Weather ORERE POINT 23rd February

. Im getting married outdoors on morning of 23rd February. Metservice states heavy rain while weatherwatch and all others say light showers. I guess this is uncertainty due to cyclone Oma. I have bought gumboots but give me your opinion! Ps. I know farmers need rain but after the 23rd would be great weather gods.

Hi there, you'll need to keep

Hi there, you'll need to keep up to date with this likely changeable forecast - it's changeable due to Cyclone Oma which will be to our north west then and while still a distance from NZ it may trigger a local area of low pressure. WeatherWatch uses the power of IBM (the most powerful super computer for weather in NZ), MetService has no super computer so we are unsure about their long range data sorry - we currently do not even monitor it. We should know by Monday next week a lot more about Feb 23. At this stage dry is winning more than rain most days, but check in again with us very early next week.

Cheers

Recently my local stations have disappeared;

Moera and Gracefield, Lower Hutt appeared to provide accurate readings and were closest. Gracefield was located at the government research establishment. Nearest now Waterloo over 4k away and inland. Why are you not using these sites? Henry

Good Morning Henry. We

Good Morning Henry. We currently have more weather stations than any of the forecasters we must tax fund but some of this data has been switched off due to a couple of reasons. 1) Being delayed before being made public (ie, NIWA even though we all fund them, they delay sharing public weather obs by 24 hours and MetService up to 3 hours) so some have been removed from the Government side. 2) As for the private side, because we have so many stations to choose from not always the most local one is the most accurate one. We're working on a better observations lay out this year, one that will put the power in your hands to choose another local station should the one we automatically pick not be the one you want. Watch this space.

Kind regards

Auckland weather

Really appreciate your work here. Good detail and easy to understand, cheers. Any respite from this Auckland heat on the horizon?

Hi there Thankyou! Perhaps

Hi there

Thankyou!

Perhaps early next week, but not all that cool, highs will still likely be in the early to mid twenties. Otherwise the warm weather continues :)

I am sorry but I live in

I am sorry but I live in Pureora and your forecasts for here are off the wall. Rain and only 18°. Madness. Hot wind and 30 more to the point. Whats going on? I can see the top of Mt Pureora....no rain up there. Not likely to either.

Hi there, just looked into

Hi there, just looked into this and it certainly seems strange. We may do some further digging but first glance is this detailed local forecast may actually be picking a location on the mountain (it shows a 70% chance of an afternoon heat downpour there, even though it's not happening the risk is there). Could you use Tihoi or Bennydale? Both of those nearby locations are much more inline with your weather with dry skies and highs close to 30 :)

Cheers WW

Thermometer Wrong

Hello there. Something is very definitely wrong with the Gisborne reading. It is a lot more than 14 degrees here today!!!

Hi there

Phil wrote a very detailed reply just below to a question similar to yours, atleast it has the answers you need. Here it is! :)

Hey there, thanks so much for your message, we love getting ones like this one that drill down. Firstly, we're hugely disappointed Labour Minister Megan Woods said to us in a Beehive meeting in October that MetService/NIWA making profits for them to spend was much more important than making data (we all collective tax fund) being freely available. Personally, I was gutted by that as she is supposed to be the Minister for "Innovation" and "science".

NZ is the only country in the western world to be like Russia/China in the weather world where the people are taxed to create a weather observations they cannot then openly use.

That aside, we are very grateful to the hundreds of hard working tax paying Kiwis who have uploaded their data. However you're slightly wrong that it's all amateur - yes there is definitely a majority of private weather stations run by 'amateurs' but we also have Govt airport data in the mix and professional private vineyard stations too. The truly "amateur" ones are sometimes quite obvious - they tend to be different to the many around them. We have no support from NZ Government - in fact 2 (of 3) Government run commercial competitors (NIWA, MetService) have been trying hard (including sending us legal threats from tax-funded-lawyers for daring to use public tax funded data and weather observations) to stop us. We have made complaints to the Commerce Commission which they are currently now investigating. So we're doing our best to share more data - and our advice to those who see incorrect readings is to take a look at the totality of stations around them and see the average.

It was WeatherWatch directly that made the changes to the Weather Company stations and we're working hard to improve our services this year, including adding some (delayed sadly) Government/tax payer owned data.

Hope that helps :)
Cheers and thanks again for the message and support.

PS - If you see a weather station you think is consistently or extremely out of touch, simply give us the full STATION ID (in the app and website in the "NOW" section) or from the Observations page directly - and we will block it until they reach the right standards. "

Out of Touch Station

Cheers Aaron. Love your WeatherWatch site as it's always more accurate than the MetService one. This is the dodgy station Gisborne West (IGISBORN7). The Whataupoko one is the one that is usually displayed but this one has popped up today. It feels like 36 here today.

Hi there, we've removed this

Hi there, we've removed this station now - thanks very much for providing the Station ID, Hopefully it's accurate now (definitely low 30s around parts of Gisborne!). Have a great day :)

Rain???

Any idea when we can expect any kind of decent rain in the dairy flat area?

May be an isolated heavy

May be an isolated heavy shower on Tuesday next week (19th). On the same note there is a chance it could be fairly dry, it just depends where showers form in the afternoon.

Otherwise it's looking quite dry out till the last day of February which is as far as I can see.

Cheers

Accuracy of live observations

Hello - I see that the live observations are vastly improved in that their locations are marked accurately on the map, well done to the Weather Company, and presumably Weatherwatch had a hand in that. However, is there a means for questioning or correcting accuracy of the data? The Snells Beach record has been showing the opposite of actual for wind direction for the several days I have been following it. e.g. Currently (mid afternoon 12th February) it shows the wind is SSE but it has definitely been a westerly or southwesterly since at least yesterday. It also says there is no windspeed but there is are reasonable gusts currently. The temperature at 28 degrees makes sense and it correctly says there has been no rain today so there is nothing to whinge about there. I understand these recordings are from local amateur weather stations but they aren't necessarily useful if they are inaccurate, and no doubt the owners would also like to know they are providing accurate data. Can anything be done to alert the owner to the problem?

Hey there, thanks SO much for

Wedding

Hey Mate we have an outdoor wedding on march 4th in Auckland, i realize that is sometime away still but how settled is it all looking? also we are having a holiday up in the bay of islands 16-23 feb are we going to get any good weather?

Hi there Not sure on March

Hi there

Not sure on March 4th, that's too far beyond any crystal ball I have unfortunately. Hopefully it is settled for you!

As for the 16th to 23rd, there are hints of tropical activity around then bringing in easterly quarter winds. There doesn't look to be any direct hits from lows at this stage but there may be a few periods of rain / showers. But there appears to be days of dry with sun / cloud also. It's probably going to be more dry then it is wet but prepare for a few wet periods I would say. Keep an eye on this if you like: https://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/location/Russell

Hope that helps, have a great time away! :)

Feb 22nd Rain/conditions Wellington

Hi Aaron, I hope you are well. Can you kindly confirm if there is any likelyhood of rain in Wellington, Kapiti on the 22nd Feb in the afternoon please? Do you have an idea of the general condition on the afternoon? I dont believe the rain map showed this but would be comforting to hear from yourself. Thank you kindly.

Hi there, at this stage there

Hi there, at this stage there may be a cold front moving up the country around Feb 21 and 22 bringing a south to south west change and showers to Kapiti. Not locked in being so very far out but that's the latest.  In a few days time we'll have a better idea.
All the best :)

Is there any tropical cyclone

Is there any tropical cyclone risk to New Zealand in the future?

At some point in the future,

At some point in the future, sure there will probably be a risk of some sort. In the near future? Doesn't seem to be any big risks at the moment. Tropical activity seems to be staying to the north at this stage.

Use these maps here: http://weathermap.co.nz/forecast-maps

Click on "Rain", you can scroll through the next couple of weeks using those maps. As you'll see, no tropical cyclones coming down near NZ at this stage.

Hi there

When you click on those beach locations a box will pop up and it does have tide information. :)

Milford sound

Hello there, I'm going on the Milford sound cruise on Feb 14 at 10:30am and the forecast appears to be 100% to 70% chance of rain. But when I look at the rain radar, there is not much cloud showing in this region, I'm also thinking of rescheduling my cruise to 13:00 since it appear to be getting better. I would really appreciate your thoughts and your recommended time I should be getting on the cruise.

Hi there The later in the day

Hi there

The later in the day you can book that cruise the better from what I can see. Looks quite wet in the morning and for a fair amount of the afternoon to be honest, there is a chance it could break in the afternoon perhaps so you never know.

Have a great day either way! :)

February 22nd 2019

Hi there, any chance you have an indication of what the weather might be doing in Hawera, Sth taranaki on February 22nd? Usually we look at the Whanganui weather which seems to be more accurate than New Plymouth. We are getting married, outside.... and hoping we get beautiful weather like today? Clouds are ok.... any chance you can also make the happen?! Thanks!

Conditions look to be

Conditions look to be anticyclonic around then so that should mean settled and hopefully mostly sunny weather.

Good luck and wishing you the best for the big day :)

Feb 16th in Auckland

Hey guys Metservice is saying that we won't be seeing any rain for a while now? Now that Cyclone Neil has weakened, does that mean the weather situation for Auckland this weekend may be looking a bit better? See Metservices statements below... No mention of the possible wet weather that was meant to come in on Friday or Saturday that a couple of maps were showing? Thoughts? https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2019/02/weather-new-zealand-to-stay-dry-despite-cyclone-brewing-in-the-pacific.html https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12202490

Have just done a string of

Have just done a string of updates for Auckland through to Saturday, is looking mainly dry for most of this coming week. That tropical low (which it will be by then) looks to pass just too far to the east of the North Island next weekend, but you never know, will be something to keep an eye on.

Cheers

Thanks Aaron

Auckland February 16th

Hey guys Just after an update on Auckland weather for Feb 16th. The Metvuw maps show some stuff coming in from the tropics and pretty much sitting over the top of the North Island for a number of days? There is also a high coming across from the Tasman that has the potential to push this away. Other weather forecasts are showing a miss or it just coming in on Friday and then going. Thoughts on where things may end up? 7 days out so anything can change but when will we be able to get a better read on this situation. 7 days ago Metvuw showed a similar situation for this weekend but it changed within the last few days. Here's hoping the same thing happens for Auckland next weekend. Thanks for your time Concerned Outdoor Auckland Event Promoter here :)

Hi there,  We understand

Hi there,

We understand your frustration. Unfortunately Auckland is stuck *between* two highs next weekend which means if there is no high pressure over us that tropical low you're seeing may well drag down tropical rain clouds. But the highs in summer are powerful and may dominate, keeping the rain offshore to our north. That's why you're seeing some confusion and every model update every few hours may be quite dramatically different (due to some updates making those highs bigger and closer to NZ, which can have a big impact on how far south that rain might go. We've just put up a detailed story on it here: www.weatherwatch.co.nz/content/cyclone-neil-forms-poses-direct-threat-tonga-sunday-another-bigger-storm-possible-days-later

All the best and check back for our daily news and video updates about it next week.

Looks like it's going to miss us this weekend now? https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12202490

Thanks for the info guys.

Thanks for the info guys. Fingers crossed on a positive outcome :)

Is there the possibility of

Is there the possibility of an ex tropical cyclone hitting New Zealand in the future?

Hi there, interesting timing

Hi there, interesting timing as we've just put up this news story here about that very topic (no storm, but the leftovers or some affects may impact us): We'll know more on Monday but here's the latest on the new cyclone that has today formed and another one that might follow it: www.weatherwatch.co.nz/content/cyclone-neil-forms-poses-direct-threat-tonga-sunday-another-bigger-storm-possible-days-later

any rain due during the cricket later?

wondering if the weather is to stay dry for the T20 at Eden park later?

It should stay mainly dry,

It should stay mainly dry, there is a chance of a shower or two but it's on the low side. A slightly higher chance exists overnight.

Rain - Historic levels

Hi, I'm trying to find out rainfall levels in Cromwell, over a historic 3 month period. I've been searching online for a couple of days and am really struggling. Does WW have historic data as to what actually happened, as opposed to forecasted to happen?

Hi there - we are currently

Hi there - we are currently in talks with IBM about getting better historical data for NZ as well as building our own network with Amazon purely so people like you can easily do this - check the history to match with the forecasts. Sadly we all have to tax fund both NIWA and MetService which keep observations but make it very cluinky and hard to access to retain their commercial monopolies. We're fighting the good fight but currently have no Free historical data, so your best bet is to email NIWA and ask them for access to tax funded observations for that location over that period of time. Sadly Minister Megan Woods in this current Government recently refused to support open weather data because, as she said to us in a meeting at the Beehive, 'We want to spend their profits'.

We wish you all the best
Cheers

Flying to AKL

Dear WW Team I am flying to Auckland from the South Island on Saturday morning with very precious cargo (my elderly pussycat) and I noticed the winds are 20+ km/hr in Auckland. Will this cause any turbulence enroute?? We are coming for a holiday before Uni starts. Thank you guys heaps. Even my cat trusts your weather forecasts!!! D & the frequent flying puss! =^--^=

Hi there Must admit

Hi there

Must admit turbulence and figuring out whether it is likely or not is not my expertise, but suffice to say the weather doesn't look unstable for Auckland around then so my opinion is turbulance would be a low'ish risk I'd imagine. But best bet would be to chat to your pilot before the flight, they'll have that worked out much more then I would know.

Good to hear you and your cat like our forecasts, is much appreciated by the team! :)

Have a great trip.
