Tuesday Newsfeed: A taste of winter in mid-summer!

A cold change will drop temperatures by over 12 degrees in the South Island today with single digit highs possible in some areas inland, and a dusting of snow on the ranges later today and overnight.

The cold change will bring winter weather conditions above 300 or 400m for a time along the Southern Alps with subzero temperatures also possible – a bit of a shock to the system if you’re camping and tramping in the south of New Zealand next 48 hours.

The cold change will drop temperatures by around 8 degrees below normal for the lower half of the South Island on Tuesday.

It will also act as an “air-conditioner” for the rest of NZ, wiping away the high heat and humidity that has been stuck over the North Island for a week or longer – but it may take until tonight or overnight to do so, meaning that today Tuesday will still be pushing 30 degrees in the eastern North Island and still mid to late 20s for many others as that front moves in from the west with rain and showers.

See hourly temperatures in our new App for more details on when the cooler air arrives… and we also have humidity graphs too, so you can see when that eases too. If you’re on the PRO version you can set alerts for temperatures changes – you chose the criteria.
