Hi Phil..I have been observing a developing possible marine heatwave on the Moana Project website. It seems the Bay of Plenty area is already experiencing a Marine heatwave. Amazingly i have not seen any media news regarding this important development…The Tasman Sea marine heatwave of 2017 – 2018 gave NZ it’s hottest summer on record and created some havoc to the surrounding environments. Interesting to note 2017-2018 we were under a La Nina influence…Other areas showing heatwave potential Cape Reinga, Hauraki Gulf and Stewart Island areas …
Thoughts on the odds 2021-2022 Summer could be another very hot one.

Thanks for your message. Yes it very much feels like a marine heatwave developing which ties in with the developing La Nina to some degree. Definitely should add more warmth – as we’re already experiencing this month, which will definitely be breaking temperature records for land with this consistent warmth. The next 14 days ahead look drier for NZ – but hotter. Looks like an early summer this year for most of NZ, especially the north. Our next ClimateWatch outlook (the last one for the year) will be issued on Tuesday Nov 30 and we’ll be taking a close look at the sea surface temperatures and anomalies in our part of the world.
