Hi Anna, at this stage itβs too far out to lock in snow (as the precise wind flow will matter and thatβs harder to be exact about this far out). However snow will likely remain on the hills and ranges following this weekend, with daytime maximums of only +4C to +7C in the week ahead. Also, maybe another dusting of snow around Qtown next Thurs/Fri. Should look great around Queenstown next weekend when youβre there β and hopefully not a long drive to find some snow to play in π Safe travels!

Hi Phil, Just wondering if is it the coldest time of year now. Here in Auckland we would have normally had some frosts by now but we havenβt and none are in the forecast. Iβm trying to grow some food considering the horrendous prices nowadays and am wondering if some plants can be planted out. Normally I wait until August but with no frost in the forecast Iβm wondering if i try it. Having not had any frosts (we only got one or two last year) I am wondering what the soil temp is approx. Thanks, Tom

Hi Tom, yes for Auckland now is usually the coldest β but the snow event in Auckland over a decade ago was in the middle of August. For Auckland to get a frost we just need a nice clear sky S to SE polar flow which can happen from May to September. July is traditionally the coldest time in Auckland, and much of August too β although in August you tend to notice the extra sunlight and by mid to late August the general feeling can be a little brighter and warmer with westerlies returning again as we head towards spring here in the north.
Cheers
Phil D

in response to auckland frosts. by the end of june last year, there had been 6 in a row in the northwest part of the region, that was more than the whole of winter the year before.

Hello. I was wondering if there was any place I could find data based on cloud cover from past days. I am doing a project and would love to have this information. Thank you.

Hi Michael, sadly NZ in the only country in the modern western world to not share tax funded data openly. (In other words, Government Agency NIWA wonβt allow WW to display tax funded weather observations as they claim itβs their IP..even they NIWA is 100% owned by the Govt/taxpayers). This means youβll need to contact NIWA directly to help with your project. Wishing you all the best, kind regards,
Phil D.
