A ridge of high pressure hangs over New Zealand today extending out from a large anticyclone in the Pacific Ocean. High surface moisture and converging winds lead to unstable conditions for the North Island this afternoon.

NZ next 2 days: Downpour and Thunderstorm threats (+6 Maps)

The sub-tropics return to the North Island over the next day or two with a combination of morning and overnight drizzle, daytime patchy rain and heavy afternoon downpours inland due to daytime heating.

Overnight lows may also remain above 20 degrees for many northerners, even coastal parts of the South Island will struggle to drop below the late teens tonight.

A subtropical northerly airflow continues to flow onto New Zealand today, moving around a large high centred far to the east of the country in the Pacific Ocean.

Weak high pressure lies over the South Island today while a front draped over the North Island weakens today.

Sub-tropics linking up with New Zealand - but main energy to our north (+Maps)

A vein of subtropical rain extends from New Caledonia down to New Zealand's North Island however the bulk of the energy lies out at sea north of Northland.

RainWatch - Thursday 18th January 2018

UPDATED 9:51am --- A band of sub-tropical rain is slowly moving over the North Island but it is proving to be patchy with areas of drizzle, moderate rain and isolated heavy downpours.

Rain for the upper North Island today will have heavy falls at times but it's looking more likely to be later today - and a big chunk of it may be out at sea around Northland.
