Hey , we are off to Queenstown on Sunday 10th to the 16th ……what are the chances of snow in the low areas of Queenstown ??? Some very excited kids first time !
Thanks

WW Forecast Team on 7/07/2022 3:26am

Hi Anna, at this stage it’s too far out to lock in snow (as the precise wind flow will matter and that’s harder to be exact about this far out). However snow will likely remain on the hills and ranges following this weekend, with daytime maximums of only +4C to +7C in the week ahead. Also, maybe another dusting of snow around Qtown next Thurs/Fri. Should look great around Queenstown next weekend when you’re there – and hopefully not a long drive to find some snow to play in 🙂 Safe travels!

Hi Phil,

Is there a new video update today?

WW Forecast Team on 6/07/2022 2:49am

Apologies we have a team member away sick today and so couldn’t put the video together. Back tomorrow/Thursday with the weekend outlook 🙂

Kind regards

Tom on 4/07/2022 9:16pm

Hi Phil, Just wondering if is it the coldest time of year now. Here in Auckland we would have normally had some frosts by now but we haven’t and none are in the forecast. I’m trying to grow some food considering the horrendous prices nowadays and am wondering if some plants can be planted out. Normally I wait until August but with no frost in the forecast I’m wondering if i try it. Having not had any frosts (we only got one or two last year) I am wondering what the soil temp is approx. Thanks, Tom

WW Forecast Team on 4/07/2022 9:26pm

Hi Tom, yes for Auckland now is usually the coldest – but the snow event in Auckland over a decade ago was in the middle of August. For Auckland to get a frost we just need a nice clear sky S to SE polar flow which can happen from May to September. July is traditionally the coldest time in Auckland, and much of August too – although in August you tend to notice the extra sunlight and by mid to late August the general feeling can be a little brighter and warmer with westerlies returning again as we head towards spring here in the north.
Cheers
Phil D

in response to auckland frosts. by the end of june last year, there had been 6 in a row in the northwest part of the region, that was more than the whole of winter the year before.

Michael on 3/07/2022 6:25am

Hello. I was wondering if there was any place I could find data based on cloud cover from past days. I am doing a project and would love to have this information. Thank you.

WW Forecast Team on 3/07/2022 9:47pm

Hi Michael, sadly NZ in the only country in the modern western world to not share tax funded data openly. (In other words, Government Agency NIWA won’t allow WW to display tax funded weather observations as they claim it’s their IP..even they NIWA is 100% owned by the Govt/taxpayers). This means you’ll need to contact NIWA directly to help with your project. Wishing you all the best, kind regards,
Phil D.
