Hi Blake, the cumulative map is a global product made by GFS (America) and updated daily. It’s generally a good guide but isn’t as localised as the data we have on our websites/app which update houly and factors in much more detail, including understanding the local topography better and using AI to learn from previous mistakes. Both are useful together, but in messy set-ups (like we have later this week) the varying wind directions in each update can alter rainfall totals due to our mountains and ranges. So the big picture map is good to see if heavy rain is nearby (and may move your way if things change) and the local updates are great for drilling down deeper and seeing the current best thinking for where you are.

Morning Josh, thanks very much! And yeah been some decent instability around the North Island recently – been great for us as we’re testing new real-time lightning alerts to bring in to NZ… we needed those storms to help us confirm accuracy of what we’re building 🙂 Now we just need another set of thunderstorms in July to confirm!
