Hi there, Wunderground was

Hi there, Wunderground was bought out by IBM and The Weather Company last year and they share a lot of similar data but Wunderground is an old system that isn't making use of the IBM Watson Super Computer which is the smartest weather super computer on earth. Wunderground is also having increasing technical problems due to the focus being on the future TWC brand.  So our new forecasts are like Wunderground but with much higher resolution and much better understanding of your local geography which impacts the weather. We have work to do to improve the icons (too often it shows a rain cloud when really it's a sunny day with the chance of a shower - we will fix that in time). Otherwise the data is far superior, especially wind directions, % of rain and likely temperature ranges. We've been using it internally for a very long time to produce all of our news content and it rarely lets us down. It's not perfect though - no data is - but it's definitely an upgrade and proven (by IBM) to be more accurate than the two Government forecasters in New Zealand.

Kind regards

WW

App and website different

You app says 31.2 but your website says 27 for Raglan. Why the difference?

Hi there, the app is most

Hi there, the app is most likely finding the nearest location to you whereas the website may be finding the main one in Raglan. It's all the same feed so there shuoldn't be any difference to the data.

Kind regards

WOW you made the switch

Heeeeeyyy WW Team You guys made the switch to The Weather Company. AWESOME!!!! It all looks great and I love the fact that The Weather Company predictions don't look so evil for Dunedin. Here's to the New You. WW is still the most accurate weather forecasters in NZ. Take care and congrats Dee

Hi Dee, thanks so much for

Hi Dee, thanks so much for the support, glad you like the changes!! We have a few teething problems today and tomorrow as we finish the shift - so there may be some gaps in the data at times, but hopefully all should be smooth sailing by the weekend. It's great to have The Weather Company as an official business partner and using the world's most powerful weather super computer we hope there will be a gradual increase in forecast accuracy beyond what we've achieved in years prior.

Kind regards and thanks again for the supportive message :)

Auckland current conditions

Is it possible to get a more accurate weather station for current conditions in Auckland. The current Fanshawe Street one is badly over-reading - showing 30 degrees at 9.30am.

Weather in the South

Hi Team..Amazing weather in Dunedin yesterday..right through till sunset (with photos on the beach at Tomahawk, at 9.30 - amazing)..despite the forecast..& swimming at St Kilda at 6..many swimming.!) A note about the impending upgrade..bring it on.- the forecast for Dunedin from Wunderground this last year has been chllenging, because it is always based in Patetonga - do you know where that is..? It is in the middle of what we regard as party of Central Otago, near Ranfurly - really part of the Silverpeaks area. Not very accurate, to be honest. Looking forward to the upgrade, therefore.! ..And I noticed the article from the ODT, you have linked. Odd about how important NIWA thinks it is..and always has - (remember the staff member who 'was let go' because he kept articulating concerns of the doom facing us from 'climate change'.) Feel for you guys with the bureaucracy that has been rampant in Wellington.. hopefully a change is in the wind. Here's to a very good year ahead, and a very blessed rest of summer for the team there. Cheers, from here..daryl.

Hi Daryl, thanks for your

Hi Daryl, thanks for your comments. Yes the heat in Dunedin last night was quite something, saw temperatures in the late 20s as of 9:30pm which is pretty remarkable! Yes our new data means Dunedin will have even more accurate forecasts. While we fixed that bug they had with the incorrect inland location it didn't apply to every Dunedin forecast - the new data we have is very much perfectly focused on Dunedin City.

Yes it's painful that we all collectively tax fund and own Niwa and MetService yet neither has open data (in other words, data we all fund being accessible to everyone that funded it). Thankfully MBIE just completed an official independent review that 100% backed up our complaints over the past several years about NZ's awful third world weather set up. Now we just need the new Government to actually act on it. More red tape ahead!
Cheers and thanks for your support, it means a lot to us :)
Cheers

The weather - funnily enough!

Welcome back Duncan, and exciting to see new things on the horizon! Any idea when this humidity will dissipate please - in Auckland!

Phil must be busy..... He's always been around doing stories etc, the videos have just re-started again that's all :)

Have a read of this post I did a few days ago just below:

"The best bet is to do this, go here: http://nz.bsch.com.au/stormcast.html?ops=gfs::::mslp:null:0

Using your mouse, left click on "COMPLETE CHARTS LIST" in the top left hand corner of the new zealand map area. In the box that comes out of there then find "Dew Point" (in the middle box towards the bottom). Hover over the "2m" option and left click with your mouse.

Once you are in those maps you'll see lots of different colour shadings representing different dewpoint temperatures. Using the dates and times on the left hand side, click the date / time you want to check out. Anything on the map below a 15 degree dewpoint is starting to look more comfortable, a dewpoint of 10 degrees or less is not going to feel muggy at all really. So for Auckland for example it's going to feel muggy for a fair while yet.....

So there you go, now you can find out for yourself! :)"

No more Wunderground

Thank goodness you are moving away from Wunderground. They have been the only downside of your site and it can only get better without their involvement. Looking forward to better things.

Hi there, thanks for the

Hi there, thanks for the supportive message :) It will take time but yes we will be adding new features to the website and our app this year. (or potentially a new, second, app). In the first instance our website and app will have forecast upgrades which are hugely significant as they will be 24/7 updating to improve in places where they got it wrong, it's very exciting new software thanks to IBM.

28th January 2018

Hi there, How is the weather looking for Sunday 28th January 2018? We have an upcoming weather that day and we are nervous about the weather! Thank you. Kind regards, Duncan

HI there Duncan, assuming

HI there Duncan, assuming you're talking about northern NZ or Auckland? If so, easterlies and mostly dry appear to be in the forecast for this weekend. We'll be fine tuning it even more over Tuesday and Wednesday (as with half the country on holiday there will be a lot of demand for a long weekend forecaster for northern NZ and Nelson).

Cheers
WW

Hi there, Sorry, yes your

Hauraki Gulf Weather

Hi There, Are you able to give me a bit more an insight in to sun/rain/wind predictions in the Hauraki gulf (between Waiheke and across the firth of Thames) from Saturday to mid next week please? Cheers Anthony

Hi Anthony, you're best to

Hi Anthony, you're best to use our Maps page here as you can zoom in to the area and see rain, wind, swells, temperatures in 3 hour segments across the days for the Gulf and Firth of Thames area.

Looks mostly dry this weekend with NE winds, next week sees a mix of showers/downpours and NE winds easing.

Snells Beach

Hi, What do you think the weather is like this weekend in Snells Beach / Kawau? Also the wind, is it going to calm down? We'll be in a tent! Thanks

Hi there, it's looking mostly

Hi there, it's looking mostly dry this weekend but there are rain clouds in Northland tracking by (so a fine line between dry in Auckland and potentially wet north of Snells Beach). Wind-wise we do see the same nor'east wind continuing which won't be overly strong for most, but in a tent it may be a little breezy at times (but not stormy and not as strong as it's been this week).
Hope that helps! Have a great time :)

Weekend weather

Hi guys, looking at Mangawhai over this weekend, what should we expect rain wise?

It's a tough forecast with

It's a tough forecast with high humidity and heavy rain just offshore, yet a chance of sunny and cloudy spells on land. A forecast to keep an eye on as it might change, but for not the weekend looks (hopefully) mostly dry. But there is a disclaimer that the rainband out at sea (closer to Northland) could drift back over land without much notice. Keep an eye on the hourly forecast we have for Managawhai, in particular the hourly % of rain.

Please say Sun ;)

Hey Guys, Whats the weather forecast likely to be like next week in Waihi area? Hoping this rain will clear out for a bit so we can enjoy the beach??? Cheers :)

Keep an eye on our Tauranga

Keep an eye on our Tauranga forecasts, they will be very similar if not the same as what Waihi can expect.

http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/weather-forecasts/tauranga

Generally speaking there could be areas of rain in the first half of the week then it msy dry out with more sun on Thursday and Friday. But it's all a we while away and things could change. Keep an eye on the forecasts above :)

yet again January is garbage..

Unreal how bad weather Auckland is now in January - out of the first 3 weeks nearly 2 of them will be cloud and wind + showers...apparently right in the middle of "summer" Warm sure - but windy as hell and cloudy...it seems summer is starting later and later - is there any data on this or just 2 fickle summers in a row?

youre right

Get out of Auckland,I have done that a couple of times in January, the lower North Island has had wonderful weather, none of the high winds or the endless cloudy humid nights either but clear sunny days.

What a load of bollocks.

What a load of bollocks. Apart from the storm at the beginning of the year, we have predominantly had sunny hot weather. Looks like a few cloudy windy days now, but nothing as bad as you make out. You mention summer starting later ....have you already forgotten how sunny and hot December was? What did you call that if not Summer? Jeez!

Hi there, welcome to living

Hi there, welcome to living on two islands in the South Pacific and half in the roaring 40s! Our weather is always dictated by just the local weather patterns and all it takes is for a high pressure system to move away and we're very vulnerable to weather like this. Sadly weather data in NZ is a bit of a joke as Government agencies collect it differently (MetService and NIWA) and both make news headlines for various temperatures at various sites. It's why the NZ Government is now formally looking into data and why these public agencies are more focused on making big headlines rather than just providing clean open data that we can all check in on.

Cheers

Castlepoint

We are at Castlepoint for the next week and 3 days from today 15th Jan. Our family is considering joining us. I check your site constantly. The weather seems to change so dramatically every time I look. Will we ever actually see a fine day?? Also trying to plan when to break down the tent.

Hi there, what a lovely spot

Hi there, what a lovely spot by the way! Thanks for the question and yes the forecast is certainly a bit messy! Tuesday is a good one - hot and mainly dry. Wednesday also looks fairly OK. But Thursday and Friday may have both wind and rain before improving fast to a hot, sunny, Saturday (unsure if that helps you!).

Details here for Castlepoint, specifically - as one our 1500 forecast locations.

http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/weather-forecasts/Castlepoint - you have hourly forecasts here which can be helpful when you're dealing with timing for rain (more accurate on the day itself too quite often).

Happy New Year and hope you have a fantastic few days (Bring Monopoly!!)

Weather forecast prediction

One would wonder with the new technology you could get it right for once. Days of old forecasters were more accurate. And lets NOT say it is because of climate change

Show some gratitude

Why don’t you start your own channel and get t right instead of being a pompous arrogant Pr**k. Easy to be a keyboard warrior but phil and Aaron get it right more than you can count up to. Take your negativity elsewhere.

Hi there, thanks for your

Hi there, thanks for your complaint "anonymous". Here's hoping you send your compaint also to NIWA and MetService - as we are 100% free to you, but your taxes pay for them. Assuming because you use us, you're even less impressed with the ones you actually pay for.

Kind regards,
WW - A 100% free service.

Rangitoto walk

We're walking from Rangitoto to the causeway/Motutapu on either Tuesday or Thursday – given that rain is forecast for Wednesday. I understand that Tuesday is windy and Thursday less so, but with more chance of a shower. Which day is your best pick? Michael Smith

Hi there May want to check

Hi there

May want to check out Wednesday again, that heavy rain is now not due till Thursday. Either Tuesday or Wednesday has similar weather, cloudy areas with a light shower or two possible, winds breezy from the northeast, fresh at times. Conditions will be humid and warm with high's in the mid twenties.

You can track the rain yourself here if you like: http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/forecast-maps/rain

Hope that helps!

Auckland summer overnight lows

Hi there, I feel like over the last 2 months Auckland's overnight temps have been warmer than average. I understand that the monopolised nature of weather data in New Zealand makes this difficult, but I feel like every summer Auckland overnight temperatures hover around 16 to 20cm whereas the 'official' data from NIWA etc shoes this peaking at 15.8c in February. So, my question is, do you think this is due to incorrect long run averages (under-reading by several degrees, potential cooler weather station placement etc), or a warmer than average summer? Auckland is certainly living up to it's subtropical billing this summer. Cheers!

Hi there, a great question

Hi there, a great question and not sure if we can clearly answer it. Averages in New Zealand are hard to work out as both NIWA and MetService only have a handful of stations that are public. NIWA has sometimes said Auckland has broken temperature records while MetService didn't agree (as they use different data and sites). This is why we want one public data source for all to use and query. But you're quite right about Auckland being sub-tropical lately. This year we have definitely had an uptick in northerly and north easterly airflows (much more so than last summer). This brings in much higher overnight temperatures and makes the daytime ones feel much warmer too. February is usually when we have our peak heat though, but being two islands in a part of the world with very changeable weather you just never know how the pattern in February may go. No signs of immediate cooling down though - the mugginess is here to stay for a while yet.

Kind regards
Philip Duncan
