it may take first time users 10 seconds to load all the data first time you use it). At this stage frosts don't look too likely with lows down around 6 or 7 degrees (maybe a couple lower in more sheltered areas).

Noticing something here

Hello WW I've been seeing a lot of referencing to MetService for storm info. Why the change? You all have been outstanding in your forecasting in the past years I've relied on you for weather reports. Does this mean we need to make a transition to their site? Help a supporter understand. Thanks Team.

Hi there, NZ tax payers fund

Hi there, NZ tax payers fund thunderstorm outlooks via MetService. We will be including them on our website and app at some time in 2020 so you don't have to go to two websites. :) With MetService now being aggressively commercially taken on by Niwa, another tax funded agency, we are throwing more public support towards MetService in some areas, such as tax funded thunderstorm outlooks and severe thunderstorm warnings. We don't believe Niwa should even be touching weather forecasts, let alone commercially doing it.

Cheers for the support
WW

tommorow

you guys changed the forecast from thunder to just showers the other day. while metservice in their forecast for tommorow says periods of rain with possible thunderstorms? will there be thunder tommorow or no? just asking. had a couple of downpours here in east auckland already. waiting for some thunder. thanks

Hi there, thanks for your

Hi there, thanks for your questions but we can't keep non stop replying to questions about our daily forecasts sorry - what we have published is our current best thinking and the hourly data is updated every 15 minutes on top of that. Weather is changeable - it always will be, so the forecasts show the current best thinking. Use MetService's severe thunderstorm outlook (not their Auckland forecast but their national thunderstorm outlook and warnings map) as well to help you make sense of it all.

Cheers,

WW Team

P.s

i also took a look at rural weather . nz and that has a thudnerstorm icon for tommorow. again sorry for giving you guys too much

sorry about that

sorry about that. i did see the thunderstorm outlook and we under moderate risk again tommorow. but sorry about the annoymous questions wont happen again. i always seem to rely on you guys since weatherwatch i reakon is the best forecasters ever. sorry if i been giving you too much.

It's ok, no worries at all,
