Well you'll definitely get some rain, easing to showers from afternoon. Whether they will be thundery or not is up for debate. There's a chance yes, but the greater chance appears to be for Northland and Bay Of Plenty from afternoon.

Is this in regards to the front on Saturday morning? At this stage it may just be some light to moderate rain in the morning then easing. The main energy with this front looks to be a bit further north and then offshore to the east from afternoon.

1st March

Good morning My daughter is getting married on Waiheke on the 1st March. It seems as if the weather pattern is changing and I've looked at all the charts and forecasts including the one map of the first March - what is your best guess for the weather at this stage? Thank you Cat

Morning Cat, at this stage

Morning Cat, at this stage it's too far out to lock in specifically but generally speaking it looks mostly dry with the chance of a few showers about. Certainly nothing to indicate rain all day or anything dramatic at this stage. Keep an eye on those long range charts daily and you'll start to see a pattern forming which will help with decision making. Also, within 10 days out, try www.RuralWeather.co.nz as it has more weather data for Waiheke Island than any other forecaster on earth :)

Cheers and all the best for March 1

Hi there

Mon and Tue may be mainly settled with areas of sun and high cloud, winds are looking light. Wednesday cloud thickens and lowers, the odd spit possible from afternoon then expect some evening rain which clears overnight. Thursday dawns mostly sunny with light winds.

That's how things are looking currently, keep up to date here:

And use these maps if you like to show where settled weather might be or areas of rain / fronts:

West Auckland rain yesterday...

Did yesterdays rain in the west of west Auckland break the 'drought' record of days without rain? Or is there just one weather station in Central Auckland it is counted on? Or are there several stations that all must be under 1mm? Was very ominous to see the dark clouds yesterday over the Waitakere Ranges, never reached us in Blockhouse Bay though. What a tease!

Hi there, great question!

Hi there, great question! From what we gather it needs to be recorded by ANY station in the region. The problem in NZ is that Niwa (Government Agency) is now aggressively commercially competing against Metservice (another tax funded Government Agency). The two Government Agencies are now producing two different records for their own commercial purposes, as was again highlighted yesterday when MetService had to shame/correct Niwa: https://www.stuff.co.nz/environment/climate-news/119568558/aucklands-big-dry-claim-of-40-days-without-rain-probably-incorrect--metservice

Because MetService is being fairly quiet about Niwa's attacks on them over the past few years and now Niwa's new set of "records" the Government itself is eroding their own (New Zealand's own) historical data simply to make a few extra $. No other country on earth has an official double up of weather & climate records in order to make more profits.

Good luck working it out! :)

Thanks!

Thank you for that article link. I missed that one on stuff. I should of gotten the calendar and counted the days myself. Sounded a bit dodgy that it was 40 days from the 14th to the 15th Feb! It rained here all day on the 14th Jan. I remember distinctly as we were at the airport getting my Dad from his Wuhan trip that evening. And we sat in the car at McDonalds waiting for it to stop raining to go inside as the flight was late. I won't mention it rained here last week too, one evening. Can't remember what day, maybe just over my house, always seems that way. The plant loved it. Yes have been following your website for many years, love the videos. I'm a big fan. And ask the occasional question....Love the drama between Metservice and Niwa, better than Shortland St.

Sat weather in Auckland

Hi Phil, other websites are predicitng rain/thunderstorms in Auckland this saturday. what is the likelihood of this/rain at this stage?

Hi there That is 5 days away.

Hi there

That is 5 days away. Trying to predict thunderstorms that far out is a bit tricky, yes there looks to be a chance on Saturday but will that actually come to fruition by the time Saturday comes around? It may, it may not.....

But a front does look to move through on Saturday giving a period of rain / showers. The timing could change a little between now and then so there's no point getting into specifics at this stage, just be aware a front will bring some rain or showers for a time on Saturday. Keep an eye on our Auckland forecasts for updates.

Forecast precipitation Napier NZ

Dear Sir I’m a long time fan oF WeatherWatch. I’m in my early eighties, retired near Taradale. The heat from November 2019, continuing now through mid February, is making life very difficult for most ‘oldies’. There seems no sign of relief. Sadly the ‘hopeful messages’ promising showers (never rain!) have led some to coin an expression : ‘Nothing lies like a Napier forecast!’ Our complaint is with MetService which months of observation confirm as quite unreliable except perhaps as saying ‘don’t look for relief- there’s none coming!’ Why is all precipitation heading south - west ? Is help from the ‘tropics’ (N.E.) now a forlorn expectation? I’m hoping this weather, with so many distressing side-effects for the ‘plus 80’s’, won’t force me to buy up elsewhere? Thank you very much for your consideration and excellence of service. (Fr) John A. SM

Good morning and thank you

Good morning and thank you for your question - and your support :)

The week coming up is a fairly hot one - it's not only north west at times but it's also sub-tropical. Hottest days will likely be later this week when 30+ is again possible with overnight lows around 20. But a cool down looks likely this Sunday and into early next week. The set up this year has seen more high pressure stuck over the North Island and that blocks both tropical rainmakers and Southern Ocean fronts.

If you can stand up to this week then you'll likely find some comfort in the cooler, showery, change possible this Sunday and next Monday.

Kind regards and all the best,
Philip Duncan

Is there any real rain coming in the next couple of months. Will this weather pattern change, thinking of culling stock numbers ...

Hi there, in NZ it's hard to

Hi there, in NZ it's hard to see one month out let alone two months, but at this stage there may be some better chances for showers in the coming weeks, and still plenty of activity in the tropics as we go into March.

Rain

We live in Beachlands and are on tank water. I have been told tankers are now scheduling earliest deliveries 7 April. Beachlands seems to be a bit of a micro climate and we tend to miss a bit of Aucklands rain at the best of times. Is there any rain on the horizon for us?.

Hi there, the best way to check local rainfall (daily and hourly rainfall graphs and data) is www.RuralWeather.co.nz (takes several seconds for the page to load first time you visit).

sun intensity

hi weather watch team.. Have a question. We are now coming up two months past longest day. Therefore is the sun intensity and burn time the same as it would be 2 months before the longest day,or dosent it work that way. regards john le sueur.

Hi there John, great

Hi there John, great question. Yes the intensity of the sun and the UV rays will be similar to 2 month prior to the longest day. But there is thermal lag/delay where the seas don't reach peak heat until March....so that helps contribute to warmer conditions around NZ than we would get 2 months prior to the longest day. The weather patterns now also tend to be slower and contribute more warmer airflows than we would get in say October.

Easterlies (or lack of them) Auckland area

Hi I Cannot remember a summer where we have no easterly (NE/ENE) winds across the region. Since November 2019 this must be the driest, sunniest ever period, and i know we're suffering, especially those on tank water, like us. SW winds have been prevalent, which has been moderating the temp's, which has been great, and even though temps have been hot, humidity has been generally around the 50% mark, which again, is highly unusual. Waimauku Fan

easterlies

a week of nor/easters with (warm) rain would be great ! watercare say no shortage, just demand is up, but it is a worry having got this far into summer with no troppo weather events. we are on tank water in a high catchment area, waitaks, and have never bought water however are getting close this year.

Trail riding

Hi We are riding the Pureora Timber Trail in Central North Island on the 24/25 February. You're showing rain for most of next week. Is that likely to flow on into the following week or will we have dry conditions for our ride? Jo

Hi there That is quite a

Hi there

That is quite a while away, anything I say now may become irrelivant as forecasts often change that far out. Best bet is for you to keep an eye on these maps here:

http://weathermap.co.nz/forecast-maps

Use the "Rain" tab then use the drop down menu to go through to the 24th / 25th Feb, at this stage it's looking quite anticyclonic and fairly settled so you may be in luck. As the days move forward keep an eye on those maps and you'll see how it's shaping up the closer those dates get.

Have a good trip!
