How will cyclone Gita impact

How will cyclone Gita impact Christchurch in terms of wind or rain. Could there be flooding or damage.

We'll have more details on

We'll have more details on Monday - we're still trying to fine tune Christchurch and Canterbury (along with many other regions).

Gita affect Auckland?

Hi, Will Cyclone Gita cause gales, strong winds and flooding in Auckland?

Hi there, Cyclone Gita looks

Hi there, Cyclone Gita looks to brush Auckland on Tuesday with some gusty winds. Rain is less of an issue based on most forecast models. The winds could be gusty in some Auckland wind tunnels. Likely direction is N or NNE, then N to NW later on Tuesday. Sustained winds at this early stage could reach 45km/h with gusts into gale force and maybe up to 90km/h. If the low jogs a little further away winds won't be bad, if it jogs a little closer it could get windier.

You can see here how the damaging winds in purple are wrapped around the centre of Gita. Damaging winds are in purple.

This is the wind GUST map for Tuesday at 6pm across NZ. For Auckland it shows gusts may get into the gale force region (62km/h plus) for a time.

forecasting

Hi I live at Te Awaiti on the South Wairarapa coast , just North of Cape Palliser . The only decent forecasting We get is YR . Metservice are bloody useless cant even get a Marine forecast right most of the time . I have looked at Your site this morning and please , please get it right . Our Temps are recorded in Waipawa at Craggy Range Vineyard , thats up in Hawkes Bay , but maybe if You are based in Auckland then Geographical Knowledge of NZ will be lacking . During our Hot spell just recently We recorded a day of 38.4 degrees oh yes I here You say another one going off , Our sensor is continually in shade with good air flow around it . now this is some constructive critisicim ....... the sort We learn from , if You are forecasting for NZ then include NZ if not then please say this forecast is for selected areas only . If You want to assist us in setting up a weather system for our part of NZ then that would be appreciated and You could have the feed back via the internet . We live in an area that according to a former weather forecaster is regarded as challenging to say the least . someone needs to take up the challenge ......... will it be Weatherwatch ? many thanks Ed Holter

Hi there - the forecasts we

Hi there - the forecasts we have for your specific place (down to a 500 metre grid) are accurate - especially the % of rain, wind directions and temps. The current conditions come from a separate network of private sensors - most are accurate but around 10% are not. These personal weather stations aren't part of the forecasting we use. We have a deal with YR to share their data too but currently we don't, instead we are using the Weather Company - which is owned by IBM. We are now an official IBM business partner using the world's most powerful weather super computer, the IBM Watson computer which is updating your local forecasts every 15 minutes. YR is based in Norway. IBM is here in New Zealand.

We have this forecast here for Te Awaiti, is this close to you? If you're using our free app then the "find my location" setting will automatically find a forecast for where you are standing or sitting (providing you have internet or phone connection).

Cheers and thanks for your feedback

High temp forecast no reflected in next 24 hours chart

Hi - just wondering which is more accurate - your forecast high or the temps in the next 24 hours chart? The forecast high is 26 for Dunedin but the highest temp in the 24 hours’ chart is 22.

In this instance usually the

In this instance usually the forecast high is more accurate as that's adjusted by us personally.

Forecast tomorrow afternoon

Hi we are in ashhurst north east palmy, but on palmy side of rahines by the manawatu gorge. We dont always get exactly same weather as the city. We are hoping to have my sons birthday at a park tomorrow aft. What chance do we have for showers? MetService says 0 mls rain for aft, where you indicate wet... ? Thanks

Hi there It looks to be

Hi there

It looks to be mainly dry but there is the risk of a few isolated showers late afternoon / evening. So there is a chance it could be dry, a chance there could be a few showers move through around that time, sorry I can't be more specific but it's the type of weather moving through that is quite unpredictable, not stormy just unpredictable.

Hope the party goes well!

weather

I think you may need to re access your Tuesday forecast for Westport as it appears Gita will make landfall there.

Hi there, our Westport

Hi there, our Westport forecast is updated every 15 minutes. At this stage one model picks Gita will make landfall there, the majority still place it in Cook Strait or further north. It's unclear how the weather will exactly pan out in Westport at this stage - the mountains and ranges will play a big role in the severe weather on top of the cyclone. Until we can lock in where landfall will be it's hard to be any more specific and at this stage all western areas are at some risk.

Kind regards
WW

Hi there, it's too early for us to know but the current pattern sees no big changes. NZ has a mix of highs and humid downpours around for the rest of this month which may spill over into March.

Is there an issue with your maps? It is not showing any details. Thanks

Hi there, MetOcean is aware

Hi there, MetOcean is aware of the fault with the maps feed, it appears to be out of their hands too and looks like a fault with Google Mapping as it's playing up on their websites too. They are working on a fix. If you zoom in or out it may make some maps appear.

Saturday 17/02

Hi there, Will Saturday 17/2 be affected by the impending Cyclone hitting Tonga today? I understand ity is not meant to hit Auckland till Sunday/early next week. Early I know, but Can we expect rain on Saturday or will it be a pleasant day like Thursday and Friday?

The forecast on our site says

The forecast on our site says "Sunny areas and increasing high cloud", go check out the forecasts for Auckland by clicking on Auckland. That currently still stands, you can also use these maps here to see how Auckland is shaping up for Saturday - http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/forecast-maps/rain

It shows some rain to the north but currently Auckland is dry, rain moves in overnight / on Sunday etc.

Metservice predicting 93.6mm of rain for Auckland on Tue 13/2/18

Metservice predicting 93.6mm of rain for Auckland on Tue 13/2/18 - Found by clicking on 'Auckland' then seeing their "Rain in mm (previous 2 hour accumulation)" forecast. What's your thoughts Weatherwatch? Usually Metservice overestimate the rainfall by 50% on their site, and love to forecast the extreme worst case scenario as clickbait, but even over 45mm of rain seems a bit crazy for a forecast tomorrow?!

Hi there, the rain that

Hi there, the rain that affected Auckland on Sunday will tonight drift back into Auckland - but just like we saw on Sunday it's a mix of drizzle and heavy downpours. Some areas, especially in the west around the ranges could see totals of 50 to 80mm, but there may be many other suburbs that have half that amount. It's a tricky set up. We're working to add rainfall totals to our website at the moment which will be for your specific location, not a general city forecast.

App vs Website?? Why Different?

Heya My iphone app and your website are showing quite different things for auckland over the next week or so? For instance: Website - Saturday 17th Feb Sunny areas and increasing high cloud, light Nor'East winds. NE 15km 20% Chance of Rain App - Saturday 17th Feb Considerable cloudiness with occasional rain. E 14km. 40% Chance of Rain It's mostly different for every day this week... I generally use the app but just checked online today and was confused. Why would they not be the same? Thanks

Hi there, which location are

Hi there, which location are you specifically using? If your app is selected to 'find my location' then it will be creating a forecast for your precise location which may be slightly different to the website that is finding a forecast for the location you searched for. The data on the app comes from our website so anything you search for should be indentical - but the 'find my location' means it's even more specific to where you are. Let us know if that helps - otherwise we'll look into it incase we have a bug in the system!

App is set to Auckland and

App is set to Auckland and clicking through to Auckland on website also...

Is the App using The Weather

Is the App using The Weather Company forecasts or the older Wunderground ones? We can't replicated this issue at our end so just trying to work out what is happening here. It's possible your app hasn't refreshed. If you like you can contact us directly at news@weatherwatch.co.nz and we can take a closer look.

Curiosity

Is there a difference between 'party cloudy' and 'mostly sunny'?

Not a huge difference but

Not a huge difference but 'partly cloudy' is likely to be just a tad cloudier than a 'mostly sunny' day. For our WeatherWatch made forecasts "mostly sunny' would mean the sky is generally clear but not perfectly clear. We don't tend to write "partly cloudy" in our WeatherWatch.co.nz forecasts, instead we usually say "a mix of sun and cloud" when it's a bit 50/50.

Cyclones

Who chooses the names of cyclones? I know they are alphabetical during a season, but can we submit a name for consideration?

Hi there, in our part of the

Hi there, in our part of the world it's a little confusing as we have three cyclone authorities (instead of just one for all of North and Central America for example). If you draw a line north and south halfway down the Tasman Sea storms that form west of it (160E) are named by Australian authorities and east of it named by Fiji. Unsure about if you can submit names sorry, but you can read all about it here:

Good Morning, A few days ago

Good Morning, A few days ago you were talking about a large high moving in over the country, including the North Island. What has happened to that? All you talk about now is rain, and a possible cyclone. Looking at your forecast, there is rain forecast to some degree, for every single day until the 20th Feb now. If that eventuates, that would surely make this February the wettest on record? Are there no highs forming that could move on to the country?

Good morning :) The high is

Good morning :) The high is still coming in and while it's quite large it's also quite weak - rain clouds draped narrowly over the North Island affecting some people and nothing to really push it away. The South Island will benefit most from this high, in fact sunny weather with daytime temps up to 30 degrees possible for some areas this week. But the tropical air feeding in is definitely the culprit for the rain in the north. As for the cyclone, it's actually tracking north of this higher pressure over NZ and lying out to our east. Should be another high (a bigger one) next week after the remnants of Gita have moved through (probably one week from now). Not sure about records yet, still more than half the month to get through.
Kind regards
WW

Map for Wednesday shows the high pressure belt over NZ and to our north east - cyclone well to the north (tracking westwards) north of the high.

Why does the weather company

Why does the weather company have a radical variance between what the rain maps are saying and what they say? For next Saturday it said before clear now it's saying rain and the maps are showing its clear. I think the weather company just likes to put rain and showers on the forecasts to annoy people. I for one am not a fan of them myself I believe the rain maps over anything they say. Are their forecasts not moderated?

Hi there, the Weather Company

Hi there, the Weather Company relies on data that uses many more sources than just the weather maps (which is one source from the US Government). Rather than focus on the weather icons, focus on the % (percentage) of rain in their long range forecasts - there's no forecaster on earth that has high accuracy for long range and next weekend Cyclone Gita is likely to be near the NZ area which is why there is even more uncertainty. Their forecasts are in fact moderated and worked on by meteorologists who are specifically working now to make them even more accurate for us - and we have plans to improve the icons (which are too clunky and don't often reflect the forecast so well - that's a work in progress by our small team to improve that). So once again, focus on the % of rain for long range forecasts as that's the most reliable indicator for rain or dry. Their data has been independently tested and is proven to be more accurate than the NZ Government forecasts you pay for via tax funding - we are providing a free service. Feel free to shop around.

Rain for Sunday in Orewa

Hi, I'm going to be running the Orewa Beach Half Marathon on Sunday. It's obviously going to be a very wet day, but can you tell if the heavy falls are likely to be in the morning or afternoon? Thanks!

HI there, it's a hard one to

HI there, it's a hard one to answer as the rain comes and goes but the latest modelling suggests it will get heavier during the day/into the afternoon. Keep an eye on the rain maps as they are updated every few hours. All the best for Sunday!

Rain on the Kapiti Coast

Hello, Kapiti Coast seems to have missed out on many of the "heavy" rain forecasts for some time, except for the storm last Thursday. It has not rained here now for three months, apart from the odd day here and there. Any explanation why the rain is not falling here? Thank you

Hi there, yes you've been in

Hi there, yes you've been in a bit of a shadow for the big rain. Too far south to get the northern downpours and during Fehi the rain bands again missed your area (from South Taranaki to Kapiti) - this was mostly due to the South Island ranges getting in the way. It's really just been bad luck. It looks a little more positive for you in the coming days, so fingers crossed!

Re/ the live observations map.

Hi team.Do you have any idea when the PWS live observations map will be corrected. It would be nice to see it make sense.Cheers

HI there, we are upgrading

HI there, we are upgrading the PWS live obs page in the near future as we continue to migrate over to IBM's new Weather Company. This is an expense for us so is taking time. In the meantime we're displaying the WU network which is very handy but has about 10% of weather stations that aren't too reliable (so always pays to look at surrounding stations to get a good idea). We're also looking forward to the New Zealand Government making the weather stations we all collectively fund at NIWA and MetService open and available at some point time - NZ is the only country in the western world to delay this data for people to use simply for the commercial profits of Government Agencies.

Cheers

Saturday

Hey guys any chance of playing a cricket game in Auckland tomorrow?

At this stage probably not

At this stage probably not however there is certainly a chance things could dry out for a time in some areas (especially eastern areas). A fine line between heavy sub-tropical rain and just drizzle and dry spells. A very hard forecast to perfectly nail due to this fine line. That's probably not a helpful reply!
