Snow should clear Friday night and they may well have cleared the runways before your flight is due in Queenstown. It will be very very cold on Saturday morning though so potential ice build up could cause issues. Best to check with your airline on the day.

Camping this weekend

I have a large camp with planned (20 people) on the West Coast this weekend and need to make a call whether to cancel it in the next day or so. At this stage the forecast is OK, although a little cold! I suspect the ground at our location will be quite boggy too. From what I've been reading the weather system is moving slower than expected, does this mean the there is a chance that the bad weather will spill over into Saturday?

There are two factors to

There are two factors to consider.

One is what is the actual chance of rain or showers happening on a given day for the whole city in general.

The second factor is how much of a percentage will the forecast precipitation cover the city in question. Rain we will often quote a higher percentage factor as rain systems generally cover a much broader area. Showers are often here and there sort've thing's so are often quoted at around 60% for example.

Interpretation of rain percentage

I've often wondered about the rain percentage. Just to be clear, if WW says that Auckland has a rain chance of 60%, should I read that as:
"60% of the Auckland conurbation is expected to receive rain" or
"if I stand still in a 'normal weather spot' in Auckland, I'll be rained on for 60% of the time" or
"if I stand still in a 'normal weather spot' in Auckland, I have a 60% chance of getting wet/drowned" or
"60% means 'don't blame me'" (compared with "30% means 'don't be surprized'; 10% means 'worth a risk') or
"there is a 60% chance that the wet system will be in the vicinity around that time" or
something else.
I'm keen to have a sentence in my head when I read the percentage.

Hi Wayne - good question! It can be argued two ways - that 60% of the city will see showers, or that 60% is slightly higher than moderate chance of a shower at your place. We tend to actually combine both of those when we make the percentage. It's there as a guide only to add another dimension to the precipitation prediction.

If we had 40% chance of showers, then chances are the day will be mostly dry - or that they will be isolated.
If we had a 40% chance of rain (rather than showers) then that would indicate the front is very weak.

We have plans to make the site a little more self explanatory - which we hope to do that in the coming months.
