Hi there - actually we were

Hi there - actually we were the ones with different forecasts - we predicted showers at the very most for Auckland city with any possible rain north of the city.  Our weather video on Friday went out of its way to talk about how the chance of rain wasn't likely in Auckland - and our percentage for showers only ever peaked at 60% for half a day this week - most other days it was 20- 30% (which is low).  Yesterday, across the entire day, we wrote specific stories on how we thought the weekend was likely to actually be dry and probably sunnier in Auckland rather than wet like the other forecasters were saying (yesterday morning we said mostly dry and sunny for Saturday while our competitors said "periods of rain") . No forecaster on earth is 100% accurate - as our story yesterday morning said there is a low that is dying and falling apart over the upper North Island - can be almost impossible to predict when it will exactly happen and that's why the computer models and forecasters were unsure. Our website discussed this in detail yesterday and those stories remain on our homepage. I don't know what more we could do to satisfy you - we don't make the weather, we do our best to predict it and considering we were far more accurate than the Govt forecaster with its 50+ meteorologists and millions of dollars of public funding I think my small team of 3 here at WW did a great job this week with a very tricky set up.

Cheers
Phil

The Met Society conference is on this weekend - why aren't you there letting the Society and community know how well you are doing and what services you offer? Were you at the recent Canterbury A and P show?

Saturday 30th November

Hi there, we are having a wedding on Saturday the 30th, is there much chance of rain in the Waitakere area in the afternoon??

Thanks

Hi there - I have good news

Hi there - I have good news and possible bad :)  Firstly the good news - Saturday 30th, at this early stage, has a forecast of cloudy periods, westerlies and just a 10% chance of rain!  However - on Friday the chance for precip is 30% and Sunday is 60%.  So possible wet stuff either side.  At this stage though, it's looking pretty good.  All the best for the wedding - feel free to double check again next week if you're still unsure :)

Cheers

Weather Sat 23 Nov 2013

Today's weather in Auckland is beautiful, not a cloud in the sky from where I'm standing. Are you able to tell me if today's weather will continue tomorrow sat 24 Nov? as we are having our daughters first bday and unsure if the gazebo and umbrellas should be in stand by.
Thanks

Monique

Hi there We have been more

Hi there

We have been more cautious this week in regards to rain this coming Saturday. There does seem to be a clearer outlook now in regards to it being dry for Saturday, even with sunny areas in there. Still the chance of some cloud depending how close the low pressure system to the northeast gets but yeah, it's looking dry on Saturday now.

Cheers

Map doesn't appear to match forecast

Hi

I am confused. I have looked at the rain map for Sun 24th which appears to be clear, however your forecast is for showers... am I reading the map wrong? I have arranged an outdoor birthday celebration, so a few days ago was pleased to see that the forecast was clear and sunny - oh how quickly things change?!

Thanks

 Hi there, thanks for the

Hi there, thanks for the question.  Yeah earlier this week it looked mostly dry - but the models and data suggested for the past 48 hours or so that rain would likely be near Auckland.  We don't predict what the models automatically say - the maps we have on this website are just one tool we use behind the scenes.  However it is looking increasingly likely that the original forecast of dry was more accurate.  You're seeing some flip flopping (and other forecasters are the same) with this system because the low itself is actually falling apart - so it might go sunny or wet.  We've put up a story on our homepage about Auckland this weekend.

Cheers!
Phil

Warkworth Saturday afternoon

We are having our engagement party in warkworth sat 3pm onwards, how is it looking? Hoping for the best! Maybe the south east will mean the rain gets backed up on the eastern side of coromandel?? I know east winds up there usually mean rain... But by the looks of your rain map it might just miss us?

Andy

 Hi there, every update for

Hi there, every update for the past 24 hours has shown an increased chance of the weather being dry - although you're north of Auckland which will be more open to cloud and showers.  Hopefully it stays dry for you - the computers are certainly saying that now!

Belmont & Devonport - Saturday

Hi there,

I'm getting married this Saturday (23/11/2013) and every website I look at has different forecasts. Can you please tell me how likely it is to rain in the the Belmont to Devonport area between 3 & 6pm?

And if it rains, will it be a down pour or just a sun shower sort of thing.

Please tell me it won't rain!!

Thanks,

Vicki

G'day there The forecast as

G'day there

The forecast as it is at the moment above is the best I can tell you at the moment. You might avoid the rain (chances are it will be a bit further north) but showers from time to time are fairly possible.

Winds will be east to southeast.

Hi there Much like in the

Hi there

Much like in the forecast above really. A high of 21 / 22 degrees. In terms of specifics, ESE winds around 25 to 30 km/h gusting 40 to 45 km/h.

Cloudy, the odd shower at times. It isn't looking like persistent rain, just showers passing through from time to time.

Hope that helps.

Will the 6 day forecast apply to Kawau also

6 days out, yes it would. But

6 days out, yes it would. But 2 or 3 days out you could ask us to get a more specific forecast for you.

As for Friday / Saturday / Sunday re Kawau Island.

Friday will see brisk easterlies, 15 to 20 knots gusting 25 knots at times. Morning sunny spells however cloud becoming more frequent during the afternoon to become cloudy at night. Low risk of a brief shower at times after midday.

Saturday will see cloudy skies, the odd shower at times and strong winds, 20 knots gusting 25 to 30 knots at times.

Sunday has morning cloud and the chance of a remaining shower, afternoon sunny spells with southeasterlies at first 15-20 knots easing to 5 knot winds at night.

Rain?

Hi. Am I correct in saying the first week of December looks wet? Wellsford needs rain. Thanks Ross.

Hi Ross Not the whole week

Hi Ross

Not the whole week but there looks to be a fairly beefy frontal system and low early December indeed. Still, that's 10 to 11 days away but something to keep in the back of the mind perhaps.

East Auckland

Will it rain this Saturday evening around Botany? Please say no.

At this stage no, there is a

At this stage no, there is a depression passing off to the northeast on Friday and Saturday. So far it is passing too far away to give rain but it could come back closer again so keep in touch or look at the forecasts above.

Hi there If you have a look

Hi there

If you have a look at the last 4 or 5 comments from us above you'll see what out thoughts on Saturday are. A lot of people seem to want to know what Saturday is going to be like it seems! This sums up our thoughts:

"Looking cloudy with brisk east to southeast winds. The odd shower at times, especially about northern parts of Auckland but the odd shower is likely elsewhere from time to time."

Hazy Auckland

Hi is it just me or is it really hazy over Auckland this afternoon?

Thunder

Hi There
Can hear thunder in Maramarua. What are the chances of us getting a thunder storm or rain? We have had the driest October since 1969 according to old records and November is looking pretty dry so far. We need rain.
Thanks

Today there is a chance for

Today there is a chance for you of a thunderstorm, and if any form over you then rain of course will follow. I won't say a high risk but a moderate chance. I think storms today will have a tendancy to be more about western parts of the North Island.

Summer

Hi WW,

Is it safe to say the cold weather is long gone for Auckland? Any signs of maybe a sudden southerly blast in the near future?

I'm just wondering because it really feels as if Summer has started here with how warm the days and nights have been.

Its also been very dry!

Thanks so much :)

Hi there No really cold

Hi there

No really cold fronts in the pipeline for Auckland at this stage. there may be a front or two work their way up from the south in the near future but none with really cold air.

Cheers
Aaron

Metservice

To be honest I would not put much faith in Metservice forecasts. They overforecast in almost all cases & I am sure that rather than being accurate they are being safe. Any drop of moisture on those days means they can claim to be right.

There are far better weather sites than theirs including this one.

Cheers

Interseting, metservice STILL

Interseting, metservice STILL has five rain icons in their forecast over the next five days...Issued at 2:10am 19 Nov (Today)

Waiheke Island

Hi - can you tell me why Waiheke Island seems to be slighly warmer and drier than Auckland? if this is actually the case?
Cheers

Its far enough from the

Its far enough from the prevailing southwest wind so has less cloud in that situation,in a NE the reverse is true and west Auckland is warmer.

Agree with the comment above

Agree with the comment above - Waiheke definitely has its own microclimate and is far enough east to have more of an east-coast climate - but with the large Coromandel Ranges just out ot the east, it also is quite effective at blocking a lot of eastern rain makers.  Often it can be raining in Auckland and cloud free on the island - why vineyards do well out there and why so many prefer to live there than on the mainland!

Weather predictions

Hi there

Met Service are predicting rain for 5 days straight in Auckland starting Thursday/Friday although you guys are predicting dryish weather, cloud and sunny spells? Why are the Weather predictions so different?

cheers

Hi there Anything that is 6

Hi there

Anything that is 6 days (it might be 5) out for them is computer generated with no human input. There may well be some rain in the future beyond 6 days but it is not likely to be 5 days of solid rain like that is implying. Our predictions are different because we are two different companies.

Either way it is up to you to see who has the most accurate forecasts so I'll put the ball in your court ;)

Many thanks.
Aaron

Thanks for the reply. I think

Thanks for the reply. I think i would trust the Human predictions rather than the computer generated models from Met Service given their track record. Just wanted to know why they always seem to have completely different predictions so far out sometimes compared with many of the other Weather watchers.

cheers :)

I'd trust a qualified

I'd trust a qualified meteorologist trained to interpret credible model data and observations as guidance.
I don't believe the answer is as simple as 'a human is better'. It depends on the ability and also proper verifications.

In saying that the NZ Govt

In saying that the NZ Govt hired WeatherWatch this year for special month long drought/rain forecasts because "qualified meteorologists' at M/S said it could not be done.  We supplied several reports for the Govt and were accurate enough for them to leave the door open to more work should a drought return in the future.  Our brand continues to grow because we believe the last century approach to weather forecasting has had its day and we welcome the new generation - where anyone can forecast the weather, but only the accurate ones rise to the top.

Cheers

weather for the 22nd

Hi there. Can you tell me what the Auckland weather is looking like for Friday 22nd please? We are thinking of having a family picnic for my birthday.
I really enjoy your site and as I have family overseas, it's great to see storm reports from around the world too.

Hi thereOn Friday a low

Hi there

On Friday a low pressure system sits just to the northeast of the North Island and will create a southeasterly airflow over the island. Auckland is borderline in these situations at times, often the Coromandel and northern parts of Auckland can catch rain where as elsewhere there is cloudy areas and dry weather. At the moment that is how it is looking for Friday but a slight change in the positioning of this low and the weather could change a fair amount.

Feel free to come back and ask on Wednesday or Thursday if you like, or keep an eye on the forecasts above :)

Thanks for the kind words :)

Aaron

Thanks Aaron. I was thinking

Thanks Aaron.
I was thinking of Whangaparoa, so I guess that's borderline.
