A low chance but more then likely no, instability is not looking as good for the Auckland area today. Could be an isolated shower or two perhaps.

The nature of thunderstorms is they are often quite isolated meaning some areas may get heavy rain / downpours while other areas close by may see nothing at all. It depends where convergence lines form (where winds meet) and what side of the convergence is more dominant as to which side of the Auckland isthmus* clouds / storms form. Or winds may be equal either side meaning storms form right in the middle. Sometimes this is able to be sussed out in regards to what breeze may be more dominant but other times it can be a bit up in the air, excuse the pun. So when thunderstorms are forecast they are often mentioned as only a "risk" of happening as it can be hard to pin point where they may form.

*An isthmus is a narrow piece of land connecting two larger areas across an expanse of water by which they are otherwise separated.

Sorry our reply may be a little late, but you've probably realised we do have some thunderstorms - quite a bit flare up at the moment (10pm) but should taper off later. Might be more overnight and tomorrow too (like today, isolated but possibly big).

Hi there, we have the right ingredients for big downpours, maybe thunder, but like today it may only affect a small portion of the region. This set up is a bit like cooking popcorn in the this analogy!). Keep an eye on our forecasts on Saturday, we tend to live update (which means every 30 mins or so) when the weather becomes unstable/changeable or high demand.

Hi there, good question as we've had a few risk days this week but the Friday/Saturday period was always most likely to be most active. Still some isolated thunderstorms in West Auckland this afternoon, Saturday has a a similar risk but there may be a few showers with no thunder too.

Hey there, to be honest with you Auckland's forecast tomorrow is very tricky to be precise about as these sorts of downpours can bubble up over quite a large area but only affect a minority. Frustrating! At this stage it looks like there could be both mid to late morning and afternoon isolated downpours, possibly more likely in western Auckland and rural North and South. We'll be likely live updating our Auckland forecast on Saturday to stay on top of this so check back for updates. All the best with the hedge trimming - there should be some good dry spells around.

Hi there, this is due to them covering their backs basically, so they can say "see, we warned you" - but the downside is that you become the boy who cried wolf. Thunderstorms in NZ can be especially tricky to be precise about but extra care in the wording of forecasts, plus extra updates, can make a world of difference at reducing "big" forecasts and improving accuracy.

Hi there, we have a news story about Owen on our homepage. The remnants may come here but they might only be a few showers or downpours. No storm at all is forecast for NZ at this stage with it likely falling part over eastern Aussie. One to watch though as Owen has reformed and has some potential to reform once again before NZ...but that is currently not what we are forecasting.

Hey there, yes you're quite right! We're quite a bit more conservative with thunderstorms (which is why Auckland Civil Defence hired us for nearly a decade to reduce their false alarms coming from MetService). Wednesday's risk is mainly in Waikato but it does somewhat spillover into South Auckland (hence our mention). West Auckland, at this stage, looks dry for Weds but Thursday may see downpours further north towards Hokianga drift down into Waitakere. Friday has a similar risk. Overall looks mainly dry but big cloud build ups/downpours/thunder can drift in the sea breezes. Auckland has a LOT of moving parts with the weather sometimes!!

Hi there, good question. MetService has select areas where they have a weather station but temperatures can vary quite a bit in NZ within towns/cities. Some can vary by as much as 10 degrees at the same time. Inland there's less fluctuation but normal to expect a few degrees difference. We aren't sure where MetService get their Te Kuiti reading from but you can see many weather stations in your area here www.weatherwatch.co.nz/observations

Hi there, the weekend is a little 50/50 in Auckland due to downpours and drizzle patches both possible...plus plenty of dry weather too. Looks like an afternoon downpour is possible out west on Saturday PM, but hard to know in advance if it will form/affect western areas or to the rural north or south and avoid the city entirely. Keep an eye on the rain maps for more detail. All the best!

If you go to our Auckland forecasts then scroll down till Sunday, then click on the "View hourly forecast" tab you can see what the wind speeds will roughly be for what time.

Wow!!

Hi there

Temperatures will be around 19 to 20 degrees at 4pm, drifting down to 17 degrees at 7pm. Hitting 15 at 10pm.

You can hit the "hourly forecasts" tab under each day and that will give you a rundown of where the temperatures will be at at what time etc. Looks like I got it about right, I forgot we even had that! lol.

Hi there, can you please give us the Station ID so we can remove it. We are working to improve weather sensors next year as we do not operate/own any ourselves. Sadly the NZ Government won't give us access to public weather stations we all have to fund so we always have to find alternatives.

Hi there, winds aren't expected to be gale force tonight but will be a bit blustery at times. In knots (below) gale force is 30 and up (red). Auckland looks to be mainly in the 15 to 25 knot bracket. It will be a fairly solid wind in exposed places with a few big gusts overnight - possibly briefly gale force in the most exposed areas (like the Harbour Bridge, hill tops, marine areas, etc). Keep an eye on your hourly forecasts for average wind speeds specific to where you are and use the Wind Maps too to help see where the strongest winds will be and when. The low moving in is also falling apart so damaging winds aren't currently forecast.

Hi there, Saturday is a very tricky day to be accurate about because we have both a band of rain moving in, then the risk of some heavy downpours - but it's hit and miss with dry spells developing. Can't answer your question with any real certainty due to the hit and miss nature of tomorrow. Definitely some chances you'll be ok to play then, but equally there could be a downpour that sets in... frustrating weather to plan things around! Sorry we can't be more specific than that.
