um metservice

metservice has a moderate risk for thunderstorms for auckland tommorow but your forecast says patchy rain. and metservice also says in their video that wednesday will mainly be dry. while your forecast says thunderstorms im confused here.

If we always matched

If we always matched MetService there would be no need for our service.

Kind regards finding the one that is most accurate for you.

Te aroha Weather Saturday 30th

Hi, could you please tell me the what the max temperature in Te Aroha was in the hours between 12 noon and 6pm or the max temperature recorded that day.

Hi there, you'll need to

Hi there, you'll need to contact Government Agency NIWA for that sorry. They have tax funded weather obs in Te Aroha but refuse to openly share that tax funded data - which is why the Commerce Commission is now investigating them! So send Niwa an email with your question.

Kind regards

Auckland 7th dec

I’m really worried about the thunderstorms that looking likely here on the 7th. Is this likely to change? Have an outdoor function on the 7th in south auckland.

Hi there, it's too early to

Hi there, it's too early to lock in thunderstorms that far out - will have a better idea in few days time how bad (or good) Saturday looks. Right now we know we have the ingredients to make thunder, but timing isn't accurate this far out - neither is exactly placement. So watch this space and keep an eye on the hourly % of rain in our 10 day forecasts :)

7th December

hi my kids having birthday party outdoor in Tauranga on the 7th dec but im worry about the storm coming?! will it pass before 7th?? and what weather will be? Thanks

Hi there The 7th of Dec is

Hi there

The 7th of Dec is currently looking dry for Tauranga. Mostly sunny with some high cloud, light WNW winds.

High's in the early 20's.

But you are talking about a day that is 8 or so days out so things can change in that time frame. Keep an eye on these maps: https://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/forecast-maps/rain

You can zoom in and using the drop down menu to skip to a certain point in the future, you can see the areas of rain represented by shaded areas of colour. Lighter colours represent light rainfall or only the odd shower, the more dramatic reds and oranges represent heavier rain.

If you have nothing over you colour wise then presumably it should be dry! Those maps will keep updating as the 7th draws near so keep checking them if you like to get the most up to date info.

Down pours in central north island

When will these afternoon downpours stop next week... The week after?

These downpour type

These downpour type thunderstorms are for today and on Saturday then they stop. There may be further wet weather coming after that for the Central North Island but the cloud build up / heavy downpour type showers have their last day tomorrow.

Hi, is rain really forecast

Hi, is rain really forecast everyday for the next 2 weeks in Auckland? There are a lot of events going on leading up to christmas, is December going to be a wash out and stormy? Even on the weather channel website December is looking grim and much wetter than the dry you say we have now entered. Thanks.

Hi there Keep an eye on our

Hi there

Keep an eye on our Auckland forecasts for weather coming up regarding Auckland.

I'm sure there will be a few dry periods within the next 2 weeks.

As for early December, fronts look to be barreling through from time to time over the next week or so. The weather is coming from the west so Auckland cops it at times, unlike Canterbury and other eastern regions which have mountain ranges to the west to help block wet weather.

Beyond that we'll have to wait and see, I deal with mainly the next 5 days. Can do 10 days but starts to get a little unreliable.

Southern Ocean storm

Hi guys Will this storm affect Dunedin? it kind of looks as if we may be less affected than others wind-wise? Please let me know if you can, I know its still a few days out so may not have all the details yet. Have a sports event and want to know. Have always used your site as you have the clearest and most accurate forecast than any other. Thanks for the awesome work you do!!

Hi there, thanks for the

Hi there, thanks for the feedback and question :) Dunedin is affected by it to some degree but the airflow will mean the Southern Alps absorbs a lot of the hit. Gales possible for a time but looking mostly dry. The bulk of the rain will be on the West Coast.

Cheers :)

Re/Met service .

Hi guys. I see Met/service has issued a server thunder storm watch for the BOP and surrounding areas. When you check their rain radar map there doesn't seem to be much happening around those areas at all.Do they not check that before they make an announcement like that. Here's another example of poor forecasting.Tauranga showers this morning then clearing in the afternoon. It's been fine all morning so far.I've lost count of how many times they make these forecast's.It just goes to show the waste of millions of dollars of tax payers money than goes' into poor weather forecasting.Good on you guys putting out the 3 month outlook.I think Met Service is still trying to find a powerful enough computer to work it out. IBM WATSON ROCKS

Hi there It's a watch, so

Hi there

It's a watch, so it's a "watch, wait and see" approach. It's a forecast as to what could happen, you won't see any thunderstorms on radar right now but keep an eye on things mid to late afternoon. Isolated showers have started to develop about inland ranges / hills of BOP. Thunderstorms do look possible for inland parts of the North Island today and these types of thunderstorms can lead to very heavy downpours so it's a good move to keep the public up to date with what could be coming up this afternoon. When things are cracking and a storm is happening, if it meets warning criteria then it can be upgraded to a warning about where it's going etc. You might be getting the terms confused a little but that's all good. An outlook is the first step, watch the second and then warning the final step in regards to thunderstorms. The first two are still forecasts in their purest sense then a warning is when things are actually happening.

As for the showers this morning not sure there, I've got it wrong at times that's for sure so won't be casting any stones that's for sure! lol. We are all trying to do our best.

Keep an eye on thunderstorm potential for inland parts of the North Island today, could be exciting! Hopefully not to detrimental to many.

Cheers
Aaron

Hastings weather

I'm curious about the location of your temperature guage as it is so different from Met service temperatures. I was a Met service user until they changed their web design, now they have less information, in a confusing garbled mess. They also eliminated historical information, which I used frequently to plan future trips around our beautiful country. Do you have historical Information available?

I agree

The new Met Service website is awful. I used to be able to see everything at a glance, including tides....it’s so painful now.

Hi there, you're not the only

Hi there, you're not the only one having issues with the new MetService site so welcome along to WeatherWatch :)

We have quite a few Hastings observations (click the image to load our observations page).

As for historical - the NZ Government blocks open data (in other words, MetService and Niwa take all our taxes, build weather stations with it for their own profits, then block any of the taxpayers from openly using that data they originally paid for. (no other country on earth does it this way). So it means we have limited historical data...FOR NOW. We are working with IBM to change this - and the Commerce Commission is now investigating this bad behaviour from MetService and Niwa, so we hope to be able to share more data NZers have already paid for in the near future. They are holding on to the data because they cannot compete with ideas and innovation - it's a way to hold us back.

Praise

Hi, I've always gone to Metservice for an easy-to-follow, basic, 'this is the high, this is the low, is there any chance of rain' -type forecast. Recently, they changed their website, and in the feedback tab I gave them the honest opinion that their website was dreadful, not intuitive, far too busy, hard to find anything, and pondered why they felt the need to go to such a ridiculous format. I've now found your website - and this is my new go to. It's uncluttered, and logical. Thank you!

Good morning and thanks very

Good morning and thanks very much for giving us a go. It's the third time in a decade MetSerivce has spent millions revamping their look. At first we used to complain about what a waste of public money that was - now we enjoy gaining new followers from their changes :)  Glad to have your support!!

7 December

We have an outdoor event around 3pm out in clevedon Auckland. Do you think it is going to be sunny? I’m getting really worried about rain or this storm coming through!

Hi there, this storm will

Hi there, this storm will have passed by then - and even next week when it's near NZ it's unlikely to affect Auckland too much. All the best and keep an eye on our 10 day forecasts :)

Wind

Is it normal for these high winds in christchurch at present?

Not common like every day or

Not common like every day or anything but in the big scheme of things Christchurch does get strong NW winds from time to time, especially in the spring. So yeah it's fine.

past rainfall

can i see how much rain has fallen over the past couple of weeks

Hi there That depends where

Hi there

That depends where for exactly. If you go to the metservice website, each center has a section called "past weather". You can click on that and find info for the last 30 days.

Any more then that and you will need to contact Metservice directly or NIWA.

Hoep that helps.

Hi there, when does

Hi there, when does weatherwatch think summer begins, as you said in your video that next week is still spring so does that mean summer is late this year? (later than Dec 1st or is it not summer then anyway according to you) Also with this storm coming next week, is December normally a stormy month?

Hi and thanks for the

Hi and thanks for the questions. In NZ there is no single day that is the "official" start to a season. The meteorological start is on December 1st, the astrological start is Dec 22 this year and Mother Nature has already brought summer temperatures and summer rainfall into some regions, although much of the South Island is still caught up in a spring pattern (which is fairly normal as the Southern Ocean is stormy until late December). To get a December storm in NZ is fairy common - but the month isn't usually overly unsettled with more high pressure rolling in.

Next week the storm in the Southern Ocean is big - but still a big chunk of NZ may not be overly impacted severely with more hot, sunny, weather in some places.

Always seems hotter

Why does the forecast for Hastings always seem to be too low or TV3 gets it wrong? Forecast today on TV is sunny and 25, but on here some cloud and 22? It’s cloudy and very cool ATM. And NNE apparently. Now that I don’t have the Metservice app any more and I’m missing my satellite and rain radar.. they should have made subtle changes over time, business 101?

Easy solution - just use our

Easy solution - just use our forecast for Hastings instead? Or even your suburb within Hastings. There's a reason why we exist :)

7 Dec

Hello! I saw the video about the first week of Dec. We have an outdoor party on 7 Dec, 1pm on the North Shore of Auckland. Will it be pretty windy or is it possible it will have calmed down by then.

G'day there 7th of December

G'day there

7th of December is quite a we way away but currently it's looking like just a light westerly, so hopefully yes conditions will be good for you then.

You guys actually rock -

You guys actually rock - thanks for replying so fast. We pay for metservice but it's you who answers - and so quick. Thank you, I'm happy with that. Had visions of hurricane style winds :-) will keep checking obviously.

breezy winds for Auckland

I am tired of the cool south west wind which has been hanging around South Auckland for weeks and drops the temperature around 6 degrees below summer time is for shorts not longs but it feels a lot cooler When will we get 27 degrees in South Auckland every other year but wind chill seems around 19 or so I am ashamed for people to see my white legs we are nearly into summer but its still feels cool last year we had 27 degrees what is robbing us. finally I wish to thank you for your expertise for giving us amazing updates.

breezy winds for Auckland

Its like the Scottish tundra highlands, bleak and miserable.

Thanks for the nice comment!

Thanks for the nice comment! :)

Auckland will always / often have breezy southwesterly winds, much like Christchurch can get a fresh easterly to spoil a nice summers day.

Only thing is Christchurch has the Southern Alps to the west giving warm days when the wind comes from that direction.

Hopefully a nice still day coming your way soon :)

Cheers
Aaron

ha ha the weather forecasts

I used the "old metservice" site for my boating forecasts around auckland and was quite happy with that foremat. I have sent a complaint about the new layout. Can you carry on the old one Thank you, Warren Crook.

Cold nights

Hi there, why is it still so cold at night this late in the year in the Auckland region? last night metservice recorded 6.8 degrees, is that the average night temperature for late November and when can we expect to start having milder nights? I see on the forecast that milder nights are coming, but we haven't even seen the 13 degrees that has been forecast this past week yet. Thanks for all the great and hard work you guys are all doing and am very interested to hear more news about the seasonal forecast you talked about the other day!

Hi there, we had a bit of

Hi there, we had a bit of sou'west change this week which did pull in some colder air. Hard to notice it during the day with all the sunshine, but at night with clear skies and light winds the colder air is sinking. The South Island has already had this colder air flushed away by warm nor'westers, the North Island will see the overnight lows lift up this weekend.

Here's tonight's map for you - and thanks for the support, we look forward to growing our forecasting services in 2020 starting with seasonal/climate updates which we will put our for the first time next week. It's designed to be quite simplistic and we look forward to feedback on it as we progress through 2020 :)
