Auckland winds

Hi are the winds expected for Auckland likely to cause flight delays and cancellations? Metservice has put out possibly 80k winds? Thanks

Hi there, winds of 80km/h are

Hi there, winds of 80km/h are most likely in gusts which may affect some smaller aircraft. The main issue with possible flight delays this weekend may be more from down country where winds look stronger and may stop some flights getting to Auckland on time (or at all). Larger planes shouldn't be so much affected. So yes, some risk but it may be more due to winds down country than in Auckland itself.

Kind regards

Auckland temperature dropping

Noticeable drop in temperature following an icy heavy shower a little earlier. bbbrrrr chilly Zelda

Definitely getting the change

Definitely getting the change now!

Snow? Dunedin?

Any chance of sea level snow this week in Dunedin?

Hi there, the chance is

Hi there, the chance is fairly low for any sea level snow but a few flurries are possible higher in the city (but won't settle) - also perhaps some sea level sleet. Just looks a little too warm (only by a few degrees) for sea level snow.

Cheers

Fog due in Napier or Auckland?

Hi there do you think there will be fog tomorrow in either napier or auckland? Got a few medical appointments to get to in Auckland so am hoping our morning flight isn’t cancelled! Thanks

Hi there, at this stage no

Hi there, at this stage no fog is forecast at either airport. We have had a few surprise foggy areas this week but there should be too much wind and unfavourable conditions tomorrow. All the best for fights and appointments!

Fog

Hi there Is fog expected around 6pm Saturday night (3 August) in Chirstchurch? Worried about missing an international connection! Appreciate your help.

Hi there, no fog isn't

Hi there, no fog isn't forecast at this stage for the weekend - but strong to gale force winds are but it's too early to know if it will cause any flight issues. But fog, which is usually more problematic, is not in the current forecast.
Cheers and safe travels!

Is any severe weather likely

Is any severe weather likely for Christchurch over the next 2 weeks?

Could be some heavy rain on

Could be some heavy rain on Wednesday morning this coming week. Monday 5th August, hints of some very cold air around then, outside chance of snow flurries into Chch perhaps? But being this far out chances are that snow level will lift or the weather for then may change completely so don't hold any hopes on that.

Looking fairly placid after that as far as I can see.

Hope that helps!

Cheers

Whakapapa

Hi there Can you tell me how Whakapapa ski field is looking for this Mon, Tues -Wed? I know they need the snow but I’m keen to take the kids for a wee ski!

Hi there Apologies about the

Hi there

Apologies about the late reply.

Monday looks good, sunny areas and some high cloud with light winds. Showers move in Tuesday morning with northwesterlies strengthening during the day. Wednesday has heavy showers, some hail, snow likely and strong to gale Nor'West winds.

So Monday good, Tuesday you may get away with some sking in the morning perhaps?? Wednesday looks no good.

Cheers
Aaron

Will morning fog in Christchurch continue?

Hello It's been very foggy in the morning over the last couple of days. Is this expected to continue over the next few days? Thanks!

Good morning, at this stage

Good morning, at this stage it's looking a little less likely for fog in the days ahead due to more of a breeze to blow it away/stop it from forming. We may still get some isolated patches but generally the risks do look slightly lower in the mornings ahead.

Cheers!

Fog

Hi there I have a stopover in CHCH then an international flight to catch on Saturday night. Taking off from CHCH at 6 pm Saturday (3rd August). Is fog likely to cause any issues? Really appreciate your help.

Wellington in 3 weeks

Hi there, I am getting married in 3 weeks today in Wellington (wishing for weather like it is today!) but thought even though its maybe impossible to tell, do you have any insight as to the weather on the 16th August in the capital? I am trying to prepare myself for the worst, just in case :)

Hi there, it's too far out to

Hi there, it's too far out to see that far but the second week of August may have high pressure slowly moving away which can lead to warmer weather moving in but sometimes some rain too. We really can't lock in anything with accuracy until at least 10 days out though. All the best and keep an eye on our Wellington forecasts from August 6th for the 16th. Fingers crossed it pans out as nice as it is right now!! :)

Kind regards

lightning

Why is there lots of lightning out to sea? I just checked the lightning tracker and there has been a heap of lightning. Just wanted to know. Good website and nice videos. keep it up.

Hi there, thanks for the

Hi there, thanks for the question and the very kind feedback (much appreciated!). There is a small but very active cold front out in the Tasman Sea, mainly in the lower half. The detectors in NZ aren't professional (as MetService won't share the tax owned tracker) so sometimes when lightning is well offshore our detectors here pick it up but can't quite place it. Just had a look at the global lightning tracker, which our friends at Weatherzone in Sydney use, and this confirms these storms.

Snow

Thoughts on Ohau (field) receiving any snow this week?

Hi there, there may be some

Hi there, there may be some on Sunday and Monday otherwise it's mostly dry. Looks like they have a 40cm base at the moment which isn't too bad.

August

Hi there, in any given 'normal' conditions, what trends would we expect in August in the upper North Island?

Hi there, we'd be normally

Hi there, we'd be normally expecting westerlies, showers and possibly a polar southerly at some point with temperatures by day a few degrees lower and temps at night about where they are. Maybe a remaining frost or two too. This year, however, we see the late July pattern continuing on into August which suggests milder weather - at least to begin with.

Kind regards

Mt Hutt

Going to south island and considering skiing at Mt Hutt while there. Any idea about the weather conditions for skiing between Thursday and Monday. Mt Hutt website shows lower temps than when I search "Mt Hutt" on this website. For some reason, if I search "Mt Hutt Ski" I get the forecast for Rakaia, which appears to be close to the coast!

G'day there Conditions are

G'day there

Conditions are looking quite good, mainly sunny. On Sunday expect thickening high cloud then Monday looks a little wet, but in Mt Hutt's case this will probably turn to some snow which isn't bad. It's not much, perhaps an extra 5 to 10cm of snow at most but Mt Hutt will need it as it hasn't been a spectacular season for snow so far. The last lot of wet weather we had in Canterbury provided a much needed boost re snow up there and hopefully that will see your trip out ok.

Winds are looking light even up high on the mountain top so that's good.

Not sure re the website query. Is this the page you get?

https://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/location/Mount%2520Hutt%2C%2520Rakaia

Even though it says Mount Hutt, Rakaia.... it will more then likely be for the Mount Hutt Ski area looking at those forecasted temperatures, high's of only 0 to 4 degrees and overnight lows all in the negatives.

Good luck for your trip!

Cheers
Aaron

Yes, that's the page I got

Yes, that's the page I got when I put in Mt Hutt Ski. Thanks for the quick and helpful reply. I have packed our skis and snowboard and we will be heading there tomorrow! Will most likely ski/board on Thursday and Friday, but have the option of Sunday and Monday too. Great website and video forecasts.

Long range forecast for August

Hi there Would you at WW have a rough idea what the month of August might look like for Dunedin? More like winter or the same mild temps? You all are the weather people of choice for me. No drama, scare tactics, or show pony performances like the Government's co-horts Thank you for you Jess

Hi there Jess, wow what a

Hi there Jess, wow what a lovely message to get, thank you :)   At this stage we're not seeing a major wintry change for Dunedin.  In fact the theme of mild weather looks likely to continue on into August with high pressure kicking the month off (at this stage). We see no major change in July's weather pattern which means drier than average and milder for Dunedin. Of course August can be a very chaotic month and so a winter storm is always on the cards, but right now we see no significant change in sight to this current weather pattern. Really appreciate your support for our free public service :)

Cheers

Hey there

Hey is there any Cold fronts on there way for south island like Christchurch etc?

Hi there Perhaps not till

Hi there

Perhaps not till late July or early August, even then there's nothing that drastic looking in the pipeline for around then. Is looking quite settled.

Barometric pressure reading influenced by altitude?

Flick from Queenstown 310 m asl, to Dunedin (sea level?) on a given day Pressure (Q) is 1012 hpa and (D) is 1008 hpa I expected to see Queenstown lower due to its higher elevation; about 1 hpa per 8 metre; I wonder if Queenstown ever has 1012 hpa barometric pressure, as reported on this site? Graham

Hi Graham I would have

Hi Graham

I would have expected Queenstown to be lower in pressure also most of the time, perhaps a particular station you were looking at may not be calibrated correctly?

Then again from memory stations higher up in elevation should be calibrated to act as if they were at sea level so there could well have been a sea level reading difference of 4 hpa between Dunedin and Queenstown on that particular day.

Hope that helps!

Cheers
Aaron

Barometric pressure reading influenced by altitude?

Hi Aaron A very helpful answer; many thanks, I was not aware of a convention for non sea level stations reporting with a local height correction factor. It makes good sense. I've seen barometers in mountaineer huts; if you can't tell whether the reading is high or low for the station, you can still see whether the glass is rising or falling, which has its uses. cheers Graham

How many minutes of light have we gained since the shortest day .

Hi thereSunset for

Hi there

Sunset for Wellington NZ on the 22nd June 2019 was 4.59pm, this is the date for NZ's shortest day.

Sunset for Wellington NZ on the 22nd July 2019 is 5:16pm.

So we will have gained an extra 17 minutes of light at sunset today since NZ's shortest day! :)

auckland thunder

I heard some thunder here in auckland today. which was unexpectedly? will there be more?

Hi there, a couple of

Hi there, a couple of isolated thunderstorms in the upper North Island this afternoon as the mild sub-tropical northerly turned cooler westerly. It will be cooler tonight and into the weekend so thunderstorms are less likely although some more heavy downpours are possible.

Last night Auckland

Hi last night the warning for Auckland was strong winds gusting 90km with possible thunderstorms but nothing really happened thankyou

Hi there, yes MetService

Hi there, yes MetService provides warnings which taxpayers fund. WW completely ignores these warnings due to the failure rate of accuracy and was why Civil Defence in Auckland hired our services for several years to reduce their false alarms. Sadly, we're back to the original problem of near continuous false alarms with absolutely no accountability.
