For over a decade WeatherWatch.co.nz has loved to receive your comments and questions here, however we need to tighten up on our rules of reply so that we can spend more time focusing on forecasting.

Before you ask a question please ensure you have read our latest news stories, weather video and specially made infographics on our homepage, as we will no longer be answering questions that are already generally answered there, or answered already in our hourly or 10 day forecasts at both WeatherWatch.co.nz or RuralWeather.co.nz

Hi there

Best thing to do is keep an eye on our Auckland forecasts, there you can see what temperatures will be like for the next 10 days out. Beyond that it gets a bit blurred in terms of accuracy.

Hope you have some good time off :)

What are the

What are the chances a cyclone hitting eastern australia or new zealand over the next two weeks

NZ Herald has a spectacular

NZ Herald has a spectacular headline about a cyclone today - pity the story behind it isn't quite so dramatic, full of "possible", "too far out" and "uncertain" comments.

Not sure, long range maps

Not sure, long range maps suggest a tightly wound low moving into the Tasman around the 16th / 17th / 18th Feb from the north so may be something to keep an eye on. But it's so far out, it isn't exactly exact.

Use these maps here: http://www.weathermap.co.nz/forecast-maps

Click on the "Rain" tab, you'll see what I'm looking at.

Still the case?

Hi Aaron Is this still the case (referring to your above comment re: 16th/17th / 18th) weather In auckland still looking good? Getting married on Saturday and could really do with any cyclones holding off .... as a marquee in a paddock :) Appreciate all your hard work!

is Auckland heading for a drought ? BOP imposed water restrictions ie the use of watering systems is not allowed . are we in AKL heading in that direction ?

Hi there, yes we have already

Hi there, yes we have already informed the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) that a drought has formed in Auckland, especially central and northern areas. In NZ we have an often confusing system for droughts being announced by the Government.

Well done! Love weatherwatch!

Hi, a compliment not a query! For a non funded operation I think you guys are doing an awesome job. I've always gone to Metservice for weather info but am finding Weatherwatch far better. I've been fascinated by the weather for many years but it is a fickle thing and can change its mind at a moments notice. You guys are pretty spot on. I was interested to read some of the comments from Thursday last week, 30th Jan, about the prediction of rain. I drove from Auckland to Broadwood on Friday, 31st Jan and went through some very significant, very localised patches of rain especially between Kawakawa and Otiaka. Honestly my wipers were flapping away madly and I still had trouble seeing! So keep up the good work. It's very much appreciated. Jill

Hello, When can we expect

Hello, When can we expect some cool weather to head our way in Auckland? Thanks!

Hopefully it will be a bit

Hopefully it will be a bit cooler tomorrow and the next week ahead isn't as humid so it should feel a little cooler too.

Cheers :)

At the moment in Auckland, we gardeners would say "risk of a shower" should be "hope for a downpour"!!!

You'd find a lot of farmers

You'd find a lot of farmers across the North Island and upper South Island saying the same thing!!  We're hoping for a change in late February. Keep up the watering :)

Where in Auckland does daily temperature reading come from?

Daily temperature reading given as ‘Auckland’ is very often wrong. Live at Hobsonville and temps are usually at least 2* higher than quoted Auckland temp.

Hi there, as per the comment

Hi there, as per the comment below Auckland is a very large region and there is variability. The daily high is a general single temperature. If you look at our live current observations you will see a several degree spread across the city across much of the day, which is fairly normal. But we have to pick one number to make it easier for people- we have toyed with the idea of having a daily high range, which may address people who want more detail.

Cheers

Auckland is a big place. It

Auckland is a big place. It can be raining out west, while it be dry in the east and be several degrees apart in temperature too. So I wouldn't say it's wrong, it's just not what you're experiencing in Hobsonville.

Mid Feb

Hi Phil I see models are picking a cyclone in the Coral Sea mid Feb. I wonder if this could be a drought breaker for the North Island? If it does verify it is in the right area to come to NZ Cheers Dave

Hi there Dave, yes we're

Hi there Dave, yes we're monitoring that tropical cyclone potential two weeks from now. The high pressure belt around NZ will be the guiding force on where the low will track. It's still too far out to lock in but definitely worth monitoring towards late February.

Rains

Is there any prediction about when rains are expected in the Auckland region. It has been a long dry spell.

Forecast more accurate than Metservice

Hi I'm in Invercargill. I find that your graphs and forecasts are more accurate for Southland than metservice. Do you get your data from the same source? Are you Government funded or independent? Good on you for doing a better job :) Trish

Hi there Trish, thanks very

Hi there Trish, thanks very much for the feedback and support  - it means a lot to our small team :) No, we don't take any forecast data from the NZ Government. In fact, we can't even get current observations that tax payers all fund - which is why we're thrilled that after 10 years the Commerce Commission is now investigating both Niwa and MetService for 1) anti-competitive behaviour and 1) abuse of their marketplace power. You can read about it here: www.newshub.co.nz/home/money/2019/09/metservice-niwa-under-investigation-by-commerce-commission-for-anti-competitive-behaviour.html

As for accuracy, we use IBM's super computer (much more powerful and larger than anything the NZ Government produces). Sadly, the NZ taxpayers must fund and own three commercial forecasters yet our private independent website has become very popular because of our focus on higher accuracy and ensuring we're going the extra mile - but we get ZERO tax funding or support - in fact Niwa and MetService tell our clients to stop using us. (Niwa and MetService get over 200 million each year plus other huge grants).

IBM's data has been independently verified as the most accurate in the world. WeatherWatch also has a small team of local forecasters in NZ and some overseas meteorologists we can use in big events. We're up against huge and unfair competition but support and messages like yours make it all worth while :)

Thanks heaps
Phil D

Hi Bob, we agree and are making changes this year - we're also looking to include tidal information in the daily forecast so it's all in one place. Working on some other projects first but this is in the 2020 pipeline :)

So Southerly hot

Hello. Why are we so warm/hot (in Auckland) with a southerly wind pattern. I would not like to think of the temps of a more humid northerly/easterly pattern although it might bring a little more rain? Thanks

Hi there, please check out

Hi there, please check out our weather videos over the past week - we explain why the southerly flow is kind of a "fake" one :)

Weather observation sites

Hi there, love the forecasting and information you guys provide us mere mortals whose expertise consists of looking at the sky or our beloved mountain and saying 'oh, I think it's going to rain' ! Those words are not actually spoken in recent times, but we do live in hope. My question to you is in regards the weather station currently used to report Kawerau temps. It says our readings come from Thornton (IWHAKA4), being a coastal area a few kms away. I'm sure the reports used to come from other sites closer to Kawerau. Are those sites no longer working? Just a query. Personally I look at your forecast info and still look at the sky, so...... Keep up the good work.

Hi there, thanks for the

Hi there, thanks for the question. You can see all the observations we have here: https://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/observations

We have no control over these stations, they are mostly privately operated. In the next couple of weeks we'll be upgrading how we display the local Observations, allowing you to view other nearby stations too.

Cheers and thanks for the support,

Hi Phil, Just wondering if at some point you will also do the seasonal forecasts in video format. Really enjoy your daily videos and personally they make the most sense in terms of getting the information across. Cheers! Tom

Hey Tom, thanks for the

Hey Tom, thanks for the question. Yes we do have plans to do that later this year - we're in the process of sorting a new studio to give us more flexibility. So basically 'watch this space'. We're also looking to launch a climate/seasonal focused website later this year too.

Cheers

100% now not anonymous

100% here. Thanks for your reply below. Weather is ever-changing as it unfolds and exact predictions are difficult if not impossible. While there is obviously much for me to follow up on within your website (which I will do) , the tone of your response was a bit condescending and even rude. You could (with respect) address some fundamentals... such as not using the heading "Whangarei" and the prediction "100%" in relation to each other. Good luck with everything else, Martin

Hi there Martin,Thanks for

Hi there Martin,

Thanks for the follow up. We get daily complaints from people who don't realise they are paying for Niwa and MetService forecasts (through taxes) and that WW is an entirely free service. We provide a huge amount of work in our daily news and video feed to bring the free daily forecasts to life. So complaints about our free service - when you already pay for two other weather services - is why we sometimes get frustrated with blunt complaints (and most don't complain to the Government forecasters they pay for - they complain to our free service because we actually take the time to respond!).

That's why we occasionally come across 'rude' - I apologise if we offended you. Thanks for taking a look and digging deeper into what we have to offer, though. I'm sure you'll find it helpful - the big picture makes your local forecast more realistic and make more sense.
Kind regards
Philip Duncan

100%

When you give a 70% prediction of rain then there is obviously some movement for doubt... but 100%? surely means it will happen. We know you do not control the weather but people do trust your site enough to plan their lives at least a little bit... watering gardens, crops, personal hygiene etc The prediction of 100% certainty of rain in Whangarei this afternoon/evening was misleading enough to be exactly the opposite of what actually happened.

Settle gretel.

Settle gretel.

Hi there, apologies the

Hi and thanks for your anonymous complaint about our free service,

It seems the several large downpours around Whangarei missed you yesterday. Some were significant. As we said for the past 14 days any rain in the top of NZ will be *very* isolated. If weather is that important then you should rely on more than just the free local forecast - eg, if weather is really that important to you why wouldn't you read our infographics, news stories about rain and our daily videos? If you're simply relying on the most basic free forecast then that will never be enough for an actual business wanting perfection. Even with 100% confidence of showers forming around Whangarei the geography and the very definition of showers means you may not be guaranteed one at your house. You may find this interesting about people who complain about free forecasts - because we produce a tonne of daily content to make your local forecasts come to life and make sense and if you're following our other content yesterday should not have been a surprise at all:  https://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/content/most-complaints-we-get-are-ridiculous-here-are-some-tips-reduce-weather-surprises

Cheers

WW

5pm Yesterday showing big downpours that formed.

HAHAHAH

This response made my morning! If this user does not appreciate your forecasts, why do they use them? they should just bugger off to metservice.......once they have done that they will come crawling back to WW as they'll realise that you are far more reliable than any other weather service

Reliability

Hi Phil, just wondering how reliable 7-10 day pressure charts are and from how many days out can you start really trusting them? Thanks. Tom

Hey Tom, good question but a

Hey Tom, good question but a little tricky to be too precise on. Most charts are fairly reliable generally for 7 to 10 days out. They give a good GENERAL idea of where highs and lows might be and therefore temperatures and rainfall chances. When it comes to getting specific to a region it can become harder depending on the specific set up.

With a lot of high pressure around the weather doesn't change fast. Best thing is to look for trends - ie if you see a low near Northland one day, gone the next day, and day three there is a low in the Tasman then you can assume there is a moderate chance of low pressure forming "somewhere in the area".

The closer you follow the charts the more you tend to find their strengths and weaknesses. If you take a general approach you'll find 7-10 days helpful but for specific forecasts that far out it's more moderate. This is why IBM's super computer is helpful as it crunches multiple models (and learns from their mistakes) to produce a detailed 10 day forecast . You may find the data at RuralWeather.co.nz (takes 10 seconds to load) helpful at backing up what you can see on the 7-10 day charts.

Cheers :)
