As of 2024 we will no longer be publishing questions related to weather forecasts if they are answered via our hyper-local hourly & 10 day forecasts, weather maps and regular daily and monthly weather & climate videos.

We’re a small NZ business with limited resources to respond to general weather questions. Our social media pages may be helpful to you, especially if you want to often talk (or groan!) about your local weather. You can find more resources from us here if that’s your thing.

Why are we still seeing spring weather? Is this spring going to end by the end of year or anytime soon

Phil on 5/12/2024 5:42am

Hey mate, I know you’ve had this question in the past few weeks because I was about to ask the same one. When is this going to ease in Southland. It’s honestly dreadful, the wind is absolutely insane. I’ve lived here 45 years and never seen anything even close to it. It’s December for crying out loud and we can’t drive on our bloody paddocks yet without bogging. I know for a fact mental health is down around these ways and there’s nothing in the news about it.

WW Forecast Team on 5/12/2024 7:04pm

Hi there thanks for the message and we appreciate the stress you’re under in Southland, as we’ve been talking about your pattern since winter. In August we said a spring pattern dominated by storms over the Southern Ocean would likely far outweigh anything La Nina related in the tropics… in other words, extending your not-so-flash weather pattern into summer. With that in mind we don’t expect any major changes this month – but a couple of silver linings are that generally warmer weather is in the mix now, and rainfall totals are dropping down from where they were over previous months (although western and coastal areas may not notice much change).

More details in our latest ClimateWatch update for December: https://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/content/climatewatch-december-outlook-looks-like-a-warmer-extension-of-spring-12-maps-video

Cheers and all the very best for the weeks/months ahead

Hi Phil,

I was wondering if you could elaborate a little more around cold fronts. What conditions/set up is needed for them to properly make it to the Waikato (in the sense of delivering meaninful rain), and what causes them to fizzle?

I know from my own rainfall records that last summer here where I farm (Matamata/Tirau), it started to dry out a bit in December but we had some rain between Christmas and the new year (I think from a low, if my memory serves me right), and then regularly we received 20-30mm of rain from cold fronts in January, which kept things growing well. Once February rolled around however, that dried up. I’ve noticed that also this year, the cold fronts have just decided to give up and only deliver a few mm’s or none at all. What causes this?

Cheers,
Edward

hey phil and ww team. Josh here. december already. I love your auckland forecast today haha. yes its been very cloudy most of weekend and last week with few sunny days. hopefully this summery week is sunny.

Pete Davies on 1/12/2024 5:39am

Hi Phil
NIWA said on Friday there was a significant weather rain event for second or third week of December, for the west of both islands
Care to comment? Thanks pete ( hopefully it’s true😂)

WW Forecast Team on 1/12/2024 6:02am

Hi Pete, Lots of westerly driven showers and southern rain bands are coming – so it ‘piles up’ on the South Island’s West Coast. Long range data still shows wetter than normal for Westland southwards – and normal northwards, with those totals tapering off as you head towards Cook Strait and Tarakaki. Below normal rainfall for the western North Island. We’ll have more details in our December ClimateWatch video out later on Monday afternoon. It’s still spring-like in our view and that means a messy forecast mixed in with some big high pressure zones nearby.
