If you have any questions about functionality of our website(s) or app, trying to locate maps or data, or have a simple comment/feedback - please post a comment below!

As of 2024 we will no longer be publishing questions related to weather forecasts if they are answered via our hyper-local hourly & 10 day forecasts, weather maps and regular daily and monthly weather & climate videos.

We’re a small NZ business with limited resources to respond to general weather questions. Our social media pages may be helpful to you, especially if you want to often talk (or groan!) about your local weather. You can find more resources from us here if that’s your thing.

Have questions of a commercial nature? Contact us directly here.

Thanks for your support!

Don’t forget to check out our RuralWeather.co.nz website (great for event planning or attending + camping!) and also, our brand new Weather Alerting App!

Phil on 27/12/2025 7:15pm

Hi Phil/WW, Firstly I think you guys do an amazing job! While not always accurate, it is still the best of the NZ weather reporting sites!
Something that annoys the hell out of me though is the talk of ‘Meteorological Seasons’!! There can be only one! Here’s my take on it:
If you were tasked with a new way of keeping time, do you think you’d come up with the most illogical concept that is currently humanity’s time keeping system!
The only thing that is real is the concept of a ‘day’ (one full revolution of the earth) and a ‘year’ (one full revolution of the earth around the sun). The concept however of seconds, minutes, hours, weeks and months make no sense at all and just dreamt up by some moron two thousand years ago and come from a system of measure most of which is based on the figure twelve! WHY…..who knows!!
If you are going to have ‘seasons’ at all, because lets face it – they are just a measure of one years average weather extreme’s, then they MUST coincide with something real. Something that is real are the Solstices and Equinox and are the true (and ONLY) start of each season!

Hi there Phil, thanks for the comment. We put this story up a few years ago (about spring, but relates to what you talk about)

Kind regards

Absolutely ridiculous forecast for “Auckland” from Met service for 26 Dec.
Issued at 8:10 am Fri 26 December, the forecast is valid to midnight – more than 15 hours with no updates in between. Not the first time they have issued such a “blanket” forecast that just doesn’t pan out. Very little evidence of predicted “moderate risk of thunderstorms with heavy rain associated”. Slackers if you ask me. Perhaps the Moderate: 30-60% should be reviewed? Etc.

Give it a rest, Helen. Did the Xmas grinch steal your holiday spirit?

Grant on 25/12/2025 11:24pm

As a keen observer of weather in the North Island I and some of my friends and colleagues find weather forecasts over the past 3 to 4 months have been woeful !

I’m in my early 70s and have had an ongoing interest in weather in the North Island from Taupo north, the forecasting of late (last 6 months) have been woeful specifically in the greater Auckland Region

With all the weather specialists & all the techo goodies you have you’d like to think you could get some reliability and semblance of accuracy in forecasting !

When Wiroa Island had a weather station at Auckland Airport forecasts for Auckland were inherently reliable, these days it’s look out the window and guess, seems to be the basis of weather FORCASTING in the 21st Century!

Rgds, Grant Maconaghie

WW Forecast Team on 26/12/2025 12:48am

Hi there, New Zealand has no open weather data – that’s why forecasts aren’t as accurate as we all wish they were. That simply means that no historical or current weather data is openly available for use, unlike Australia, USA, Canada, UK, Japan etc. I suggest you write to you local MP. Our forecasts in other nations are more accurate because we capture real time data including radar.
Have a nice day, thank you for using our free service when you tax fund both MetService and Niwa weather.
Regards

Mary Jarvie on 25/12/2025 8:15am

Why are results from Westport Cananda showing up on this page ?! ie IWESTP58

WW Forecast Team on 25/12/2025 9:44am

Hi Mary, where are you seeing it say Canada? IWESTP58 does appear to be incorrect, but it’s showing 21 degrees, not -3 (which it is there). We’ll take a look and remove that station in the next day or so.
