New 2020 rules for asking questions:

For over a decade WeatherWatch.co.nz has loved to receive your comments and questions here, however we need to tighten up on our rules of reply so that we can spend more time focusing on forecasting.

Before you ask a question please ensure you have read our latest news stories, weather video and specially made infographics on our homepage, as we will no longer be answering questions that are already generally answered there, or answered already in our hourly or 10 day forecasts at both WeatherWatch.co.nz or RuralWeather.co.nz

Camping in Whananaki 16th - 19th Jan

Hi We have a campsite booked for the 16th - 19th Jan, what are the chances of fine weather - will we get a chance to get the boat out - struggling with the current winds!! Thanks Kelly

Hi there You may be in luck.

Hi there

You may be in luck. Long range models are picking it to be quite aniticyclonic around then and mainly settled.

It is 10 days away though and in the weather world things can change in that time frame, but in your case lets hope it holds out.

Cheers

Wind

How accurate are your Kaiteriteri forecasts? Sitting here in a tent as the wind howls and threatens to blow the tent over and your page says we have a 0 km/hr sw.

Hi there, there's a

Hi there, there's a difference between the NOW data and the FORECAST data. Our forecasts are the most accurate in New Zealand but the NOW data comes from private weather stations (because the NZ Government currently blocks us access to tax funded data - see the recent news in our favour here: https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/money/2019/09/metservice-niwa-under-investigation-by-commerce-commission-for-anti-competitive-behaviour.html

But the forecast data has nothing to do with the current weather observations you are seeing - we don't have wind observations in every part of the country. You're better off to look at the hourly wind forecast in our free app our website to see when it's ramping up or dying down - it's very helpful for camping. Or try www.RuralWeather.co.nz which has the most detailed wind maps and graphs for free in NZ (please note it take 10 seconds or so to load the data first time, depending on your internet speeds) - there's a huge amount of info and graphs to help you there.

Finally, take a look at our news feed - we have extensive news and special wind maps in recent days about the incoming winds - also gales in exposed areas may bepossible next 48 hours. All the best in the tent!

Auckland Weather

Hi Guys, I’m finding the Auckland weather this summer absolutely disgusting. Feels like tail end of winter really . Is there any chance we will have a decent summer this year or has it peaked in late November/early December. It’s depressing to see these 19C highs after I’ve been back from my holiday in Brisbane. Thanks.

Hi there, thanks for the

Hi there, thanks for the question. The smoke from Australia and extra cloud and westerlies are helping drop the temperature and bring a gloomier/duller summer at times to the city. However early January can be unsettled and often mid to late January and February/March brings much more settled weather.

This year we're predicting a fairly average summer in Auckland - and average is just that...it's kinda average! You dont get as many of the big blue sky hot days. The next week ahead (as our news section covers) won't be very summer-like but things do improve by this coming Friday.

Auckland haze

Debate in this household (Clarks Beach) as to haze over Manukau Harbour obscuring Auckland. Photo of sun in afternoon did not indicate smoke, is that a component or is it perhaps airborne salt Thanks

Hi there, a good debate to

Hi there, a good debate to have! It's a bit of both. The gusty winds will be making for some salt/sea spray in the air, but we do also have a fair bit of very high level smoke still around the upper North Island - there may be a thicker wave coming in overnight/Sunday AM to some parts of NZ too, before a windy SW change stops that for the most part for early next week.

Dunedin wind

You have the wind in Dunedin at present at W 14 kp/h. What we have is a SW gale at over 100 kp/h. Is your reading taken indoors?

Hi there, unfortunately all

Hi there, unfortunately all the weather data NZers collectively tax fund is held up by Niwa and MetService so we cannot share it with you. Thankfully this past September the Commerce Commission launched an investigation into both Niwa and MetService for anti-competitive behaviour and possible abuse of market place power.

In the meantime, WW connects to hundreds of private weather stations across NZ - some have wind data, others do not. We're taking steps this year to make it easier for you to block stations you don't think best represent you - then you can select from others nearby on a map. We also hope the Commerce Commission does the right thing and enforces its own current rules which says the weather observations NZers all tax fund must be freely and openly available to share - here and elsewhere.

You can view the story here: www.newshub.co.nz/home/money/2019/09/metservice-niwa-under-investigation-by-commerce-commission-for-anti-competitive-behaviour.html

Hi there, thanks for your

Hi there, thanks for your news piece on the current set up. Just wondering if these southern ocean storms are closer to NZ than usual for this time of year and if so why. I'm guessing it is to do with the SAM being so negative for such a long time, but then that also begs the question why. Is it possibly partly linked to the SSW event last spring? Thanks in advance!

Hi there, yes the Southern

Hi there, yes the Southern Ocean is definitely very active. In part due to high pressure stuck over Australia and not drifting south, allowing these lows (and winds attached) to move up nearer/ove NZ. We were also wondering if this was linked to the SSW event last spring - that would certainly make a lot of sense as it was likely to make the storms surrounding Antarctica more unstable and perhaps a greater chance of them heading northwards over time. Also explains why Southland, the West Coast and Otago aren've having the usual summer heat.

Hope that is helpful! :)

Summer? More like middle of winter!

Will Invercargill get some warmer temps and sun nearing end of jan- feb. Thanks in advance as we are not meant to get sun and over 20° for as long as the forecast goes. Also is there a reason for this bad weather? It’s a the worst summer I’ve ever seen and we get warmer temps than 11° in winter!!

Hi there, yes the weather for

Hi there, yes the weather for Southland isn't very flash. It goes along with our climate forecast for January and summer. You can find our seasonal climate outlook here: www.weatherwatch.co.nz/content/new-january-3-month-climateseasonal-outlook-nz-8-maps

As for your current set up, it's not looking good next week if you want warmth BUT the good news is we do expect next Friday and next weekend to see summer heat return and highs into the 20s possible for you.

We've also just published why it's so windy and cool right now: www.weatherwatch.co.nz/content/windy-cooler-weather-nz-a-week-10-bullet-points-maps-explain-why

Good luck with some improvements soon!!

Historical data

Hi there, I’m hoping to use this website as an alternative to the horrible new layout in on the MetService page. What I am after is the historical data graphs? Ie, rainfall and temperature over the last month. Thanks Hayden

Hi Hayden, thanks for the

Hi Hayden, thanks for the support and glad to have you with us. We're improving our historical data, hopefully later this year. Sadly, MetService and Niwa haven't played nicely and even though NZers all collectively fund their existence neither MetService or Niwa will openly and freely share the data we all fund. This has lead (thankfully) to the Commerce Commission investigating them both: https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/money/2019/09/metservice-niwa-under-investigation-by-commerce-commission-for-anti-competitive-behaviour.html

We're doing our best to bring alternatives to NZ - so your support is very much needed. NZ is the only country on earth to have data funded by taxpayers, then blocked for free open use. This investigation directly looks at historical data. It's great to have your support!

Cheers
Philip Duncan

Thanks for the quick reply. I

Thanks for the quick reply. I really hope this investigation gets a result. The frustrating thing was that I like many others I know, expressed to MetService the changes were not user friendly and have now given it a good chance but it is actually still frustrating even though we are used to the change. A very weak response with obviously no intention of pleasing the masses was returned. All the best to WeatherWatch!

Thanks very much - we're

Thanks very much - we're hoping for some positive changes this year, regardless of how the ComCom ruling goes. We're investing in making more data available ourselves and building our own infrastructure (A bit like what Telstra had to do when Telecom had the monopoly with the telco industry).

Happy New Year to you, from us! :)

When are we due to get some easterly wind? I'd really like to get my kayak out with such a big swell

Hi there, we're going to see

Hi there, we're going to see the W to SW winds ramp up over the next week - but 9 days from now (next Sunday) we may see winds tilting N to NE for a few days. Keep an eye on our wind maps for 10 days of winds.

Smell

Hi can anyone else in Upper Hutt smell a unusual smell outside? It woke me up as it wafted through the window.

Too much cloud

Can you please tell me why there’s so much cloud in Aucklands west coast, this whole week we have been lucky to see the sun at 6pm till sunset! Surely the south westerlies should be clearing them away faster ?

Hi there, most of the cloud

Hi there, most of the cloud today has actually been Australian smoke/dust high in the atsmosphere giving the appearance of an overcast day. Actually today just has passing clouds and is mainly sunny. Over the next week or so we have plenty more cloudy days due to west to south west winds (which almost always bring clouds). The weather over the next week won't be as settled in Auckland with more wind and cloud coming in.

Invercargill temp!

Is Invercargill really meant to be down to 12° with rain for 3 days?! Honestly when are we going to get some decent weather!!

Hi there Ues these

Hi there

Ues these maps: https://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/forecast-maps/rain

Scroll through the various times and you can see the areas of rain or showers moving through (rain is typically the brighter looking blobs, showers often the lighter coloured areas). You can see when it will actually be dry or wet.

As for the temperatures, the modeled temperatures are a little low. I would add a degree or two to them. It isn't a perfect system yet but better then nothing. More or less I'd just take note that days with lower temperatures will be a bit cooler on average and days with higher temperatures a little warmer.

Rain vs shower

Hi! I have a question regarding your percentages for rain on your forecast charts. Often I see a prediction of 10% chance of rain, but in your forecast you talk of showers... Is the rain prediction an indication of significant rainfall? Is that talking of rainfall of 'over 1mm', 'over 5mm' or even maybe 'at least 10mm'? I've looked over your website but can't find any details regarding the above, but sorry for wasting your time if I have missed it. Thanks Phil for the awesome vids! I live on a rural property in Wellington and work outside as 'day job' also... I find your forecasts the best available! Good luck getting the radar too! Bex

Good morning Bex. The

Good morning Bex. The percentage relates to the chances of precipitation falling - precipitation being rain, showers, drizzle, snow, hail, sleet (moisture falling from the sky). 10% is a default setting when we can't say for sure it will be dry all day but there's a very good chance it will be. The percentage of rain does't relate to how much might fall although they do tend to go hand in hand. The higher the chance of rain the greater the chances of rain clouds in the area. We're upgrading our site next year and we'll be including amounts of rain into our forecasts too - and RuralWeather.co.nz already has this now. Have a great 2020, hope this has been some help at explaining!
Cheers

Phil D

P.s. By the way, we all tend to say "rain" when wet stuff falls from the sky, but technically a shower covers a small space, comes from a single cloud and lasts less than 30minutes. Rain covers a larger area, is generated from a large cloudy area and lasts more than 30 mins. A shower can produce more than rain can though. It's a tricky area to be clear in which is why having the radar to just 'see' what we're talking about will help a great deal.

Awesome explanation thanks

Awesome explanation thanks Phil! Although we have not had high temps down here we are in need of rain due to the persistent dry norwesters... but not on the 25th of this month (it's my wedding day hahahaha). Thanks again, you're a legend :)

Happy new year. here in auckland its been cloudy all day. and this past week there has been a lot of cloud. when will a full sunny day come?

Hi there, thanks for the

Hi there, thanks for the question. Happy New Year to you too! Unfortunately the current set up doesn't bode well for sunny days - we have windier, cloudier, weather about to move in. Auckland actually only gets about 5 days a year that are truly cloud free, so this is fairly normal weather. Sunniest weather in Auckland will be in the extreme eastern areas - like north of Orewa or down near the Hunua ranges. Sou'east and Southerly wind flows are usually Auckland's sunniest - but we have a lot of sou'westers about to move in which, while similar, are much cloudier.

Spooky light today

Agree..very weird light in Timaru. Almost like an eclipse. Feels like I'm going blind! People have talked about the Australia smoke, but is that really all this is?

Hi there - we have a cold

Hi there - we have a cold front moving up the South Island with varying clouds over Timaru - but yes take a look at our homepage story, it's very much due to smoke that it's so dark in the middle of the day.

Hi, does your prognosis mean

Hi, does your prognosis mean that we have gone straight from spring to autumn? feeling more and more autumnal these days, in fact it is more wintry now than autumn ever was last year. Does having such a wintry "summer" mean we are in for a really long winter? Thanks. Wishing you guys all the best for New year and 2020!

Hi there, take a look at our

Hi there, take a look at our lead story covering January and the next three months ahead. While not especially hot many places will be average temperturewise - or above normal. But there is also a decent portion of NZ that is averagr to cooler - and yes more like Spring and Autumn. You may find later in January and over Feb and March things are more summer like. But it's important to note that for over 10 years we've been saying summers and winters in NZ are both only about 2 months long - the rest is all an extended spring/autumn. :)

Cheers and wishing you a great 2020 - thanks for the support!
