For over a decade WeatherWatch.co.nz has loved to receive your comments and questions here, however we need to tighten up on our rules of reply so that we can spend more time focusing on forecasting.

Before you ask a question please ensure you have read our latest news stories, weather video and specially made infographics on our homepage, as we will no longer be answering questions that are already generally answered there, or answered already in our hourly or 10 day forecasts at both WeatherWatch.co.nz or RuralWeather.co.nz

Weather pattern

Hi Trending weather pattern at moment suggests a cool if not cold summer with southwest winds dominating while high pressure zones remain positioned slightly more north than might normally occur for this time of year. Any comments on the prognosis and pattern Regards John

so not like summer

I live in Woodend and am wondering why we are getting these cold winds, and gusty winds, looking at the next week or so, its all easterlies and southerlies-what has happened to summer :(

It happens, most years are

It happens, most years are different from each other. Hopefully summer finds it's groove perhaps end of January or February.

Hi there, In your summer

Hi there, In your summer forecast you say normal temperatures are forecast, however, it feels like September here in west Auckland. Are there any signs of summer coming? (can't see any in your 10 day forecast and that will take us almost halfway through January) This constant sou'west wind in December has been so chilly, when will it stop? This has to be the coldest summer i can ever remember.

Hi there, thanks for the

Hi there, thanks for the message and feedback about our new seasonal forecasts. Temperatures in early December were fairly mild and leaned above normal for a time, but you're right, we have this nagging sou'west wind which is dropping temps lately. Both daytime and night time temperatures lift up next week though, thanks to lighter winds and warmer airflows. Tonight will be colder than average just like today is.

We expect January to generally be about normal too (which means we don't expect this pattern to completely stop or dramatically change). Hottest weather will be in the north east of the region.

The warmer weather at the start and even of December will likely balance the month out to be about average - but we won't know for sure until we reach January and government agency Niwa confirms the public stats.

We're also publishing our January outlook and updated Summer outlook on Monday - so keep an eye out for that.

For others who may want to see our current climate/seasonal outlook, you can find it here: https://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/content/new-december-summer-climate-outlook-new-zealand-8-maps

Christchurch temprature on new years

Wow 34c is forecast for Christchurch on new years day.

Metservice say 32 and NIWA

Metservice say 32 and NIWA say 26 It's possible whoever does the ChCh temps, might be a little optimistic. I dare say that some suburban home weather stations, (in particular one that can be as high as 5 above the actual), might reach that if it does get near the 30s, but it's only the 'official' temp that counts!

Replying

Just after I commented on that I looked on Metservice (I dont bother checking NIWA) And it said 32 and then when i checked back here and looked at hourly forecast for new years it looked the highest temp was 29c so we will just have to wait and see

is there gonna be a heatwave

are we gonna get any heatwaves this summer?

Possibly. All depends on

Possibly. All depends on airflows from Aussie in the weeks ahead.

Summer

Hey there. When will summer peak and be it’s dryest in Invercargill? I just moved down here and not liking the no sun! It’s crazy coming from Nelson which hot sun almost every day to here where there’s only about 1 partly sunny day a week! Thanks!

Hi there, sadly we did

Hi there, sadly we did forecast in November that December would be cooler and wetter than average. You can find our full summer forecast for Southland here - https://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/content/new-december-summer-climate-outlook-new-zealand-8-maps and we'll be updating this next week.

No chance of rain

LOL, A small amount of rain fell earlier this evening in New Lynn.

More endless battleship grey in Auckland- looks like summer peaked in November

A whole lot of wind

I'm keen to review historic wind data, even if it's only over the past 24hr, but being able to zoom down to a graph of specific few hours of intensity and direction at specific times. I recall seeing graphed direction data in the good old days, but it'd be great to select your time period, say 0745-1133 and then be able to have a slider (or a play/pause button with a variable multiplier) to see how it occurred so I can relate that back to "my activity" usually a cycle ride. I use Strava App to record my activity, and using a link from within their website, I'm able to use a function called flybys. This can be played back to see where you were on the map, in relation to everyone else, at any specific time. Usual default play back is 60× but slow down or speed up as required. Worth a look. But being able to play that back at same time as wind data would be truly FANTASTIC

Hi there, in 2020 we're

Hi there, in 2020 we're adding new options for people to capture historical data and forecast data + alerting to our phone. It's a work in progress but hopefully we can get to where you're wanting to go at some point in the next 12 months. Historical data in NZ is hard to access due to unfair behaviour by both Niwa and MetService and is why the Commerce Commission has launched an enquiry into them: www.stuff.co.nz/business/116203356/commerce-commission-investigating-niwa-and-metservice

Hi there

Is looking mainly dry, perhaps the risk of an isolated shower late afternoon / evening this coming Wed / Thu as written  in our forecasts above. Thursday carries the slightly higher risk of a shower otherwise mainly dry.

Rain will come when it comes but in the short term, mainly dry.

Thanks very much, Merry Christmas to you too!

Thank you so much. at least christmas day looking mostly dry besides from a isolated shower.

Wind in Kaeo

Do you think the wind will die down in Kaeo this summer? Historically it’s either windy all summer, or still it summer. This year so far it looks windy. Thank you.

Hi there

It'll calm down at some point but when that will be I'm not sure. I tend to stick with forecasting the next 5 to 6 days ahead and leave it at that.

Hopefully it calms down for you soon! :)

Sunny and warm Christmas for Auckland (North shore)

Hi there, I was wondering alot of websites and different forecast are indicating a warmer than average day for christmas (24 °C), is it likely that it will get any hotter in Norhtern and Western areas on Christmas day. Also, I find that the forecasts on this website are quite accurate, so I am impressed with how often it is right on point with the actual outcome of what the weather turns out to be. I used this website for christmas last year and I thought it was a good indicator of what the Christmas and boxing day outlooks were. Hope you have a great christmas break, looking foward to seeing how nice the weather is here in North Shore for christmas from, Zane

Hi Zane The forecast is

Hi Zane

The forecast is basically the forecast so 24 it is. There will be variables across the Auckland region. It may get a fraction warmer in northern suburbs perhaps? Western areas may be a touch cooler if anything due to a west to southwest breeze.

Thanks for the kind words, you have a great Christmas! :)

Christmas in Dunedin

LOL thanks guys the weather forecast for Dunedin is hilarious. Have a safe and wonderful Christmas and New Year!! Thank you for all the great work you have done throughout the year with your spot on forecasts!!

yes its is funny

it made me laugh too. better than metservice forecast. they have no sense of humer at all. weatherwatch.nz forecast can make me laugh sometimes. the people who operates it definatly have some sense of humer.

dunedin

the dunedins forecast for christmas day just made me crack up. you guys are the best weather forecasters ever.

I was just going to comment

I was just going to comment as such on the Dunners 25 Dec forecast. You all are awesome at WW. Merry Christmas to you from Dunedin!!!

Bit of a change in more ways

Bit of a change in more ways than one today for Christchurch. WW was more into the dramatics than Metservice this time. For 2 days you warned of possible heavy showers, t/storms and small hail from midday courtesy of an active front. They only mentioned chance of heavy showers. Reality; Change arrived on cue late AM but it was a fizzer. Quite a wind for a while but only some drizzly rain that barely dampened the road, nothing else. Pleasant now late afternoon with light winds. You say in a comment the so called active front will bring heavy rain to Wellington and the lower Nth Island about now. How does that work? But I also thank you for the great easy to read weather info and the frequently reliable forecasts. WW plays a part in my day with 3-5 daily visits. Cheers.

Hi thereThe key is in your

Hi there

The key is in your answer, warned of "possible heavy showers / thunder". It was a possibility, not a guarantee. I live in Christchurch and noticed a bit more then drizzle with the change as it moved through.

And just to note MS I believe didn't have a chance of thunder for Wellington and changed it to be more in line with our forecast.

I'm not being critical of that it's a good move but in this game you win some you lose some. Hopefully win more then we lose all forecasters would hope, there are many varying levels to this though.

Thanks for checking in anyway, Merry Christmas!

Aaron

auckland - west, south, north and east etc

Kia ora, What are the chances of getting weather forecasts for the different areas of Auckland... as it is a huge area to cover... It could be raining in south Auckland but sunny on the westside.. and you only have it up for Auckland..! Kinda needs to be a bit more precise these days... Thanks and yep I do appreciate your great work predicting the weather for us all :-) Merry xmas to you and all your team :-)

Kia Ora and thanks heaps for

Kia Ora and thanks heaps for your message. We actually already cover all these areas in two ways. 1) We were the first forecaster in Auckland to live track weather in any suburb - so if a major storm appears in your suburb we'll be live tracking it in our main Auckland forecast, unlike any other NZ forecaster. 2) We have detailed forecasts for your specific location - not just west, east, north, south, but specifically where you are. Combine the two and you have a great forecast for Auckland. Yes Auckland is a large region, but it's a major mistake to split the city into North, South, East and West when the city is just 1km wide at one point. So WW covers the entire region every day - but get very specific when more intense weather appears within parts of the city/region.

Cheers and thanks so much for the support! Merry Christmas to you too :)

Is it going to start feeling a little bit like summer down here soon? It’s getting ridiculous the amount of rain and cold we have had for the past 2-3 months. Definitely the coldest and wettest summer I’ve ever seen in my 45 years!

Hi there, today is certainly

Hi there, today is certainly a miserable one for this time of year but we do have some better weather coming up. Tomorrow is warmer, calmer and drier. Christmas day looks a little cooler but should be dry :) Unfortunately your current set up does match our December and Summer outlook, that conditions will lean both wetter and cooler for you this summer. Here's the full info for you: www.weatherwatch.co.nz/content/new-december-summer-climate-outlook-new-zealand-8-maps

What’s it looking like for central Otago? We head up there for Christmas and even it’s not looking great weather!

Hey guys Any idea of what

Hey guys Any idea of what NYE is looking like for the Auckland region? I see some life coming to the Tropics up by Fiji around the 29th. Any chance of that heading towards NZ or will the big highs coming in from Australia push that away? Long way off but thoughts would be great. Thanks :)

Best thing to do since we are

Best thing to do since we are so far out is for me to point you in the direction of these maps:

http://www.weathermap.co.nz/forecast-maps

Click on "Rain" then scroll through the drop down menu to NYE, you can see what type of weather we may expect. Currently it's looking rather anticyclonic and settled. But that could change...... hence it's best to keep an eye on those maps :)
